Your Social Security number is an important key for an identity thief. Scammers want it, and they think of all sorts of ways to trick you into giving it away.

Here at the Federal Trade Commission, we’re getting reports about calls from scammers claiming to be from the Social Security Administration. They say there’s been a computer problem, and they need to confirm your Social Security number.

Other people have told us that they have come across spoof websites that look like the place where you would apply for a new Social Security card – but these websites are actually a setup to steal your personal information.

If you get a phone call or are directed to a website other than ssa.gov that is claiming to be associated with the Social Security Administration, don’t respond. It’s most likely a scam.

Here’s some tips to deal with these government imposters:

  • Don’t give the caller your information. Never give out or confirm sensitive information – like your bank account, credit card, or Social Security number – unless you know who you’re dealing with. If someone has contacted you, you can’t be sure who they are.
  • Don’t trust a name or number. Con artists use official-sounding names to make you trust them. To make their call seem legitimate, scammers use internet technology to spoof their area code – so although it may seem they are calling from Washington, DC, they could be calling from anywhere in the world.
  • Check with the Social Security Administration. The SSA has a warning about these scams and suggests you contact them directly at 1-800-772-1213 to verify the reason for the contact and the person’s identity prior to providing any information to the caller.

If you come across one of these scams, please report it to the Social Security Administration’s Fraud Hotline at 1-800-269-0271, or 1-866-501-2101(TTY), and then tell the FTC about it.

I received second call today saying my SS had been pulled because of illegal activity. I knew it was a scam because of it was second call in 3 months. They gave the same info, illegal activity use of my number. She wanted my SS# which I did not give her. She asked if our Sherriff's office contacted me the last 2 days. I told her I knew it was a scam, she kept threatening me with my card # wanting my number immediately or the police would come and arrest me. I told her go ahead, I hung up and called your office. The number they used was a local area code #828-382-1298. I called number and it said phone had no service. Thank God I still can understand this scam but what about all these old people who cannot understand? Hope this gets resolved soon.

I just received a phone call from #1-800-430-0848, wherein a woman identified herself as "Lakeisha" from "Allsup Employment Services (or something similar to that effect), but I hung up on her. Lately I've received numerous calls from people claiming to work with the Social Security Administration's Ticket To Work program-which I never signed up for. AS far as I'm concerned, these are scams, no matter what they may claim to be.

I got a call from 877 772 3794 indicating my application to the SSA was in correction. The caller was Marcus Van Hook. He was very defensive when I indicated my concerns that the call from him did not seem to follow protocols. He was trying to convince me that my application was not valid.

Got 2 calls from this number 202/953/9062 today 2/2/21. One went to voice mail and said it was the Social Security Admin. calling. The other I picked up and hung up. I think the person that owns this phone number and others making these scam calls should be liable for the $$ they scam. Plus, the name of the person should be reflected along with the carrier when that call is being made so it can easily be reported to the carrier. The phone companies are making money from these scam lines and not doing enough to protect their customers!

I have been getting calls from different numbers telling me my SSN has been put on hold because of fraudulent activity and if I did not contact them then my SSN was going to be cancelled. I know it is a scam. A good way to figure out if it is a scam or not is to hang up and try calling the number back. More than likely the number will be disconnected already, or you will get a high pitched noise on the other line and it will not go through.
