Earlier this month, we told you about a growing scam: people pretend to be from the Social Security Administration (SSA) and try to get your Social Security number or your money. That scam is now growing exponentially. To compare: in 2017, we heard from 3,200 people about SSA imposter scams, and those people reported losing nearly $210,000. So far THIS year: more than 35,000 people have reported the scam, and they tell us they’ve lost $10 million.

Here’s what one of those scam calls sound like:

Scammers are saying your Social Security number (SSN) has been suspended because of suspicious activity, or because it’s been involved in a crime. Sometimes, the scammer wants you to confirm your SSN to reactivate it. Sometimes, he’ll say your bank account is about to be seized – but he’ll tell you what to do to keep it safe. (Often, that involves putting your money on gift cards and giving him the codes – which, of course, means that your money is gone.)

Oh, and your caller ID often shows the real SSA phone number (1-800-772-1213) when these scammers call – but they’re faking that number. It’s not the real SSA calling.

Here's what to know:

  • Your Social Security number is not about to be suspended. You don’t have to verify your number to anyone who calls out of the blue. And your bank accounts are not about to be seized.
  • SSA will never call to threaten your benefits or tell you to wire money, send cash, or put money on gift cards. Anyone who tells you to do those things is a scammer. Every time.
  • The real SSA number is 1-800-772-1213, but scammers are putting that number in the caller ID. If you’re worried about what the caller says, hang up and call 1-800-772-1213 to speak to the real SSA. Even if the wait time is long, confirm with the real SSA before responding to one of these calls.
  • Never give any part of your Social Security number to anyone who contacts you. Or your bank account or credit card number.

If you get one of these calls, tell the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.

Got 2 calls (I didn't answer) and 2 voicemails from 469-436-2353 on my cell phone (which I didn't answer because I don't recognize the number). The voice messages were left about 2 hours apart, and I called back on that number, it rang once, nobody answered and the line went silent. I reported them to FTC. Here is the text of the voicemails: "as soon as possible as SSA has filed a lawsuit against your name. The local county sheriffs are going to arrest you for 4 serious allegations before this matter goes to the courthouse and we freeze your bank accounts and suspend your social security number and get you arrested. For more information regarding this case you can get back to us at 469-436-2353 I repeat 469-436-2353. Make sure you give us a call us back before you get arrested"

The 504-226-0257 number texted me today to query if I was someone in my family by name. I replies with asking who are you and what company do you represent ? No reply. Searched 504 area code and assumed a prank call. They got no info from me ! They need to be shut down for disturbing me and other citizens.

I'm having this problem too. They are even texting family members asking if their number is my number. It's from a different number every time. Have you had any further issues with this or found out who it is?

We have been receiving many of these scam robocalls saying legal action regarding SS# without any specific detail and that need to speak to us ASAP. Just got a call like this today from #800-935-9712. This has been going on for quite a few years. It had stopped and calmed down for several months, but started again over a year ago. They are all robocalls and the messages each time may not sound exactly the same with some different detail. I will not call them back and refuse to answer and talk to these clowns.

I’ve received voicemails the last two days saying that there is a compliance officer wanting to serve me with papers for fraud regarding my social security or I’m going to be arrested. Don’t believe them. The caller ID says Unknown Caller but the phone number they said to call back was 855-513-9073. DON’T GET SCAMMED. NEVER CALL BACK OR ANSWER THEIR CALLS AND IF YOU DO ANSWER, DON’T GIVE THEM ANY INFO AT ALL. DON’T CONFIRM YOUR NAME OR ANYTHING.

Just received a call registered Caller Id: (562) 907-4127. I didn't answer the call and returned the call on a land line but a recorded message said that number was no longer available.... and that I must call the Whittier, CA Social Security Office at (866) 336-2187 and was prompting me to press #1 on my dial pad, which I did not and hung up. At that moment I suspected this call was a scam and I did not call the number provided.

I just got this call. I really wanted to answer and 'tease' them into oblivion ! But I did not . I simply recorded their number and then came to Google to check it. It would have done my heart good to just tease them by acting as if it were a perfectly good call ... but I did restrain myself !!!!!

I did not call them back.

Received a call from (844) 200-9093 Social Security Scam, picked up and received an automated recording stating that my social security was being cancelled due to some sort of activity. Waited till end of message to see if there was a "press # to be removed from list" but no such luck.

I received a call but didn't answer. They left a voicemail with an automated message saying I was involved in a money laundering scheme and if I didn't respond then there would be a default judgement of fraud. The message then prompted me to press 1 to speak to a social security officer. The number they called from is 1-800-392-5416. I knew it was fraud because no legitimate agency would disclose facts about an ongoing investigation through a voicemail.
