Earlier this month, we told you about a growing scam: people pretend to be from the Social Security Administration (SSA) and try to get your Social Security number or your money. That scam is now growing exponentially. To compare: in 2017, we heard from 3,200 people about SSA imposter scams, and those people reported losing nearly $210,000. So far THIS year: more than 35,000 people have reported the scam, and they tell us they’ve lost $10 million.

Here’s what one of those scam calls sound like:

Scammers are saying your Social Security number (SSN) has been suspended because of suspicious activity, or because it’s been involved in a crime. Sometimes, the scammer wants you to confirm your SSN to reactivate it. Sometimes, he’ll say your bank account is about to be seized – but he’ll tell you what to do to keep it safe. (Often, that involves putting your money on gift cards and giving him the codes – which, of course, means that your money is gone.)

Oh, and your caller ID often shows the real SSA phone number (1-800-772-1213) when these scammers call – but they’re faking that number. It’s not the real SSA calling.

Here's what to know:

  • Your Social Security number is not about to be suspended. You don’t have to verify your number to anyone who calls out of the blue. And your bank accounts are not about to be seized.
  • SSA will never call to threaten your benefits or tell you to wire money, send cash, or put money on gift cards. Anyone who tells you to do those things is a scammer. Every time.
  • The real SSA number is 1-800-772-1213, but scammers are putting that number in the caller ID. If you’re worried about what the caller says, hang up and call 1-800-772-1213 to speak to the real SSA. Even if the wait time is long, confirm with the real SSA before responding to one of these calls.
  • Never give any part of your Social Security number to anyone who contacts you. Or your bank account or credit card number.

If you get one of these calls, tell the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.

I get these calls about 2-3 times a week. It's very frustrating. Just got a call about 30 minutes ago from 1 539-430-0687. Caller ID says Account Services. I didn't recognize the number so I sent it to voicemail. The automated message said it was SSA and that they received a call from the Federal Crime and Investigation Department and that my SS# was about to be suspended and under investigation and to call to speak to the lead investigator Freaked me out, but figured it was a scam.

So, I have read the posts from other SS scam calls and I need to add a new one. I just received a call today (11/4/19) from this number 1-800-776-0237. Its an automated call just like the others and sounds EXACTLY like the others. However, my message was a little different. I was told there was fraud activity on my SS number and to hear more about it, I needed to press the number 1. I did NOT press the number instead, I hung up. Please be careful and do NOT fall for this attempt to gain your information.

I was called like this and told the usual about a car rented with my SSN found with drugs and blood in it. I played along for almost 20 minutes and then asked the "agent" to recite the Pledge of Allegiance. He got so mad at me and started insulting my late mother.

Sandy
November 05, 2019
The latest SCAM is a call from 1-614-927-1750 (from Columbus Ohio) stating to call this number immediately as your SS# has come under review due to serious federal crimes. Needless to say if you call back it is answer by someone with a foreign accent who hangs up the minute you ask for a gov. ID or provides a false one. Be warned that they do have caller ID (most scammers do) and know who you are. Don't play games with these folks, many are hackers who can and will access data. DONT ANSWER THE PHONE, Block the number and simply let it go DO NOT CALL BACK.

November 05, 2019
DO not answer calls from 1-614-027-1750 it is a scam they are not social security. The threat is the federal gov has criminal charges against you. Do not call back, do not respond. These are individuals have no morals, they will steal identity do not play games with them.

I recieved a voicemail yesterday from a man with a strong Indian accent. He stated that there is suspicious activity with my SSN and that I must speak to the "officer." Whatever I did I was not to hang up. It sounded like he hung up then answered the phobe: "Social Security Administration how can I help you. " At that point you could hear alot of other people speaking in Indian and laughing and answeribg other phones claiming to be Social Security Administration. SSA does not make calls to advise of such matters. I worked closely with them for 17 years. They dont have the manpower to investigate such claims.

First I'd like to suggest that Social Security sends letters to 'everyone' how to safely answer their phones and get utilities and such to stop asking for social security number, schools should give warnings to all ages about phone safety. Do not answer any questions using the word yes. This can be recorded and used in scams. Do not agree or disagree if they state any personal information, even 1 question answered gives them a bit of your personal info. Add an identifying name to any phone calls you are positive are legit, like medical , family, friends and stop answering the numbers you don't recognize, never, ever, ever call back numbers you do not know. This tells them someone is there and your number gets added to more lists of scammers. If you answer and get threats or warnings, do not stress over them, just research the number online, or call the official place they claim to be. I rarely get any phone calls, if I see a number calling without a name I added, I do not answer it. If I make a call that might involve them returning it, I add info to it. My phone is not listed under Do Not Call List. I never text back unknowns, even if there is a hint it connects to my life. I will call directly to the institution mentioned. When you renew your drivers license or picture ID, request that they do not share your name or any other info, yes they do this, I can tell by the name on junk mail that's delivered. Your phone, cable, internet and some other services also sell your info, ask for a paper to sign denying that does not give them permission, or ask them for something showing they do not sell or share info. Most months I get zero scam calls, I get 1-3 rarely in a month but don't answer. (:

The scam also shows up as the following phone number: 1-800-576-2191. The recorded call asks you to dial 1 on your phone to be connected with someone who will help, and if you don't, the recording states that you will permanently lose your social security benefits. Also, that displayed phone number is a spoofed number. When you google that number, it shows up as the corporate headquarters for Kroger.

I Have gotten numerous calls from SS 1800-996-5764 and a Thomas Eppenber stating my SS has been suspended and I need to call immediately because of fraudulent activities to the # 209-920-4355. If this is fraud and we are being bombarded with these automated messages, why isn't SS putting something out in the news, billboards, talkshow, etc.? Why aren't our elected officials doing something about this? These people are persistent in their calling and sound very convincing. How many people have to get scammed before something is seriously done about this?
