The FTC is getting reports about people pretending to be from the Social Security Administration (SSA) who are trying to get your Social Security number and even your money. In one version of the scam, the caller says your Social Security number has been linked to a crime (often, he says it happened in Texas) involving drugs or sending money out of the country illegally. He then says your Social is blocked – but he might ask you for a fee to reactivate it, or to get a new number. And he will ask you to confirm your Social Security number.

In other variations, he says that somebody used your Social Security number to apply for credit cards, and you could lose your benefits. Or he might warn you that your bank account is about to be seized, that you need to withdraw your money, and that he’ll tell you how to keep it safe.

But all of these are scams. Here’s what you need to know:

  • The SSA will never (ever) call and ask for your Social Security number. It won’t ask you to pay anything. And it won’t call to threaten your benefits.
  • Your caller ID might show the SSA’s real phone number (1-800-772-1213), but that’s not the real SSA calling. Computers make it easy to show any number on caller ID. You can’t trust what you see there.
  • Never give your Social Security number to anyone who contacts you. Don’t confirm the last 4 digits. And don’t give a bank account or credit card number – ever – to anybody who contacts you asking for it.
  • Remember that anyone who tells you to wire money, pay with a gift card, or send cash is a scammer. Always. No matter who they say they are.

If you’re worried about a call from someone who claims to be from the Social Security Administration, get off the phone. Then call the real SSA at 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778). If you’ve spotted a scam, then tell the FTC at ftc.gov/complaint.

I just received a call from 866-978-8163 with a threat that my SS # will be suspended for "violations of use in the state of Texas". I live in North Carolina which is a clear indication that this was a call attempting to get my SS#. I quickly hung up the phone . PLEASE BE CAREFUL. This is a disgusting attempt to defraud American citizens so don't be fooled ! The people I spoke to had thick mid Eastern accents .

I do not answer calls from unknown numbers. I received a call today and the voicemail that was left was from a 9-digit number (888) 892-151. However, it was the same automated message reported by so many others stating that my Social Security number has been suspended because suspicious activity was found running under my Social Security number. This is Social Security Fraud and the Inspector General's office handles this type of activity. The hotline number is 1-800-269-0271 (TTY 1-866-501-2101).

I just received a call from "Social Security" office at 1-800-576-4846 stating that my social security number has been breached. I hung up right away and called my daughter who called the telephone number. The person that answered was from a foreign country but answered "Social Security, how can I help you" and she hung up. We will now be calling the social security office itself to inform them of this scam.

The last two days both me andmmy husband have gotten call front the " social security administration" stating that our numbers have been suspended and linked to crimes and an arrest warrant has been issued. Today I pressed 1 to talk to an agent.. went through all the B.S. questions and have him a game name and address.. he wanted the last four of my ss# I wouldn't give it to him. I told him I would report him and he was a P.O.S for trying to scam people.. he said I can't report him!! I said of course cause your a fraud and you scramble the numbers. I know better to get caught in a scam like this, but I feel sorry for those that don't know any better.. he said his name was Alex White badge # 472P9863 with a heavy middle eastern accent . The # he called from was 510)112-7901 The background was so loud I could barley hear him.. obviously a scam call center.

This individual called me from this number 479-370-0051 saying he is from Social Security Administration and my SS needs to be suspended because it is used in some money laundering activity. This person connected me to another individual who is supposedly from US Marshall. He asked me to take all my money from my bank account because if my SS account is suspended I will no longer be able to withdraw the money. He even asked me to be on the speakerphone, go to the bank in real time and then let me know when I reach the bank. I got really suspicious when he asked me to withdraw the money at my bank and come out.

Got a call from (806)414-3422 today stating that my SSDA benefits were being suspended due to fraudulent activities. I asked who was making such a claim and was given some name by some Indian sounding foreigner that I couldn’t understand. I replied with “who”? And he gave me the same incoherent name. And I said again who is lodging a complaint against me, and he replied that he was the agent that was lodging the complaint. I told him to call back when he learned how to better speak English. I looked up my SSI account online, and found no record of any type of suspicious activity on my account. Is anybody reporting this to the inspector general for SSI? I don’t want to give the government any reason to start looking into my affairs because I don’t trust it 100% either.

Received and automated message on my mobile. Male voice saying they are from the SSA asking me to call back because there is criminal activity linking my SS# and immediate action is necessary otherwise I will be arrested. I hung up before hearing the rest of the message. But out of curiosity I called back caller id on my mobile # listed (239) 324-4346. A male with an accent answered "Social Security Administration". I hung up. It bothered me that the number I called back went through and that a person actually answered "Social Security Administration" . So later that day I called back that same # from a blocked line. What do you know? It has a recording saying that the person at this # cannot be reached at this time and I can leave a message! So if you need to verify a fraud do not call back the # from the line they called you at! Call from another line (preferably a blocked line) to be sure. That's how they get you to bite since they have your # they can still spoof you if you try to call them back! They're trying everything to make us fall for their tricks. Be vigilant.

My problem is that I receive, literally, 20 or more of these same calls every day. It is always an 866 number and I just let them ring through and then block that number. But, of course, there are hundreds if not thousands of these calling from a roto-dialer. It's a scam, and I know it, but I just wish there was a way I could stop these constant calls. Ugh!!
