Earlier this month, we told you about a growing scam: people pretend to be from the Social Security Administration (SSA) and try to get your Social Security number or your money. That scam is now growing exponentially. To compare: in 2017, we heard from 3,200 people about SSA imposter scams, and those people reported losing nearly $210,000. So far THIS year: more than 35,000 people have reported the scam, and they tell us they’ve lost $10 million.

Here’s what one of those scam calls sound like:

Scammers are saying your Social Security number (SSN) has been suspended because of suspicious activity, or because it’s been involved in a crime. Sometimes, the scammer wants you to confirm your SSN to reactivate it. Sometimes, he’ll say your bank account is about to be seized – but he’ll tell you what to do to keep it safe. (Often, that involves putting your money on gift cards and giving him the codes – which, of course, means that your money is gone.)

Oh, and your caller ID often shows the real SSA phone number (1-800-772-1213) when these scammers call – but they’re faking that number. It’s not the real SSA calling.

Here's what to know:

  • Your Social Security number is not about to be suspended. You don’t have to verify your number to anyone who calls out of the blue. And your bank accounts are not about to be seized.
  • SSA will never call to threaten your benefits or tell you to wire money, send cash, or put money on gift cards. Anyone who tells you to do those things is a scammer. Every time.
  • The real SSA number is 1-800-772-1213, but scammers are putting that number in the caller ID. If you’re worried about what the caller says, hang up and call 1-800-772-1213 to speak to the real SSA. Even if the wait time is long, confirm with the real SSA before responding to one of these calls.
  • Never give any part of your Social Security number to anyone who contacts you. Or your bank account or credit card number.

If you get one of these calls, tell the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.

I just received a call from (978) 918-7420 stating that my social security number was being suspended because of an arrest warrant in Texas where they (supposedly) found 10 Bank accounts in my name, 9 credit cards in my name, and drugs were found as well. They gave me a badge number, officers name, and an arrest warrant number. At first I thought it was real and my identity was stolen, but then the man on the phone (Indian accent) told me that I would have to pay $1,000 to not have my social security number suspended or cancelled, and he started talking about gift cards etc, at that point, I knew it was a scam

I just received a call from 662-650-3407 that was a SS Scam. It was a machine that asked me to press #1 and it transferred me to a gentleman with a Middle Eastern accent giving me the name "Officer Mike Tomlin". He asked for my name and my SS#. When I would not provide the SS #, he instead asked for the last 4 digits. When I would not provide that he hung up and I reported the issue to the Attorney General's office.

I just got a voice message on my cell that sounded so similar with a persuasive mail voice. First thing I did was look up social security phone call with the callers number on it via a web search on the intenet. Your link popped up and described the scam. Thank you for reassuring us to never give out our SS#. This is also the same message I get from my credit card companies, they also say NEVER give out your cc # and we will never call you asking you for it. I feel so sorry for all the people that got hooked in. On another issue my old laptop froze up and I got a call from some company that basically sold me a security system for my laptop for $400 that is basically a scam too. I know I need to look things up on the 'Net always beore. getting hooked. Be skeptical folks there are a lot of dishonest people out there who are basically thieves. Thank you FTC for posting this information.

I've gotten about 8 calls in the last 2 days. They all start with 248-892-XXXX I started writing down the ending numbers: 8140, 5016, 3279, 2255, 9224, 2494 & 3462. I answered 1 call yesterday and then hung up after I heard a similar recording. Now the calls keep coming and I just block the numbers after each call. My cell starts with similar numbers - I wonder if this is part of the scam - to make you think its someone you know or something.

I just got a call from a local area code 517-945-9028 which is in the area of my local social security office so that's why the startled me a little bit because it would be coming from that possible area with a 517945 xxxx. But they said that they've noticed some suspicious activity on my account and will be suspending it to please press one to speak to a supervisor. That's absolutely ridiculous. It's still shakes you up though because right now I'm actually technically homeless although at the very moment I'm at a friend's house I'm waiting on a house to close and if anything did happen to my social security I would be totally screwed.
