Earlier this month, we told you about a growing scam: people pretend to be from the Social Security Administration (SSA) and try to get your Social Security number or your money. That scam is now growing exponentially. To compare: in 2017, we heard from 3,200 people about SSA imposter scams, and those people reported losing nearly $210,000. So far THIS year: more than 35,000 people have reported the scam, and they tell us they’ve lost $10 million.

Here’s what one of those scam calls sound like:

Scammers are saying your Social Security number (SSN) has been suspended because of suspicious activity, or because it’s been involved in a crime. Sometimes, the scammer wants you to confirm your SSN to reactivate it. Sometimes, he’ll say your bank account is about to be seized – but he’ll tell you what to do to keep it safe. (Often, that involves putting your money on gift cards and giving him the codes – which, of course, means that your money is gone.)

Oh, and your caller ID often shows the real SSA phone number (1-800-772-1213) when these scammers call – but they’re faking that number. It’s not the real SSA calling.

Here's what to know:

  • Your Social Security number is not about to be suspended. You don’t have to verify your number to anyone who calls out of the blue. And your bank accounts are not about to be seized.
  • SSA will never call to threaten your benefits or tell you to wire money, send cash, or put money on gift cards. Anyone who tells you to do those things is a scammer. Every time.
  • The real SSA number is 1-800-772-1213, but scammers are putting that number in the caller ID. If you’re worried about what the caller says, hang up and call 1-800-772-1213 to speak to the real SSA. Even if the wait time is long, confirm with the real SSA before responding to one of these calls.
  • Never give any part of your Social Security number to anyone who contacts you. Or your bank account or credit card number.

If you get one of these calls, tell the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.

I got 2. Social security scam calls. Both fall under the (301)- 921/ - - - - . The reason i had to put the 4 dash at the end was because the las 4 number was different. The first scam call ended with a 2496 while the second one ended with a 3657. Im not 21. And just barely passed the age of 18. Yes I am still in school and this is disgusting to me. My phone doesn’t pick up the number as a scam call so I beg. If you get a call looking like a (301)- 921/ - - - - , also talks about social Security number don’t fall for it.

Got a call from (661)370-4095 claiming to be WALMART (caller ID). I answered and a machine started talking and said "my social security number has been linked with fraudulent activity and a lawsuit and arrest warrant has been filed against me." I was instructed to press 1 after listening to the message. After waiting for a minute or two a guy with an accent answered and asked for my name and age. I got suspicious and ended the call.

I got one today from number 1-678-763-5276. Here’s the transcript “ “This message is intended to contact you regarding the legal enforcement action executed under your Social Security number for suspensions and fraudulent activities committed in the state of Texas and we just suspended your Social Security number ignoring this will be an intentional second attempt to avoid initial appearance before a magistrate judge or a grand jury for a federal criminal offense this is the final attempt to reach you so if you want to know about this case just press one…” I tried to call back and the number had been disconnected.

My sister recieved a call from "United States Management Services" who claim they can get her $800 more a month from Social Security because she has an excellent credit score. They only take the first month's difference as their fee. They already knew her ss number and specific things that would be on her credit report. Anyone heard of this? I'm sure she's been scammed. I told her to call them back and ask for their claims in writing.

I received the same voicemail. When I called, they said my SS# was used for money laundering and drug trafficking and they were going to suspend my SS#. When I told them this felt like a scam they got very defensive and hung up. I paid to find out who the number which they called from, (806) 639-5871, was listed under. It is Queen Spa Nail. I called the number again and they answered, "Social Security Administration". I said, "I thought this was Queen Spa Nail?" She said, "Oh you looking for spa!" and hung up. I immediately received another phone call with the same recording from a different number, 870-450-7365.

More needs to be done to stop these callers. Majority of them have foreign accents. My Dad’s phone number is unlisted and they still call. These scammers will also call from local numbers that they were able to get and clone. I try to record my Dad talking to them. I have one good recording. Also these letters of you will win money if you mail back with money. What a waste of paper!

I just received a call like this today (9/11/2020). Said my ss# was involved in money laundering and suspicious activity. The recording requested I call them at the number that showed up on the caller ID, which was 877-245-5902. I called and at first a recording answered saying my call would be answered in the order it was received. Then a man came on the line introducing himself as a social security rep. He kept asking for my name and when I wouldn't give it to him he hung up on me! SCAMMERS!

Voice mail message fragment from 844-741-0370 - received on Sept. 14, 2020 @12:04 PM EDT: "...intentional crime an arrest warrant will be issued under your name for a crime investigation so before we stop your banking and government services kindly call back to connect your call to Social Security officer to resolve the case file yourself before it goes to court house call back urgent..." -- Low quality female synthesized voice. Played as string of words, with no pauses, inflection, or intonation beyond what one would get from an old digital voice chip circa early to mid 1990's. Definitely not from a prerecorded human voice.

Received a call msg Today stating my social security number was being fradulent me used in Texas and if I did not return their call I would stand before a judge. I live in California I call the number back using my landline which is restricted. The his panic mail claimed he did not call me I said well you were concerned about my social security number and he hung up clue number 1. Called again I said we must have gotten disconnected. He hung up. A 3rd time he would not answer however I told him I reported him to the FBI and the FCC. I despise these scammers and more must be done to prevent it. My 85 year old neighbor came to see me hysterically crying that the IRS was demanding $5000 by the end of the day it's took a 1/2 hour to calm this poor woman down she just lost her husband of 65 years say you can imagine how vulnerable she felt. This is why I despise them so please do something to end this nonsense Prosecute And hold them accountable
