The FTC is getting reports about people pretending to be from the Social Security Administration (SSA) who are trying to get your Social Security number and even your money. In one version of the scam, the caller says your Social Security number has been linked to a crime (often, he says it happened in Texas) involving drugs or sending money out of the country illegally. He then says your Social is blocked – but he might ask you for a fee to reactivate it, or to get a new number. And he will ask you to confirm your Social Security number.

In other variations, he says that somebody used your Social Security number to apply for credit cards, and you could lose your benefits. Or he might warn you that your bank account is about to be seized, that you need to withdraw your money, and that he’ll tell you how to keep it safe.

But all of these are scams. Here’s what you need to know:

  • The SSA will never (ever) call and ask for your Social Security number. It won’t ask you to pay anything. And it won’t call to threaten your benefits.
  • Your caller ID might show the SSA’s real phone number (1-800-772-1213), but that’s not the real SSA calling. Computers make it easy to show any number on caller ID. You can’t trust what you see there.
  • Never give your Social Security number to anyone who contacts you. Don’t confirm the last 4 digits. And don’t give a bank account or credit card number – ever – to anybody who contacts you asking for it.
  • Remember that anyone who tells you to wire money, pay with a gift card, or send cash is a scammer. Always. No matter who they say they are.

If you’re worried about a call from someone who claims to be from the Social Security Administration, get off the phone. Then call the real SSA at 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778). If you’ve spotted a scam, then tell the FTC at ftc.gov/complaint.

the numbers 2024455577 and 2126710347 are calling leaving messages about my social security number being compromised and that it will be suspended. I looked up both numbers and they are personal phone numbers. Who do I report this scam to?

6465838920 Digital recording says that the person's Social Security Account has been disabled due to suspicious activity and to press 1 if the person is interested in details. Obviously a fake attempt by a roboscammer. These are more and more popular. They were being stopped by apps, but a recent additions to restrictions on apps by Google have made it so that numbers can't be blocked automatically. Also suspicious.

Call from a very official sounding voice telling me my SS# has been suspended and asked that I call 210 361 7187 which I promptly did and was greeted by a very foreign accented English speaker. I told him thanks for suspending my SS# and that they were fools if they though I would fall for this scam. I know it didn't do any good but I felt better telling the low life off!

I never lift unfamiliar or unknown numbers. Today when I am at work I got call from 2142162370 and accidentally lifted and the guy asked me to verify my First name, Then i asked back to tell the details why he need he told first he need to verify then he will tell I said SSA people never call so unless i know the details why he need I will not tell then that guy irritated and yelling with a loud voice on me by saying that my identity stolen and some one Money laundering with my id . Then I said if you are calling from SSA go and find my details from your systems. Then he yelling what is your problem I will make a serious case filed on me. Then I yelled back on him just shut up and put phone down then he cut the call immediately. I shared this with my co workers and found out that some people they know given their information because of scare when heard yelling by the caller. My suggestion is even caller yell don't scare and don't give your details.

At 7:15 a.m. AZ. ( too early for calls), received call for warning my SS was going to be suspended for suspicious activities. That will wake you up! So, sick of at least 12 phony calls every day!! I've had as many as 40 in one day. Thought I should report it. When will something ever get done about this abuse. I'm elderly, with many medical problems, this only adds to stress.

Have received numberous calls on cell phone saying SS number will be deleted and I will no longer receive benefits unless I respond to the caller. Numbers are 1-800-417-556 & 1-800-327-877. All of course bogus & I have not picked up nor responded. Now how are calls with only 9 numbers vs 10 getting through and how are these people getting my cell number? It should be illegal for all vendors/contacts to give our our numbers without our specific permission!!! When is this going to happen??

Today I received 9 separate calls (all different phone numbers), that left voicemails stating they were the SSA calling regarding suspension of my SSN. I don't ever answer a call that I don't recognize the number and all were left as voicemail. These calls are all robotically generated. I block the numbers on my phone and submit fraud report on white pages. This is highly concerning for people who may not be as diligent as myself. Some of the phone numbers: 844-842-2178 844-842-8765 754-206-8082 844-851-6801 857-444-7560

I received an automated call from 805-212-9180 that left the below message. Totally knew it was a scam, but glad to see this info posted here. This call is from the Department of the Social Security Administration. So if you want to know about this case, just press one. Thank you.

I got a call from 1-800-035-7505 saying my SSN is suspended due to suspicious activities. I knew it was a scam. I took the call and gave it back to them. They hung up. Next day got a call again, I answered and gave incorrect name, they asked me my country, gave incorrect country name. Whatever little information they have, they realized its not right and disconnected.

Getting relentless calls on both my cell phone and home phone. At least 4 times a day to both. It is a nine digit number (888823565) so phone can't call back and won't block ("invalid number"). I have reported and am caring for my aging mother who needs to sleep. This is agonizing!

Got a robo call saying it was the Social Security Administration and to call them back right away - called from # 315-284-3332 (Adams, NY) When I called back, I could hear numerous 'agents' and the man who answered obviously had a very thick accent. There were no prompts - he answered on the first ring...super odd and very clearly a scam.

Already today received 6 calls from 800 numbers. No pauses. Did not identify any name associated with the SSN. Dead giveaway! Couldn't even use the word "suspended". Could be a foreign scammer. Don't fall for this crap, and just don't answer your phone. If it's important, they will leave a voicemail. THis one was obviously not important.
