Earlier this month, we told you about a growing scam: people pretend to be from the Social Security Administration (SSA) and try to get your Social Security number or your money. That scam is now growing exponentially. To compare: in 2017, we heard from 3,200 people about SSA imposter scams, and those people reported losing nearly $210,000. So far THIS year: more than 35,000 people have reported the scam, and they tell us they’ve lost $10 million.

Here’s what one of those scam calls sound like:

Scammers are saying your Social Security number (SSN) has been suspended because of suspicious activity, or because it’s been involved in a crime. Sometimes, the scammer wants you to confirm your SSN to reactivate it. Sometimes, he’ll say your bank account is about to be seized – but he’ll tell you what to do to keep it safe. (Often, that involves putting your money on gift cards and giving him the codes – which, of course, means that your money is gone.)

Oh, and your caller ID often shows the real SSA phone number (1-800-772-1213) when these scammers call – but they’re faking that number. It’s not the real SSA calling.

Here's what to know:

  • Your Social Security number is not about to be suspended. You don’t have to verify your number to anyone who calls out of the blue. And your bank accounts are not about to be seized.
  • SSA will never call to threaten your benefits or tell you to wire money, send cash, or put money on gift cards. Anyone who tells you to do those things is a scammer. Every time.
  • The real SSA number is 1-800-772-1213, but scammers are putting that number in the caller ID. If you’re worried about what the caller says, hang up and call 1-800-772-1213 to speak to the real SSA. Even if the wait time is long, confirm with the real SSA before responding to one of these calls.
  • Never give any part of your Social Security number to anyone who contacts you. Or your bank account or credit card number.

If you get one of these calls, tell the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.

Something to add. It's good to get these numbers out so people know to ignore them. But keep in mind unless they use a real organization's phone number. You will never be able to call back after they hang up. They are computer generated numbers that they delete as they hang up on you. That's why so many different ones. They have macros that just pump these numbers out all day long. The computer is even the one making the calls. All they do is sit around and wait for you to hit 1. Most are recorded so that if they do get any info they have your voice conforming a yes or no and can okay transactions using such recordings.

I just received a call from Eric Huncer from the "SS Admin" @ 469.202.6896, my batch number is 70854. Apparently my SS# has been used to open 9 CC#'s and 15 Bank accounts totaling $1.3 Million in fraudulent changes. This was all discovered when they found a stolen car on the Southern Border of Texas. Really, $1.3 Million? If my credit is worthy of those kinds of charges, I'm heading to the Lambo dealership after work. The give away was how fast they transferred my call to the top when I told them I had $400k in savings. That number may be closer to about $4. Enjoy your Friday Scam calls!

I received a call from 1 (800) 921-3854. It was an automated voice that threatened to freeze my social security, which is odd because I am not yet receiving benefits from SSA. I was instructed to press one to speak to a representative, and when I did, a male voice said something I didn't understand and then they hung up. The number now shows up as out of service, Creepy!

Received a call/voicemail on my cell # today from 469-625-2900 (McKinney, TX). Similar to other commenters, the message stated that the number for me to call the SSA and the reason for the call was “there’s a legal enforcement action filed on your Social Security number for fraudulent activity so before this matter goes to the state courthouse and before you get arrested if you have need any information or have any question kindly call us back at 469-625-2900. Thank you.”

1(325) 576-6028 Hamlin,TX Called back after a missed call. They keep changing their number, and since I have my number linked to my company I can't just not answer. That being said, the person had a heavy accent and I had to fight to get him to tell me who he worked for. Answer Social Security Administration. Wanted me to confirm my name and zip code. Both of which he had since I refused to answer while getting which company he supposedly worked for. Called back after a missed call.
