Earlier this month, we told you about a growing scam: people pretend to be from the Social Security Administration (SSA) and try to get your Social Security number or your money. That scam is now growing exponentially. To compare: in 2017, we heard from 3,200 people about SSA imposter scams, and those people reported losing nearly $210,000. So far THIS year: more than 35,000 people have reported the scam, and they tell us they’ve lost $10 million.

Here’s what one of those scam calls sound like:

Scammers are saying your Social Security number (SSN) has been suspended because of suspicious activity, or because it’s been involved in a crime. Sometimes, the scammer wants you to confirm your SSN to reactivate it. Sometimes, he’ll say your bank account is about to be seized – but he’ll tell you what to do to keep it safe. (Often, that involves putting your money on gift cards and giving him the codes – which, of course, means that your money is gone.)

Oh, and your caller ID often shows the real SSA phone number (1-800-772-1213) when these scammers call – but they’re faking that number. It’s not the real SSA calling.

Here's what to know:

  • Your Social Security number is not about to be suspended. You don’t have to verify your number to anyone who calls out of the blue. And your bank accounts are not about to be seized.
  • SSA will never call to threaten your benefits or tell you to wire money, send cash, or put money on gift cards. Anyone who tells you to do those things is a scammer. Every time.
  • The real SSA number is 1-800-772-1213, but scammers are putting that number in the caller ID. If you’re worried about what the caller says, hang up and call 1-800-772-1213 to speak to the real SSA. Even if the wait time is long, confirm with the real SSA before responding to one of these calls.
  • Never give any part of your Social Security number to anyone who contacts you. Or your bank account or credit card number.

If you get one of these calls, tell the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.

Been receiving calls multiple times a day, at least 5 a day. Every time I block the number, they call from another number. (The last 2 digits are diff.) Leave the same VM, my SS# has been suspended... They call so often I recognize the number & let it go to VM. I know there are tons of these, but I wish that once we report the number there was a way for FTC or someone to have it disconnected. So frustrating. Number that is calling me is 828-865-5203, 08, 10, 17, 20, 30, etc.

I just received a call with the same message, but they didn't spoof the Social Security Administration phone number. I was called from 917-725-4248. I didn't answer, since I never answer calls from numbers I don't know.

Just a call from Boone, NC (828) 865-5311 They left a VM " This call is from the Department of Security administration the reason you have received this phone call from our department is to inform you that we _________ your Social Security number because we found some suspicious activity so if you want to know about this case just press one thank you ..."

I received a couple calls from (828) 865-5309, (828) 865-5312 and (828) 865-5318 on June 10, 2019 saying that my social security was suspended due to suspicious activity. I tried to called the Social Security Administration for answers but couldn't get a hold of anybody, instead the machine wants me to spelled out my social security number slowly 1 by 1 before I can speak to someone. I don't feel safe so I hung up with an unsuccessful call.

From Boone North Carolina: 828-865-5316, ...5216, ...5211, ...5202. And each time, I block the number. And a new call comes in from a new number within 20 minutes. I´m skeptical about EVERYTHING and I don have time for nonsense. I figure if something is serious enough, it´ll be put in a letter not a phone call.

I just had the same exact call. The weird part is that I was actually waiting for a call back from them! But they always replay my own name in my own voice as confirmation. So I hung up. Geez, this is just creepy and sad to do to older folks when it's tough enough to keep track of our Medicare, SSA, and insurance stuff online.

My father got a call just a few minutes ago of a pre-recordered message saying that his benefits check is in danger of being suspended. I do not recognize the phone number, but it is 18288655331. I am not sure if this is how they would tell you about a warning? We normally get letters in the mail telling us information, never a phone call.

Received 6 phone messages in 1 day from this number with the "urgency" element to reply, although the message is a bit unclear, its an obvious scam. Interesting thing is the display shows a number before the (360)-787-4888 which reads 'V611021600002'. I have no idea what that is, but of course, dont reply!

I received a call and they told me my social security card had been compromised. I told them I had no idea about it being lost or stolen. More than likely I would have noticed it was missing and would have gone to the ss ofice to have it replaced or what ever they wanted . Anyway this person asked for my ss number and when I said I was not giving that out over the phone he quickly hung up. Now I an getting email almost daily .it is simply crazy.

I just got this call from a Chicago, IL number (872) 356-0071. It was a real person's voice, though, not some weird robot-sounding voice, but it was a recording. They asked me to call them back at a different number. I didn't even bother writing it down; I was pretty certain it was a scam. Googled the number and, sure enough, it brought me here.

I've been getting calls saying my Social Security number is being blocked and they're going to send the local sheriff after me. The most recent call was from 1-800-198-6213. I pushed 1 to speak with a "Social Security Administration representative" who didn't know why I was on the phone with him. He said his name was Logan Paul (infamous American internet personality) and his call back number was 877-876-3171. I tried to ask him some more questions and he said some swear words and hung up on me.
