Earlier this month, we told you about a growing scam: people pretend to be from the Social Security Administration (SSA) and try to get your Social Security number or your money. That scam is now growing exponentially. To compare: in 2017, we heard from 3,200 people about SSA imposter scams, and those people reported losing nearly $210,000. So far THIS year: more than 35,000 people have reported the scam, and they tell us they’ve lost $10 million.

Here’s what one of those scam calls sound like:

Scammers are saying your Social Security number (SSN) has been suspended because of suspicious activity, or because it’s been involved in a crime. Sometimes, the scammer wants you to confirm your SSN to reactivate it. Sometimes, he’ll say your bank account is about to be seized – but he’ll tell you what to do to keep it safe. (Often, that involves putting your money on gift cards and giving him the codes – which, of course, means that your money is gone.)

Oh, and your caller ID often shows the real SSA phone number (1-800-772-1213) when these scammers call – but they’re faking that number. It’s not the real SSA calling.

Here's what to know:

  • Your Social Security number is not about to be suspended. You don’t have to verify your number to anyone who calls out of the blue. And your bank accounts are not about to be seized.
  • SSA will never call to threaten your benefits or tell you to wire money, send cash, or put money on gift cards. Anyone who tells you to do those things is a scammer. Every time.
  • The real SSA number is 1-800-772-1213, but scammers are putting that number in the caller ID. If you’re worried about what the caller says, hang up and call 1-800-772-1213 to speak to the real SSA. Even if the wait time is long, confirm with the real SSA before responding to one of these calls.
  • Never give any part of your Social Security number to anyone who contacts you. Or your bank account or credit card number.

If you get one of these calls, tell the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.

I received a call, but decline it . I got a voicemail almost identical to the recording on this site from number 1-888-499-9400. I ignored the voicemail, of course. Thank you for posting these things on your site to help me know what is actually going on!

They called and told me similar things, and the (Indian?) man told me a office will get to my house... the phone number I did see on my phone, was 800-919-4608 I replied, that if an official officer does know my address, then why should I give him (the man on the phone) further information like my name … he threaten me then that if I don't give my name, it's considered a crime … (After the call I blocked this number, but in the first moment it was very threatening …)

This number has called me over and over today with a voicemail like you mentioned above. This is the Department of Social security administration. I am so so tired of these scam artists trying to get money out of people. Isn't it a crime to pretend to be a Social security agent when you are not. What can we do to stop this harassment?

I received a call from Texas 956-267-5670 with a message stating that my social security number was suspected of suspicious activity and that I needed to call back right away at the number provided. When I called back the person (Victor Anderson) wanted me to verify my social security number and address. I explained to Victor that I suspected that this was a scam, that I would be notifying law enforcement of his name and number and he hung up.

I have gotten two of these robo calls. It has the actual number of the SS office on my caller ID 1-800-772-1213 They tell me that there's been fraudulent activity on my SS # (they do NOT tell me my SS #) They said my SS has been suspended, and the FBI will be investigating. They told me to press 1 for more information on how to stop further action being taken against me. It said this is their LAST attempt to reach me. I pressed 1, and nobody got online, but I was prepared to just hang up. I haven't received any (snail) mail regarding this, so I feel sure it is a scam. Every time they call, it's their "last attempt" to reach me. LOL

I just got one of those calls, and have been getting several of them from different numbers and locations. the one I just got was 309-323-9383. The man on the other end sounded foreign, kinda middle eastern. He said my ss# was being suspended for criminal activity, that a rental car had been found abandoned on the side of the road in Texas, with blood and drugs and stolen money in it. Wanted me to verify my birthdate and ss#, which, duh, I did. But I didn't give any other pertinate info. Wanted to know about my house, my car, my bank accounts.... I just told him that considering me for those kind of criminal activities was so ridiculous because I am an elderly Christian woman who would never have anything to do with those things. I scared now. He has some personal info that I shouldn't have given out. What do I do now? Never listening to those stupid calls ever again!

I keep getting calls from 888-865-**** (last four keep changing) in Boone, NC. It's an automated robot male saying that it is the SS office and my SS has been suspended. I pressed "1" to continue and ended up talking to someone telling me that my number has been involved in 25 crimes involving fraud equalling up to $10M. They asked how many bank accounts I had and that's when I hung up.

Got 3 calls today 6/5/19. After hearing the message figured it was a scam. How do you suspend a social security number? Answered the third time and was transferred to a man with a heavy Indian accent. I acted very concerned until he asked me for my social security number, at which point I said " Don't you have it in front of you? Could you read it to me first?" After not being able to give the number I informed him that social security numbers don't get suspended and the phone just went dead.

They've upped their game on the calling. At end of robot call, it now asks you to press 1 to speak to someone immediately.A foreign voice answers and says "Thank you for calling the social security administration. How may I help you today?" I replied, "I don't know, because YOU called ME." "When did you receive this call ma'am." "Just now. Robot message said dial 1, so I dialed 1." Guy goes on to ask if he is speaking to me, and butchered ny name. I laughed and said "That's close enough." He then said he didn't believe me, and wanted to know why I was harassing him?! Needless to say, while he began to argue, I told him I believed "this to be a fraudulent call and was calling the police and the SSA." He was still jabbering and said something about me being arrested and I hung up. This call came from: 1-800-834-9459 We have enough to deal with in this world...the last thing we need, is more people trying to scam us out of what little money we get.

I got a call from 1-800-210-2728 claiming to be the SSA and saying my social had been flagged for fraudulent activity. A woman with a Jamaican accent then came on the line asking for my full name and social to “verify my identity”. I can see where many elderly folks would fall victim to this scam, especially since they are so bold as to outright say they are from the Social Security Administration and to have recordings saying the same.

THE NUMBER THAT CALLED ME TODAY FEW TIMES WAS 800-193-5213. PRETENDING TO BE FROM SOCIAL SECURITY, THAT MY NUMBER WAS SUSPENDED AND I HAVE TO PRESS 1 TO SPEAK WITH AN AGENT. I DID PRESS 1, AND A MAN WITH A VERY STRONG INDIAN ACCENT WAS TRYING TO CONVINCE ME THAT THEY ARE REALLY FROM SOCIAL SECURITY. JUST TOLD HIM, IF HE WILL CALL ME AGAIN, WILL REPORT HIM AND HUNG UP. PEOPLE, BE CAREFUL, ALL THE GOVERNMENT ADMINISTRATIVE THINGS WILL SEND YOU A LETTER IN THE MAIL, NOT CALL YOU.

Just received the SSA Scam call advising that my SSN had been suspended. I remained on line to speak with the party following the recording. When a live person came on the line I was asked HOW I COULD BE HELPED. I advised that they called me and instructed them to tell me what the nature of their call was. I was then asked for my name which I gave a fake name. There was a pause and I was then asked for my SSN. I told caller she should already have that info since they claimed my SSN had been suspended and they initiated the call. She immediately hund up.
