Earlier this month, we told you about a growing scam: people pretend to be from the Social Security Administration (SSA) and try to get your Social Security number or your money. That scam is now growing exponentially. To compare: in 2017, we heard from 3,200 people about SSA imposter scams, and those people reported losing nearly $210,000. So far THIS year: more than 35,000 people have reported the scam, and they tell us they’ve lost $10 million.

Here’s what one of those scam calls sound like:

Scammers are saying your Social Security number (SSN) has been suspended because of suspicious activity, or because it’s been involved in a crime. Sometimes, the scammer wants you to confirm your SSN to reactivate it. Sometimes, he’ll say your bank account is about to be seized – but he’ll tell you what to do to keep it safe. (Often, that involves putting your money on gift cards and giving him the codes – which, of course, means that your money is gone.)

Oh, and your caller ID often shows the real SSA phone number (1-800-772-1213) when these scammers call – but they’re faking that number. It’s not the real SSA calling.

Here's what to know:

  • Your Social Security number is not about to be suspended. You don’t have to verify your number to anyone who calls out of the blue. And your bank accounts are not about to be seized.
  • SSA will never call to threaten your benefits or tell you to wire money, send cash, or put money on gift cards. Anyone who tells you to do those things is a scammer. Every time.
  • The real SSA number is 1-800-772-1213, but scammers are putting that number in the caller ID. If you’re worried about what the caller says, hang up and call 1-800-772-1213 to speak to the real SSA. Even if the wait time is long, confirm with the real SSA before responding to one of these calls.
  • Never give any part of your Social Security number to anyone who contacts you. Or your bank account or credit card number.

If you get one of these calls, tell the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.

I just got a phone call from Officer Jason Roy telling me my ssi number had been suspended from illegal activity. In El paso Tx. The number he called me from was 1-205-269-6412 and 1-205-583-1117 . The reason he called from both numbers is because I didnt answer the first one. Always tell them you are going to call your SSI department before you answer anything for anyone.

I have been getting calls all day from 303-913-4016 /303-913-1984 / 303-913-1780. When I answered, they said my social security # has been involved in criminal activities. Then I was transferred to a girl that wanted my social security number. She couldn't even barely speak English. They have tried this about four or five days ago from completely different numbers.

Caller claimed there was identity theft using my information in Texas. The first caller said he was from Social Security Administration. The second from US Marshalls in Washington DC with number +1 202 307 9100. They asked for me to empty my bank account and place all the money in gift card or secure phone wallet and that a new social would be issued to me tomorrow. If i don't do that Cops will arrest you and put you in bar. They are coming to your home in 1-1/2 hours They said officers will come to see me tomorrow.

Just saw a voicemail left yesterday and it came from phone number (833) 458-1101. It stated this: Warrant will be issued under your name for a client investigation so before we stop your banking and government services kindly call back to connect your call to Social Security officer to resolve the case file yourself before it goes to court house call back urgent. That was the recorded message verbatim. Never received anything like this before and it is a horrid, nasty business to be on the receiving end of this type of message. We use our phones for important business and to stay in touch with our family and friends, not to be threatened by crazy people. I entered the phone number on Google and it brought up all sorts of international related data, mostly in another language. I have a policy as do my kids. If you don't recognize the caller's number or have them as a bonafide contact, let it go to voicemail. Report these types of fraud tactics to whomever you can so we as Americans can get them off our planet.

Same Scam Unknown caller Robocall 910-933-0979 Basically on the voicemail it said there was a Social Security Warrant for the arrest of someone. They were going to come arrest someone the next day. area code for this call was N.Carolina I live in Ohio. Plus this stuff has been published in the AARP magazine. Some of these people are already in Jail or Prison making these calls. We have call blocking devices and nomorobo on our phones so we get a lot less of these suspicious calls or at least a lot less go thru.

I'm in Canada and 2 days in a row now, this voice message (portions of it) has been left in my message box. The caller is spoofing a local number (different ones each call) and it's basically the same message: "call me back so you don't get in trouble" which is part of the scare tactic of this scammer. DO NOT call back.
