Earlier this month, we told you about a growing scam: people pretend to be from the Social Security Administration (SSA) and try to get your Social Security number or your money. That scam is now growing exponentially. To compare: in 2017, we heard from 3,200 people about SSA imposter scams, and those people reported losing nearly $210,000. So far THIS year: more than 35,000 people have reported the scam, and they tell us they’ve lost $10 million.

Here’s what one of those scam calls sound like:

Scammers are saying your Social Security number (SSN) has been suspended because of suspicious activity, or because it’s been involved in a crime. Sometimes, the scammer wants you to confirm your SSN to reactivate it. Sometimes, he’ll say your bank account is about to be seized – but he’ll tell you what to do to keep it safe. (Often, that involves putting your money on gift cards and giving him the codes – which, of course, means that your money is gone.)

Oh, and your caller ID often shows the real SSA phone number (1-800-772-1213) when these scammers call – but they’re faking that number. It’s not the real SSA calling.

Here's what to know:

  • Your Social Security number is not about to be suspended. You don’t have to verify your number to anyone who calls out of the blue. And your bank accounts are not about to be seized.
  • SSA will never call to threaten your benefits or tell you to wire money, send cash, or put money on gift cards. Anyone who tells you to do those things is a scammer. Every time.
  • The real SSA number is 1-800-772-1213, but scammers are putting that number in the caller ID. If you’re worried about what the caller says, hang up and call 1-800-772-1213 to speak to the real SSA. Even if the wait time is long, confirm with the real SSA before responding to one of these calls.
  • Never give any part of your Social Security number to anyone who contacts you. Or your bank account or credit card number.

If you get one of these calls, tell the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.

Just received a call from 610-888-1954 with a pre-recorded message similar to the one posted. I pressed one in an attempt to speak with a person and informed them this is a scam and I will be turning them in. All he could get out is "Ma'am.." before I continued and said the United States doesn't suspend social security numbers, so it's a scam operation and they're being turned in. They promptly hung up.

Received a call today from 800-996-4547. The man stated that my social security card was compromised and needed to verify my id otherwise I would suffer penalties. He asked for my name, address & social #. I asked him for his name and he said David Spade. Lol, I laughed and said interesting, he's an actor. I also asked him where his office was located that he was calling from and he stated 3600 Security Ave. He hung up on me because I refused to answer his questions and continued to ask him my own questions.

I was called with the following number 1-713-908-4054. I am ignoring the call (of course) and will continue to do so. I just wanted to ensure I put the fake number out there for the rest of the caller victims. Reminder: People young and old get scammed - TALK ABOUT IT - Tell people that it is fake. Tell your family - Tell your old aunt Mable... remind her it is okay to ignore these things and never give your information out over the phone to anyone unless you know them.

I was called this morning with a prerecorded message that they were calling me from social security to advise me there was unusual activity with my social security number. I asked why I had not been notified by mail and they said can you provide me with your name and social and I’ll check and at that point I said no because I was going to go to social security office to get more information. The number they called from was 888-280-5851. I called social security and they verified it was a scam call.

I just got a call and it wasn't the Social Security toll free number. The number is 586-486-6458 with a female robo voice and saying that my SS# was used in a fraudulent crime and to call the number back to avoid getting arrested or going to court. I blocked the number and will report this. Actually the first I have heard about these scams but I used to work for the website for USA.gov. DON'T GIVE THESE PEOPLE YOUR SS# AND DON'T GIVE THEM ANY MONEY. The government would send you a letter in the mail.

I know it is a scam. I have received the robo call a hand full of times over the past couple of years. However, today they called four times throughout the day all from the same number (14108740361), each time leaving the same voicemail. --That I am wrongly urged to contact the ssd before an arrest warrant is issued in my name due to suspicious activity under my ssn.--

I am glad I found this thread because I’m getting the same recorded message about every other week from supposedly the SS administration. Usually it’s a 210 # but recently it was a 646 #. Therefore San Antonio or NY. The messages are identical and non-threatening however. Just an automated voice that says: “This call is from Social Security administration number to reach department is 646-992-8922 I repeat it's 646-992-8922 thank you…” I am not yet even receiving benefits so cannot imagine why I’m on their list. I’m tempted to report these numbers but the SSA form used for this is ridiculously long!
