Earlier this month, we told you about a growing scam: people pretend to be from the Social Security Administration (SSA) and try to get your Social Security number or your money. That scam is now growing exponentially. To compare: in 2017, we heard from 3,200 people about SSA imposter scams, and those people reported losing nearly $210,000. So far THIS year: more than 35,000 people have reported the scam, and they tell us they’ve lost $10 million.

Here’s what one of those scam calls sound like:

Scammers are saying your Social Security number (SSN) has been suspended because of suspicious activity, or because it’s been involved in a crime. Sometimes, the scammer wants you to confirm your SSN to reactivate it. Sometimes, he’ll say your bank account is about to be seized – but he’ll tell you what to do to keep it safe. (Often, that involves putting your money on gift cards and giving him the codes – which, of course, means that your money is gone.)

Oh, and your caller ID often shows the real SSA phone number (1-800-772-1213) when these scammers call – but they’re faking that number. It’s not the real SSA calling.

Here's what to know:

  • Your Social Security number is not about to be suspended. You don’t have to verify your number to anyone who calls out of the blue. And your bank accounts are not about to be seized.
  • SSA will never call to threaten your benefits or tell you to wire money, send cash, or put money on gift cards. Anyone who tells you to do those things is a scammer. Every time.
  • The real SSA number is 1-800-772-1213, but scammers are putting that number in the caller ID. If you’re worried about what the caller says, hang up and call 1-800-772-1213 to speak to the real SSA. Even if the wait time is long, confirm with the real SSA before responding to one of these calls.
  • Never give any part of your Social Security number to anyone who contacts you. Or your bank account or credit card number.

If you get one of these calls, tell the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.

+ 913-348-7526 (Kansas) - recording about SSN activity. Upon trying to get them to pick up with option 1 "talk with an officer" the line just disconnects (note - be careful doing this - offer no info - the goal is to get info from them). Attempts to call the number back ring busy & immediate disconnect - obvious fraud.

Just received scam call from 843.345.5479. Contents are: “Regarding the legal enforcement action executed under your Social Security number for suspicious and fraudulent activities _________ in the state of Texas and we just suspended your Social Security number ignoring this will be an intentional second attempt to avoid initial appearance before a magistrate judge or a grand jury for a federal criminal offense this is the final attempt to reach you so if you want to know about this case just press one…”

Go one of these calls - very convincing - They gave me names and Badge numbers - told me that someone had used my SS to rent properties in Texas. As I talked with them, 2 things stood out.- how much personal information they had on me, and that they gave me very western names with very Indian accents. While talking to them, I googled the number and it came up as a scam number, which I repeated. They put me through to a US Marshal (and that number was spoofed to the actual US Marshals office) My experience - I went in thinking it was a scam, they convinced me for a short period of time that it was not a scam (due to the amount of personal information they had) And then I resolved that it was a scam because: SS department will never call you to tell you that you are the suspect in a crime. As we talked, they ramped up the fear talk - working hard to convince me that I was now a suspect in an international crime. To get a new SS number, I would have to stay on the line for 2 hours while they got all my information in order to change over my SS number. Longer story short: If a call comes in from a number that is not identified, don't bother to answer. Don't call back on a message left. If the federal government calls, it's not a robo call and it will never be to tell you that they think you committed a crime. Number can be spoofed. Don't ever give personal information out over the phone. Ever.

I live in NH and got a call from 603-361-6650. Very generic message saying there is suspicious activity involving my ss number. If I don’t get in touch with them there will be a warrant out for my arrest, blah blah blah. Says to press 1. I did just for the hell of it and a man with a VERY heavy Indian accent answered. I laughed and hung up.

All seriousness aside, I know these are scams and the first time you here one it's a bit alarming, but Either ignore them or report them to the SSA.

I just received this scam call. The guy was pretty aggressive and knew quite a bit of my personal information, including address. When he asked me to verify the last four digits of my SSN it triggered me to start asking questions like please provide me with an official government number I can call back to verify what you're telling me. The scammer who had a difficult-to-understand accent said his name was Dave Brown. He said I had been linked to illegal activity in El Paso, Texas involving the transfer of money across the boarder. He said my SSN was suspended and that a U.S. Marshal and SSA officer would be coming to my home in person tomorrow to go over all of my assets to verify that the vehicles and accounts used for crime were not mine. Two other calls were coming in at the same time, supposedly from Texas State Police and U.S. Marshals office. Here were the numbers I recorded: SSA Representative Dave Brown 951-365-6489 (Dave called from 865-482-3870) Texas Officer "Dean Morris" 512-601-0838 (Officer call originated from 512-424-2211) Be sure to call the SSA Inspector General at 800-269-0271
