Who wouldn’t love to be that winner you see on TV holding a great big sweepstakes check? That’s what con artists are counting on when they claim to be Publishers Clearing House. This trick is an oldie but goodie for scammers.

The scam starts with a call or letter saying you’ve won the Publishers Clearing House sweepstakes. But to collect your prize, they say, you need to send money to pay for fees and taxes. Typically you’ll be asked to send money by Western Union or MoneyGram, or by getting a reloadable card or gift card. Scammers ask you to pay these ways because it’s nearly impossible to trace the money — and you’ll almost never get it back.

But that’s not the only way scammers get your money with this scam. Some will send you a realistic-looking fake check in the mail. You’re told that, to claim your prize, you need to deposit the check and send some of the money back for made-up expenses. But when the check you deposit bounces — even after it seemed to clear — you may be on the hook for the money you sent.

If you think you’ve won a prize, here are a few things to know:

  • Never send money to collect a prize, sweepstakes check, or lottery winnings. If you have to pay, it’s a scam.
  • Never deposit a check and send back money, even if the funds appear in your account. That’s a sure sign of a scam.
  • If anyone calls asking you to pay for a prize, hang up and report it to the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.

Want to know more? Read our article on Prize Scams. And, if you wired money to a prize scammer via Western Union between January 1, 2004 and January 19, 2017, you might be eligible for a refund.

Still think it’s real? The real Publishers Clearing House says it will never ask you to pay a fee to collect a prize. Check out Publishers Clearing House’s fraud protection page.

I had to block Publishers Clearing House, cause just like you, 1 entry & they kept pushing crap on me for years & finally agreed to try free mags & ten I cancelled after free months up, but they continued sending more & billing me. I called & cancelled again, stating I didn't even like those, so they started sending even more different ones,& billing for at least a year, before I finally was able to talk them into stopping. But then, it seemed like a flood of new offers kept calling messaging etc.

I never played the state lottery, but I was thinking of it since the money you spend goes to such good projects. I'd just think of it as a few extra dollars in taxes a week. But suppose I won? How would I know if it was for real? I'm not sure where to begin or what to watch out for.

P.J., You will know without a doubt. If you win, they will show up with a check for you not asking you for a check. There will no doubt be cameras, a host of employees with microphones & likely even your local news caster to capture your every emotion so they can publicize this memorable event, all without asking anything of you other than for your consent to airing your very fortunate event to the world.

Not to be too negative, but as with e-mails, telephone Caller ID information can be spoofed the same way and almost always is with scams. Thus, it's a waste of time to worry about the name and phone numbers the calls come from, because none of it is real; it's all spoofed. Should you decide to look up the number, it'll always be some innocent party who knows nothing of what you're calling them about; they are literally innocent bystanders. Actually, I don't know why the FTC doesn't make this point in these cases but I've never seen it mentioned by them. However if you go to their web pages online, there is a page that explains all of what I just described. Their website is an excellent source of information on this and a lot more.

Received a so called letter from PCH with a check!! We got on computer and found a phone # for PCH and called them. They had us send them copies of the letter and check, which we did. Told us at that time that they didn't know about this scam. This is a good site for learning about all of the scams going on. Thank you!

Pch says ordering something doesn't inprove your chance of winning! But now because I did order a magazine that I normally get there saying take a look at the stuff you have won 30% off your order and if you won't order they keep showing more and won't let you enter saying you have 1 more step before you go to the final level I think that's false advertising
Phil A.
April 25, 2018
I think the whole PCH thing is a scam in and of itself. Other than the actors they use in their ads, have you ever read about, or seen on TV, anyone who actually won anything? It's a scam to sell magazines.

Yeah, I know about that PCH. They do string you along, have you doing things (playing games) online... Yes, the date keeps getting pushed upward... why would they want to take up peoples time like that and get their hopes up for nothing. It's gotten to the point in order to protect yourself and your interest, you really can't believe anyone. If I don't know you, to me, you're a scam.

My mom got a letter claiming to be from PCH asking for money to be sent to win a prize. We called PCH and they were very helpful in educating us about this scam and providing us information to contact law enforcement. They made it clear they never ask for money to win and actually called my Mom back to make sure she was okay and had not lost any money and understood it was a scam

A "Publishers Clearinghouse" man just called here 4/25/18 at 10:30am to from an "unknown name" source with poor telephone clarity (possibly a cell)and said we were 1st prize winners of $2.5M and a 2018 Mercedes valued at $200K.He asked us for our email address so he could send our info. I told them to send the info to us by certified mail which we were happy to accept. He must have our mailing address. He hung up. Do not give unknown people any more info if they call.

I was called yesterday morning @ 2:30 a.m. told I had won a brand new car & 17,000.000.00 . I was very skeptical, so they had me call Wells Fargo to verify. Now the bank supposedly wanted 750.00 to release the money. I have all numbers they would give me. I never would give them mine. They are online posing as PCH prizepatrollers.

