Earlier this month, we told you about a growing scam: people pretend to be from the Social Security Administration (SSA) and try to get your Social Security number or your money. That scam is now growing exponentially. To compare: in 2017, we heard from 3,200 people about SSA imposter scams, and those people reported losing nearly $210,000. So far THIS year: more than 35,000 people have reported the scam, and they tell us they’ve lost $10 million.

Here’s what one of those scam calls sound like:

Scammers are saying your Social Security number (SSN) has been suspended because of suspicious activity, or because it’s been involved in a crime. Sometimes, the scammer wants you to confirm your SSN to reactivate it. Sometimes, he’ll say your bank account is about to be seized – but he’ll tell you what to do to keep it safe. (Often, that involves putting your money on gift cards and giving him the codes – which, of course, means that your money is gone.)

Oh, and your caller ID often shows the real SSA phone number (1-800-772-1213) when these scammers call – but they’re faking that number. It’s not the real SSA calling.

Here's what to know:

  • Your Social Security number is not about to be suspended. You don’t have to verify your number to anyone who calls out of the blue. And your bank accounts are not about to be seized.
  • SSA will never call to threaten your benefits or tell you to wire money, send cash, or put money on gift cards. Anyone who tells you to do those things is a scammer. Every time.
  • The real SSA number is 1-800-772-1213, but scammers are putting that number in the caller ID. If you’re worried about what the caller says, hang up and call 1-800-772-1213 to speak to the real SSA. Even if the wait time is long, confirm with the real SSA before responding to one of these calls.
  • Never give any part of your Social Security number to anyone who contacts you. Or your bank account or credit card number.

If you get one of these calls, tell the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.

Message was female robot voice saying "Did you call the SSA back is 480-781-0155. The reason you have received this phone call is to inform you that there's a legal enforcement action filed on your social security number for fraudulent activity so before this matter goes to the state court house and before you get arrested if you have any questions." When I called that number back from a different phone, someone answered immediately and said "Social Security this is agent Tom Crucifer how can I help you." Did not give any info.

Scammers won’t give up. I received a social security voice recording that the law enforcement will remove my social security #. I know that the social security will not call me. I called him back and I asked him what is going on. Why did you sent me that weird message. He pretended that I not to know. He said,” it’s his personal phone that he had for years. I said,” your company quit calling me. His said there is no company. I think I caught him off guard. He is foreign scammer. I told him. I will wait for the law enforcement here at my home.

On November 26, I received four calls. Three calls from 1-800-701-1422 and one from 1-800-1455. According to the caller an arrest warrant has been issued due some illegal activity where my social security number was used. I returned one of the calls just to see what the heck the call was concerning. I don't remember the callers name, but I did block the numbers. After he finished explaining, I frankly told him that if had all of my information that he could come and get me. I haven't had a call since November and hope not to receive another. But in case I do, I'll be sure to get a name

I received a call from the ssa telling me that there was bad activity on my account. I was then asked to verify my birth date, and ss# so they could help me with the problem. I said since you are with the government the ss administration already has this information. I asked him to tell me what my ss# and my birthday because that was how they determined my benefits He got angry and then threatened to have me arrested by the FBI I told him to please do just that. He then cursed at me for wasting his time I told him thank you for confirming he was a bad scammer and hung up.

December 03, 2019
If I feel like answering, I usually say something totally off the wall, like ask questions, as if I'm with a dating service. Usually get a quick hang up afterwards. I also sometimes when I see a number I don't recognize, I either hit the button or pick up the receiver as if to answer the call, however, don't say anything and put it on mute until it ends. Once you say, "hello", they know the number is connected to a person. If it goes to a voice message, same thing. It really is horrible that you can block the number a thousand times, only for it to come from a completely different number.

I have received four calls in the last two days. from 1800-009-4579. Last one left a voice mail message indicating my SS account had been suspended and to connect to SS adminstrative office by pressing one. Repeated the request to press"one" three times. Warned if did not respond my SS benefits would be blocked permanently. Ridiculous. Can't believe anyone falls for this.

S.S.A. Scammers have called 4 times in the last two days. They call from: 888-640-1750 or 713-255-9693 -or - 866-318-0603 caller ID labels it '800 service'. The IRS will NEVER call you on the phone. Dont let these calls scare you into giving them anything. Just hang up and dont listen. I was getting these calls all the time. I called the IRS to verify and they told me that they will only contact anyone through a registered letter that you have to sign for. Dont talk to them, the longer they can keep you on the phone the more information they can get about you. Just hang up and dont let them scare you.

I just got one of those calls on my cell and the # showing on CID was 667-300-6169. Of course the person wanted me to verify info so I gave them a bogus name and ZIP code. They told me that they "were going to verify it" and call back and hung up. Now, if I call their # back, they immediately hang up. Bunch of jerks and sound like English is definitely NOT their first language.
