Earlier this month, we told you about a growing scam: people pretend to be from the Social Security Administration (SSA) and try to get your Social Security number or your money. That scam is now growing exponentially. To compare: in 2017, we heard from 3,200 people about SSA imposter scams, and those people reported losing nearly $210,000. So far THIS year: more than 35,000 people have reported the scam, and they tell us they’ve lost $10 million.

Here’s what one of those scam calls sound like:

Scammers are saying your Social Security number (SSN) has been suspended because of suspicious activity, or because it’s been involved in a crime. Sometimes, the scammer wants you to confirm your SSN to reactivate it. Sometimes, he’ll say your bank account is about to be seized – but he’ll tell you what to do to keep it safe. (Often, that involves putting your money on gift cards and giving him the codes – which, of course, means that your money is gone.)

Oh, and your caller ID often shows the real SSA phone number (1-800-772-1213) when these scammers call – but they’re faking that number. It’s not the real SSA calling.

Here's what to know:

  • Your Social Security number is not about to be suspended. You don’t have to verify your number to anyone who calls out of the blue. And your bank accounts are not about to be seized.
  • SSA will never call to threaten your benefits or tell you to wire money, send cash, or put money on gift cards. Anyone who tells you to do those things is a scammer. Every time.
  • The real SSA number is 1-800-772-1213, but scammers are putting that number in the caller ID. If you’re worried about what the caller says, hang up and call 1-800-772-1213 to speak to the real SSA. Even if the wait time is long, confirm with the real SSA before responding to one of these calls.
  • Never give any part of your Social Security number to anyone who contacts you. Or your bank account or credit card number.

If you get one of these calls, tell the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.

I just received a similar Social Security scam robocall from 512-548-0620. My answering machine recorded the last part of the message. It said something about my social security number and told me to press 1 to be connected to their officer. And then repeated the instructions to press 1. I blocked the number but they’ll probably call back with a different number.

I received two missed calls from these 1800 numbers and each time it was all different numbers after the 1 800. First it was a recorded voice saying my social will be suspended for suspicious activity it sounded very real which I thought it was and then asked to press one to speak with an associate from social security headquarters. A young man who sounded Hispanic began telling me how my social was being used in Texas under 15 bank accounts and they found a car on the side of the road in my name. I was totally confused and in shock and could not believe what I was hearing. The mans phone call sounded so real it even had the people talking in the background as if he was really at the headquarters office so it sounded real he asked for my last 4 digits of my social, first and last name, zip code I told him I have absolutely nothing to do with that ! And I only have one bank account with pnc this is where it gets weird but I somewhat didn’t think too much of it in the moment because I was still trying to process all what I was being told even asking is this real ! He asked how much did I have in my account and was it checkings or savings in my head I’m like “why does that even matter????” He asked if I was employed I told him no and he sounded very disappointed after that..To end the story he said someone from 911 will call me and hung up abruptly! I’m like what ? I was so confused but let me just say this the God I serve is so Good! that imposter piece of scum who had nothing better to do will get his day ! He cannot do anything with the little information he got out of me God will not allow it !!! Please be careful everyone. I’m a 26 yr old female and this was first time dealing with something like this and I was totally unaware somebody was trying to scam me in that moment it’s so terrible for ppl to do that to someone but like I said tried ! The enemy cannot and will not Win ! I wrote this message so others can be aware ! If you get a call like the one I just explained please please hang up ! And make sure you notify your bank and call the social security administration!

I get calls all the time and I have RoboKiller app. Someone asked what the name of the app is and it’s as stated RoboKiller app. They have pre-recorded messages so you basically scam the scammer. Here’s my take on all this. 1. Don’t ever answer the calls. If someone is legitimately calling you they will leave you a message if you don’t recognize the caller ID. 2. Social Security has no connection to ever “Suspend” your social security number. That’s ridiculous to even think about, social security numbers are provided to all citizens as a way of identifying you legally and keeping your wages and taxes under that number. It would never ever be suspended. 3. If you listen close to the recordings they don’t make any sense. One of mine I get says “ we have your social security insurance number or your social insurance number... see what I mean. There’s no such thing as social insurance number. They change the words around trying to make you think it’s about your social security. 4. No government agency is ever going to call and threaten you saying judgment, warrant, court case, legal matter, etc, however they word it, the government will never call you to tell you they have a case against you and if you don’t call back that they will arrest you. The only agency that can issue warrants or indictments is the actual police and mostly Sherrif’s office. They will serve you papers IN PERSON, not threaten you over the phone. Now there are always exceptions perhaps you did forget to pay that parking ticket or worse then yes you may receive a call from the police department but it’s going to be something you ARE aware of. Most indictments are mailed to the individual. 5. No one except a court of law, in a court of law with again something you will already know about but no one else can ever have you arrested for a judgment or a collection or debt of any kind. That’s not to say that bill collectors won’t call you too and they could be legitimately calling you (again you should be aware), but they themselves have zero ability or authority to have a warrant issued or to have you arrested. The only way that’s possible is through law enforcement. I hope that helps. I get these stupid calls all the time and they are very threatening and scary. I understand why so many people fall to the scammers, they have very stern, illegal attempts to get you on the phone and either rob you of your money or scam/steal your identity. I’m sorry to all the folks that have been victimized by these criminals. It’s beyond ridiculous that there’s nothing that can be done, but they fantom the phone number they are calling from. And YES it shows the IRS or SSA is calling but they are not who is really calling you. If they are showing up as a legitimate caller ID, go ahead let the call go to voice mail and call the number right back. If it truly was the IRS or SSA calling you trust me they will never ask for your info and never ever ask you for money, they will leave a voice mail with you and when you call back it will be legit if it truly was those organizations. If you call the number back and it’s not the actual IRS or SSA you’ll know right away, just don’t say anything at all until you can be guaranteed it is legitimate. Be wise, Be smart, don’t give your info out. Recheck numbers before calling back and when you do call the actual agency back they are going to tell you they didn’t call you. Ps, if not already mentioned, I know this was mostly about social security but just from years of experience, Bill Collectors cannot and do not have any authority or power to issue a warrant or place a judgment on you, be careful everyone!!!