I understand. I just found out today that my parents fell for this trap. They had received tons of PCH in the mail for years and never won a single thing. Well, now they get a call today from someone allegedly with PCH saying that they have their prize in holding and have had it for 6 months. They talked to them for hours convincing them to go to their bank and get a certified check over $2,000 and send it to somewhere in Nevada, before their prize could be released. I'm sick to my stomach that these dirtbags get away with this. These older folks that still have some with need to realize that in today's world, things do not work like they did years ago. Scams abound!!

Yes, just recently they said they were giving money away to the elderly ,retired and widows to winners. Well I fell for it. They had me sen 1,ooo.oo to a David in Zion bank Utah. Then Saturday they told me to get 20 100.00 I tuned cards. Not saying who is getting all of this. Then they say ups went to deliver money to me and IRS stopped them because they wanted 4,000.00 in taxes. I did get wise then.Though the same person keeps texting me to pay and the money will be delivered to my door. Then she kept saying dont mention any of this to anyone. I told her this was a scam and she insisted not.well yesterday I blocked her from phone, after her telling me the FBI is coming to arrest me. Meanwhile I am out of 3,000.00. I am 80 year old widow and will not fall again for these scams

I just got a call from 1-876-584-0241 Jamaica NY. Said he was PCH and that I won 6.5 Million plus a new Mercedes sports car. He had me write down bogus stuff like batch code & verification #s, etc. even the name of the verifying attorney (Mary Smith). Then started to ask me questions, like my marital status, working or retired, etc....I stopped it before it got to any important info. When he asked how to spell my name, I said "you called me, you don't know my name?" (It's an common easy to spell name). I said something about checking with PCH headquarters because I wasn't comfortable and he hung up LOL.

Years ago I tried one of their "unusual products" - some "very special" hands-free magnifier glass. The quality was so bad it was impossible to use. It was a real pain in the neck to return it. Then they sent me a lengthy letter that seemed to state I've ALREADY WON. I am a foreigner, my English is not perfect. So, I asked my American friend to decipher it for me. It took HIM about half an hour to find out: - the phrase was "WINNER will receive..." but they never said "YOU ARE the winner" - I was about to receive something called "COMPENDIUM" (I was unable to find that word in a dictionary). They kept bombarding me with their lottery offers even after I moved o another location - they found me even there! And it took me a lot of lost nerve cells to finally get them off my back. Here is my conclusion: Publisher's Clearing House is evil. No more business with them.

I got a call today which turned out to be this scam. I played along giving false info and they finally got to the point of telling me I needed to go to Walmart to register my prize. From that point I just kept asking "What does PCH have to do with Walmart?" anytime the guy paused for breath in reciting his script. He finally got so fed up that he hung up. Best of all I managed to waste about 40 minutes of his time while eating my lunch and trying not to laugh out loud.

PCH makes it clear that they never alert any winners any advance either by calling or emailing you nor do they ever make you have to pay them anything in order to receive it. Anyone who does either of these is obviously a scammer. Also, they will never be asking you for any personal information other than for your mailing address and birthdate, but not anything else especially if it involves a social security number, plus they should know from your account where you live anyway. Should you win one of the smaller prizes, they will usually just send an email alert of either how to pick it up or they will just mail it to you, but they will never tell you to send them anything. Meanwhile, winning a grand prize means that they will show up in person, and they do know where you live by your account. Please keep in mind that they don't friend anyone via social media, so if someone claiming it's them doing this, it's obviously fake. More importantly, you can't win a contest that you never entered for in the first place. As for the emails you may receive as a result of playing with them, you can always unsubscribe from them like I did for some of them so that the you won't be getting them later on.

I just received a call from someone named Dave Sawyer in Kingston Jamaica! Number was 876-365-8837 and said I won $1.5 million plus a brand new 2017 Buick. I was given a 6-digit number and told to call Andy Goldberg at the PCH NY Headquarters at 716-222-3161. I immediately looked up how PCH notifies their winners and it's exclusively through the live prize patrol, not via phone call (smaller prizes may be notified via mail or email). I didn't call the next number and received another phone call from the first number. I immediately told them I knew it was a scam and was contacting PCH directly. They hung up. SCAMMERS!

my wife got one of these calls today, she told me about it when i got home from work. she was told she won 485,00. They however needed 300.00 for an IRS registry number. After she sent the money they called back about about also winning a car and they needed additional 400.00. She sent it thru moneygram. i looked it up and she called money gram. after answering a lot of questions, she is getting a refund of that money. She also consented to allow her information about this incident to be given to several law enforcement agencies. My wife is smart and this sounded sooo good and true. All the numbers sounded official.
