Earlier this month, we told you about a growing scam: people pretend to be from the Social Security Administration (SSA) and try to get your Social Security number or your money. That scam is now growing exponentially. To compare: in 2017, we heard from 3,200 people about SSA imposter scams, and those people reported losing nearly $210,000. So far THIS year: more than 35,000 people have reported the scam, and they tell us they’ve lost $10 million.

Here’s what one of those scam calls sound like:

Scammers are saying your Social Security number (SSN) has been suspended because of suspicious activity, or because it’s been involved in a crime. Sometimes, the scammer wants you to confirm your SSN to reactivate it. Sometimes, he’ll say your bank account is about to be seized – but he’ll tell you what to do to keep it safe. (Often, that involves putting your money on gift cards and giving him the codes – which, of course, means that your money is gone.)

Oh, and your caller ID often shows the real SSA phone number (1-800-772-1213) when these scammers call – but they’re faking that number. It’s not the real SSA calling.

Here's what to know:

  • Your Social Security number is not about to be suspended. You don’t have to verify your number to anyone who calls out of the blue. And your bank accounts are not about to be seized.
  • SSA will never call to threaten your benefits or tell you to wire money, send cash, or put money on gift cards. Anyone who tells you to do those things is a scammer. Every time.
  • The real SSA number is 1-800-772-1213, but scammers are putting that number in the caller ID. If you’re worried about what the caller says, hang up and call 1-800-772-1213 to speak to the real SSA. Even if the wait time is long, confirm with the real SSA before responding to one of these calls.
  • Never give any part of your Social Security number to anyone who contacts you. Or your bank account or credit card number.

If you get one of these calls, tell the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.

Received a voicemail saying to call this number 1-800 305-7701 and the voicemail I connected to called the company: Paramount. But I hung up instead of leaving a message. The initial voicemail left to me was about a skip trace and urgent I call the number. It came from a city near me.

On 12/10/19, I was contacted by a number registered as"Flushing Police/(718) 321-2250" and then was transferred to a person who reported they were an agent with the Social Security Administration he noted his name as Kevin Morgan and Federal ID #LR0827. For over an hour he explained that my SSN was compromised and was taken by two men in TX who rented a car that was recently confiscated with drugs. He reported that he was assisting me with staying out of the criminal investigation. When I expressed concern that this might a scam he had a person who impersonated a federal agent from "Schuyler County" call me to threaten me by saying if I do not proceed with protecting my accounts they would proceed with a Federal Investigation against me (her name was Attorney General Christine Maxwell). He advised that within the hour my SSN would be switched to protect my accounts and identity and that they needed to protect my checking and savings account by having me wire funds directly to the US Treasury where it will be held temporarily then transferred back to me with my new SSN. I pushed back and said that I would like to meet with someone in person about this and he pushed back by saying that the Federal Agents will proceed with their suit against me if I do not comply as I would be considered an accomplice. Additionally,he said federal agents would be meeting with me at my home tomorrow morning. Additionally he told me to download an app called Viber where they could send me messages. Ultimately, I double checked this website and learned that others had expreienced this I confronted him saying that all of his statements were listed in concerns others had presented and he needed to do his research before scamming people. He abruptly ended the call and they ceased to communicate via text the Viber. I called Flushing Detectives who confirmed that this was a scam. They suggested I call Equifax/TransUnion/Experian and file a fraud alert. I will also be walking into my bank later to create an alert. This is shameful that this happens to people and it is saddening to know what they are able to get away with. Wishing everyone the best.

Received a call 800-928-8205 saying that my SSN was deactivated due to criminal activity. Asked me to press 1 for more info. I pressed 1. The guy asked how he could help, I said "You called me." He asked if I got a recording saying my SSN was deactivated. I said, "yes". He asked for my first and last name. I said I could provide my phone number and he could verify my first and last name. He said he could only look me up by name, I asked if this was a "scam". He said, "This is not a scam", and hung up on me.

I keep getting scam calls. Today, moments ago I got a call from 313-723-2834. I took the call because I'm tired of this. The caller said, "I'm calling about your call to Social Security. Hi, I'm Stephanie." I stopped her then and there. I said, "I didn't call and you're a scam! I'm reporting you!"

My caller ID said 800-889-7623, and a professional sounding message was played saying my SSN was going to be revoked, so I instantly knew it was a scam. Just to mess with them, I pressed 1, and someone with a possibly Indian English accent told me they had caught me money laundering. So I asked them to verify my name. He tried not to, but finally called me "Miss Charlotte", and said I used many others. I was so amused I started taunting him a bit. He tried sticking with the scam, but he finally said "That's it, I'm suspending your SSN, and the FBI will be arresting you soon", and then hung up on me.

I received a call today and my phone automatically blocks scam callers but when I saw the location Washington, DC and I had lost my SS card I fell for it. He sounded like an Indian because of the accent. He asked for my SS number and I was hesitant and they said it was serious and raised his voice and told me I was on a recorded line and the FBI was listening then they said my number was being used for money and drug laundering. He gave my a claim number and a warranty number and said his name was Officer Erick Henderson. They asked me about what bank account I have and how much money I have in my checking and I told him I couldn't check because I wasn't able to log into my account and they immediately hung up thats when I knew I was scammed. The number they used was 202-217-4993

Receiving numerous calls saying fraud activity on social security. The most recent are saying that the activity is on the Southern boarder of Texas. My guess trying to spark fear about illegal immigration using your info. Big fraud. It is strange that we did not receive these calls until a week after my wife applied for social security retirement benefits. Sounds like someone on inside selling info or they are hacked.

I don't even think the gvmnt has a mechanism to suspend your SSN. If they did, they would send an official notification in the mail - not over the phone and not a robocall. I got the call, had a good laugh, HUNG UP immediately. The scammers are depending on that initial shock - the gotcha, the deer in the headlights moment, you panic! That is how I immediately knew that it was a fraud, that gut feeling. There are people all over the world looking to get your money - they damn sure ain't getting mine, not if I can help it!
