Earlier this month, we told you about a growing scam: people pretend to be from the Social Security Administration (SSA) and try to get your Social Security number or your money. That scam is now growing exponentially. To compare: in 2017, we heard from 3,200 people about SSA imposter scams, and those people reported losing nearly $210,000. So far THIS year: more than 35,000 people have reported the scam, and they tell us they’ve lost $10 million.

Here’s what one of those scam calls sound like:

Scammers are saying your Social Security number (SSN) has been suspended because of suspicious activity, or because it’s been involved in a crime. Sometimes, the scammer wants you to confirm your SSN to reactivate it. Sometimes, he’ll say your bank account is about to be seized – but he’ll tell you what to do to keep it safe. (Often, that involves putting your money on gift cards and giving him the codes – which, of course, means that your money is gone.)

Oh, and your caller ID often shows the real SSA phone number (1-800-772-1213) when these scammers call – but they’re faking that number. It’s not the real SSA calling.

Here's what to know:

  • Your Social Security number is not about to be suspended. You don’t have to verify your number to anyone who calls out of the blue. And your bank accounts are not about to be seized.
  • SSA will never call to threaten your benefits or tell you to wire money, send cash, or put money on gift cards. Anyone who tells you to do those things is a scammer. Every time.
  • The real SSA number is 1-800-772-1213, but scammers are putting that number in the caller ID. If you’re worried about what the caller says, hang up and call 1-800-772-1213 to speak to the real SSA. Even if the wait time is long, confirm with the real SSA before responding to one of these calls.
  • Never give any part of your Social Security number to anyone who contacts you. Or your bank account or credit card number.

If you get one of these calls, tell the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.

Why don't we have any protection from our telephone provider on incoming calls, the provider of the scammer placing the outgoing call, or our government? Why can we only receive real calls from real originators and people abusing the system lose their telephone privileges FOVERVER!

I'd love to know who thought it was a good idea to enable telephone equipment to generate fake telephone numbers, such that the Caller ID System would display those fake numbers instead of the real number!

Anyone calling for anything that is considered "sensitive data" or personal sensitive information... is a hoax, criminal scammer. No government or private agency will call to notify you that you are in some kind of violation or trouble. EVERY GENUINE AGENCY WILL PUT THIS KIND OF CONTACT IN WRITING - THEY HAVE TO. IF A GOVERNMENT AGENCY OR BUSINESS IS GOING TO COLLECT OR PROSECUTE THEY HAVE TO HAVE A PAPER TRAIL TO DO SO. Remember - any call for social security, your Apple phone or computer, anything needing a password, any such call is a criminal hoax.

Got a call from 229-798-4809 (real number you can call). They are running the Social Security Scam. You call them and they answer the phone as "Social Security" and if you are if they are a Social Security Administration employee they say "yes". This is a felony as they are impersonating Federal employees. I guess that nobody cares that they prey on the old people and I wonder who is making money from selling phone service to a felon without anyone trying to protect citizens from fraud. The ONLY solution given the circumstances is to waste the scammer's time. Only if everyone makes them waste 20 seconds each time they call, they will have to shut down their "business"

So far in the month of December 2019 I've received four different phone calls claiming that they are from the Social Security office. All of them have been pre-recorded statements that I'm in some sort of violation of the law and must call a specific number or I will be arrested. I know this is a scam and I hang up everytime I hear it.
