If you took out an online payday loan from a company affiliated with AMG Services, you may be getting a check in the mail from the FTC. The $505 million the FTC is returning to consumers makes this the largest refund program the agency has ever administered.

The FTC sued AMG and Scott A. Tucker for deceptive payday lending. When consumers took out loans, AMG said they would charge a one-time finance fee. Instead, AMG made multiple illegal withdrawals from peoples’ bank accounts and charged hidden fees. As a result, people paid far more for the loans than they had agreed to.

In 2016 the FTC won a court case against AMG and Scott Tucker. Then in 2017, a jury convicted Tucker and his attorney of crimes related to the lending scheme. The FTC and Department of Justice are using money obtained in both court actions to give refunds to consumers.

Here are answers to questions about AMG refunds.

Who will get a refund? Checks are being sent to consumers who took out loans between January 2008 and January 2013 from these AMG-related companies: 500FastCash, Advantage Cash Services, Ameriloan, OneClickCash, Star Cash Processing, UnitedCashLoans, and USFastCash.

How many people will get refunds? More than 1.1 million people will get refunds.

How does the FTC know who to send the checks to? The FTC and a refund administrator have used AMG’s business records to identify eligible consumers and calculate their refunds.

I’m eligible for a refund. What do I need to do? If you borrowed from one of the lenders listed above between January 2008 and January 2013, you don’t need to do anything. The checks are being mailed to eligible consumers automatically. There is no application process. If you borrowed from one of those lenders before January 2008, please call 1-866-730-8147.

How can I get more information? Visit the FTC’s AMG refund page or call 1-866-730-8147.

Three tips from the FTC:

  1. If you get a check, deposit or cash it within 60 days.
  2. The FTC never asks people to pay money or give information to cash refund checks. If someone asks you to pay to get a refund from the FTC, it’s a scam.
  3. The FTC has advice if you’re thinking about a payday loan or an online payday loan.

Hello I received 2 checks too and thought it wasn’t real. It was quite a large amount. I was scared to deposit it. The page I detached the check from did have an explanation and referred me to http://www.ftc.gov/AMG so I looked to it to find out if it was legit. Seems to be...I will say my bank dos put a hold on part of it when I deposited it. I thought a federal check wouldn’t have a hold?

I bank with Bank of America and what the teller explained to me is the hold on mine was automatic due to A)The issuing bank being a different financial institution and B) the amount being much larger than something I normally deposit but she said she was not concerned about the actual validity of the check

I just called US Bank fraud department and was informed that these checks are legitimate. I also called the Rust Consulting group and verified the same information is legit. The 800-730-8147 number has been extremely busy and hold times are between 45-75 minutes.

I received on today and was skeptical. I even tried to call the number and I couldn’t get through. I went to the site on the letter. I was hesitant to deposit it and said to my son. I received $1307. I deposit as I made sure I looked for the marks. If it was fake it wouldn’t be on this site.

I just spoke with an agent with US Bank and she said that the checks are legit and are being sent to different consumers. You can contact the FTC at the number on the check or take it to a US Bank to cash the check or verify your check . Unfortunately, there is not a US Bank where I live, but I will still have my bank verify again before I deposit it into my account!

If you got a check made out to someone who is deceased, and you are in charge of that person's estate, you can call Rust Consulting, the company that the FTC hired to manage the refund process. Call 1-866-730-8147. They will explain what to do.

Guess I’m not getting one then. Seems like all the hype is over. Very odd I remember using them entirely too much in my younger days as a new mom. They tormented me and my checking account till my bank finally closed all access to it. Oh well maybe next time.

What if I received a check and never took out a payday loan? Are there other companies that were impacted? What information can I find out about the loan that resulted in the refund check?

I received my check on Monday and deposited it today. Will the FTC investigate loans with any of these companies after 2013 to make sure they are not overcharging on the interest.

The letter you got from the FTC said your check is a partial refund. It says that because the amount of your check is less than the total amount you paid to AMG Services, Inc. when it illegally charged you undisclosed and inflated fees. The FTC has sent out all the money that is available.

So I received a check today for $3,411.00. Definitely wasn't expecting that, however I didn't know anything about them being sued and Google explained it all to me, by researching. I've never heard of US BANK in which the check is written off of. I have since moved and purchased my home and they still found me. I will be calling the bank tomorrow to verify this check before depositing it into my account.

Received my check to today and I did take out a payday loan from the payday loan lenders in question. But I'm afraid to deposit this check due to several calls I received a couple of months ago from a payday loan scammer stating I owed money for a payday loan that I never applied for.

I received 2 hefty checks and was very suspicious. I have contacted the better business bureau and the phone number on the letter with the check; however, I have not had a conversation with neither party. I began to research the Internet and I do believe what I am reading and will make the deposit tomorrow. There are lots of articles on line; US Bank is a legitimate bank (did unethical practices and paying for it now), and we all know the Federal Trade Commission is legitimate. Furthermore, 2 of the companies listed are companies I used in the past. I believe it's real y'all.
