Earlier this month, we told you about a growing scam: people pretend to be from the Social Security Administration (SSA) and try to get your Social Security number or your money. That scam is now growing exponentially. To compare: in 2017, we heard from 3,200 people about SSA imposter scams, and those people reported losing nearly $210,000. So far THIS year: more than 35,000 people have reported the scam, and they tell us they’ve lost $10 million.

Here’s what one of those scam calls sound like:

Scammers are saying your Social Security number (SSN) has been suspended because of suspicious activity, or because it’s been involved in a crime. Sometimes, the scammer wants you to confirm your SSN to reactivate it. Sometimes, he’ll say your bank account is about to be seized – but he’ll tell you what to do to keep it safe. (Often, that involves putting your money on gift cards and giving him the codes – which, of course, means that your money is gone.)

Oh, and your caller ID often shows the real SSA phone number (1-800-772-1213) when these scammers call – but they’re faking that number. It’s not the real SSA calling.

Here's what to know:

  • Your Social Security number is not about to be suspended. You don’t have to verify your number to anyone who calls out of the blue. And your bank accounts are not about to be seized.
  • SSA will never call to threaten your benefits or tell you to wire money, send cash, or put money on gift cards. Anyone who tells you to do those things is a scammer. Every time.
  • The real SSA number is 1-800-772-1213, but scammers are putting that number in the caller ID. If you’re worried about what the caller says, hang up and call 1-800-772-1213 to speak to the real SSA. Even if the wait time is long, confirm with the real SSA before responding to one of these calls.
  • Never give any part of your Social Security number to anyone who contacts you. Or your bank account or credit card number.

If you get one of these calls, tell the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.

On Dec 3, 2020 I received a call. The recording stated that my SSN was being used near the border of South TX and that I needed to hold on to speak to an officer about the fraudulent use. I hung up as it was coming from a local phone number.

Received this exact auto voicemail from a 267 area code. Something about my SSN being used for illegal activity. Please don't fall for this anyone. They are just fishing to see if they get a response and preying on desperate people in desperate times. Very sad and pathetic. I hope these scammers get caught.

They've contacted me, for the first time, via these two different numbers (281)373-3559 and (281)602-3135. They're now claiming to have an 'officer' to speak to if you press #1, but it's the SAME exact call and automated voice.

I did receive a call today and yesterday. Do not give any information to anyone over the phone or even in person pertaining to your date of birth, legal name, social security number, legal address, nor even a driver's license or passport information. There are so many scams going on around the world, the US is very vulnerable at this time and countries know it.

Have been receiving calls that legal action is to be taken, and warrant for my arrest is to be issued. I tried to call the number, and a person with a middle-eastern accent stated they were social security. The number was accidentally deleted, and ATT could not trace it.

740-795-8926 For those in the Columbus Ohio area...these scammers will use a number that reflects your local area code. The automated recording said there was fraudulent activity regarding my bank account that will result in an arrest warrant if I do not speak with an officer from the federal government. It then directed me to press one to speak with an officer. That doesnt even make sense as I have no bank account. I didn't believe it for a second but I feel so bad for elderly people who aren't tech savvy enough to know better and lose their life savings. Makes me sick to think about. Please, anyone with elderly family members, warn them of these types of calls so they dont fall victim to these predators.

The scammers are working this hard right now. It's a robo call that uses the scam listed above and requires the receiver to press 1 to get more information. I've blocked the number twice now and it keeps changing the number by a few digits so it continues to get through. And it mimics a local number to make it look familiar. It's awful to think some are falling for it.

I just received a scam call. They were pretending to be from Social Security . They said my social security was being suspended because of fraud coming from Texas..The number they used was 740-380-3501. I know this is a scam because this isn´t the number for social security. There has to be technology to stop these scam callers. I´ve already blocked many numbers on my phone. I´ve missed important health calls because they sometimes even use the local hospital number. I never give out any personal information including ss number.

Just got a call (direct to voicemail) that said they're going to serve me tomorrow between 3 and 5 p.m. at the sheriff's department. Number is 321-758-8759, which is in Miami. (I'm in Maryland.) I'm supposed to call that number for "one last chance" to avoid being served. I might be old, but I'm not stupid.

I am being called 6 to 12 times a day. I have talked to them several times asking them to take me off their lists. I inform them that I know they are a scam because they will not give me information to contact and visit. I also inform them that when I called the SSA to confirm they said nothing was wrong. I have tried being nice, being funny, being mean, being angry. I don't know what else to do. The operators deny it. They hang up on me if I start asking for addresses or phone numbers. They never know where I live. They usually don't even put me in the right state. They will not stop calling me. I am missing important calls because of all the scam calls. What can we do?

These scammers called my cell phone today. I answered because I was expecting a call from a new patient. They started out telling me about problems with my soc. sec. number. That I needed to log-in to some address and fill out the form and enter a credit card number. The scary part was that if I refused to do this within 3 hours, my car would be "picked up." And then proceeded to tell me the actual year, make, model, and license plate number of my car. How did they get that information? I contacted the Indianapolis police dept. and an officer came out to file a report. This is getting really scary!
