A caller says that he’s from the government and your Social Security number (SSN) has been suspended. He sounds very professional. So you should do exactly what he says to fix things…right?

Wrong.

The FTC has gotten reports about scammers trying to trick people out of their personal information by telling them that they need to “reactivate” their supposedly “suspended” SSNs. The scammers say the SSN was suspended because of some connection to fraud or other criminal activity. They say to call a number to clear it up – where they’ll ask you for personal information.

Thing is, Social Security numbers do not get suspended. This is just a variation of a government imposter scam that’s after your SSN, bank account number, or other personal information. In this variation of the scheme, the caller pretends to be protecting you from a scam while he’s trying to lure you into one.

Here are a few tips to protect yourself:

  • Never give out or confirm personal information over the phone, via email or on a website until you’ve checked out whoever is asking you for it.
  • Do not trust a name, phone number, or email address just because it seems to be connected with the government. Con artists use official-sounding names and may fake caller ID or email address information to make you trust them. Besides, the government normally contacts people by postal mail.
  • Contact government agencies directly, using telephone numbers and website addresses you know to be legitimate.

If someone has tried to steal your personal information by pretending to be from the government, report it to the FTC.

I've received numerous calls over the last week. Today alone I have received FIVE! I can't believe it. All from different numbers, all the same message. Most of the numbers begin with +1-844- for me. I just want them to move on from my number and stop harassing me-- NO, I won't be playing into your idiot scam!

I got a voicemail and the caller said I needed to contact them at 868-414-7034. He said my SSN was being suspended for suspicious activity. Right the suspicious activity was him calling me and leaving me that message. It's for a scam. I will not call him back or take any future calls of this nature. They will stop at nothing. They can call all they want. I don't return calls from numbers unfamiliar to me.

Today, 7/25/19 I have been bombarded by calls from the following numbers which come through with a United States caller ID attached to them. I let them all go to voicemail and they are all recordings stating my social security number has been suspended due to suspected fraudulent activity and to press 1. The calls have come every hour since just before 9 am...it is now just before 1 pm! They have come from (212) 244-1907; (895) 652-8475; (895) 050-2494 and (878) 896-7085. I block them only to get a call from a different number. I'm hoping they'll get tired of me and move on to the next victim tomorrow.

I got 2 in the last week. The number that is calling me is 800.511.9257. I knew it was a scam as soon as it said criminal activity, then "social benefits". However, I am glad there are these boards that we can post and tell the numbers to warn others. I think of the poor and the elderly who will be tricked from this and lose money and it breaks my heart. I don't understand how people can use their brains to come up with such elaborate schemes, instead they could just tweek it a little to be generous and look what could be accomplished!