I never answer my phone unless I know who is calling. I'm sick of junk calls and fraudsters. If a call is important, they can leave a voice message. Yesterday I received the following identical ROBOCALL voicemail message, FOUR TIMES from 4 different phone numbers (which Vonage provided): (The first word in the message was truncated. There were at least 2 grammar errors - that's the first clue.) Here are the phone numbers from the caller and a verbatim transcript of the message. 512-156-0744, 8:55 am, October 21, 2019 469-912-8314, 12:07 pm, October 21, 2019 469-874-4588, 3:54 pm, October 21, 2019 858-779-2351, 2:03 pm, October 21, 2019 "-partment The reason of [sic] this message is to inform you that the STATE DEPARTMENT is filing lawsuit against you an arrest -ward has been released on your name due to legal enforcement actions by your social security number for fraudulent activities. To get more information about this case file from [sic] federal database press 1 and speak to our officer now. I repeat press 1 to resolve your case now."

I just got this call...telling me that I have at least 25 accounts in Texas and my SSN was suspended. Those 25 accounts were wrapped up with money laundering, both domestic and internationally- in excess of $10 million. If I had all of these accounts even with a fraud alert on my SSN...how would all of this be possible? When I called the lady out about the scam, she asked me why I was talking to her like that. If my SSN needed to be suspended, I hope they'll be giving me a new SSN because my credit sucks!!!

My phone auto-flagged this as Spam but a VM was left. I just wanted to post a new number to help anybody else: "The reason you have received this phone call from our department is to inform you that there's a legal enforcement actions filed on your social security number for fraudulent activities. So when you get this message kindly call back at the earliest possible on our number before we begin with the legal proceedings, that is 561-526-8367. I repeat 561-526-8367. Thank you."

I'll tell him my name is Amos Quito. Stay safe, y'all.

Received this voicemail twice within 30 minutes before noon today. I’m blocking the number. What I’d like to know, is why the amount of scam type calls increased when I had to go onto SSDI because of MS and then the calls seemed to double when I joined Medicare 3 years later. Why is that? Is there a list of us somewhere that these scammers use because they think people on SS & Medicare are easy targets?

Hello. I am not revealing my name, as I have been contacted by some automated robot caller that claimed that the Social Security Administration was having an issue with my account. The number in question is 1-360-639-5383. I also have been contacted by some more scammers previously with the numbers 1-831-000-5897, 1-866-246-6453, 1-650-253-0000, 1-612-419-2420, 1-612-338-6568, 1-651-501-9621, 1-612-547-0748, and 1-952-374-7017. The thing is that I have already registered with the National Do Not Call Registry, and yet all of these spam numbers, as well as alleged wrong numbers, seem to keep targeting my smartphone number. Please get them to stop. Thank you.

I started receiving these SS# calls since on 07/12/3019 (rec'd 5 separated calls from 5 diff ph#s: 12:16pm -(866)438-4056 1:20pm (866)424-8838 2:14pm (866)840-4560 2:30pm (866)040-6851 4:13pm (888)936750 (not even complete ph#!) All these original calls only stated that "some suspicious activity found under my SS#" but the messages have now gotten more agressive.. most recent call rec'd 10/18/19 3:36pm (800)142-6456 messages have now esculated to "to avoid legal consequences need to contact them etc... press 1 to connect" Apprently my 73 yr old mother us also receiving these harassing messages. Luckily she's suspicious of everyone & won't give her personal info to any stranger but this is really ridiculous that these ppl haven't been stopped & they can continue to harass ppl for months & months. I really don't understand why our government doesn't seem to think that innocent ppl getting scammed out of their hard earned money isn't a big enough issue to do anything to stop it! Hell, maybe its because the government is the one behind these calls!
