Earlier this month, we told you about a growing scam: people pretend to be from the Social Security Administration (SSA) and try to get your Social Security number or your money. That scam is now growing exponentially. To compare: in 2017, we heard from 3,200 people about SSA imposter scams, and those people reported losing nearly $210,000. So far THIS year: more than 35,000 people have reported the scam, and they tell us they’ve lost $10 million.

Here’s what one of those scam calls sound like:

Scammers are saying your Social Security number (SSN) has been suspended because of suspicious activity, or because it’s been involved in a crime. Sometimes, the scammer wants you to confirm your SSN to reactivate it. Sometimes, he’ll say your bank account is about to be seized – but he’ll tell you what to do to keep it safe. (Often, that involves putting your money on gift cards and giving him the codes – which, of course, means that your money is gone.)

Oh, and your caller ID often shows the real SSA phone number (1-800-772-1213) when these scammers call – but they’re faking that number. It’s not the real SSA calling.

Here's what to know:

  • Your Social Security number is not about to be suspended. You don’t have to verify your number to anyone who calls out of the blue. And your bank accounts are not about to be seized.
  • SSA will never call to threaten your benefits or tell you to wire money, send cash, or put money on gift cards. Anyone who tells you to do those things is a scammer. Every time.
  • The real SSA number is 1-800-772-1213, but scammers are putting that number in the caller ID. If you’re worried about what the caller says, hang up and call 1-800-772-1213 to speak to the real SSA. Even if the wait time is long, confirm with the real SSA before responding to one of these calls.
  • Never give any part of your Social Security number to anyone who contacts you. Or your bank account or credit card number.

If you get one of these calls, tell the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.

+1 800 304 3199 +1 800 045 6668 +1 800 528 9522 I got a phone call from all of them. I did not answer on the first one at all, and then number dissapiered from my phone which means that the number does not existed or got deleted. They sent me a vocie mail about SSN, and how it will get canceled if I do not call them back. I did a research and I realised what is it about. They called me from the second phone number the next day with automatic voice message saying to press 1 if I want to speak to someone who is in the charge of it. I did not. And today, they reached out from the first phone number, I clicked 1, it rang once and no one said anything. I waited quitely for a minute and then said Hello, and the person with a British accent talked to me. I asked what is my name if they know that my SSN is canceled, and the said that is not his place to tell me MY name. I told them they they are a scam, and that this procedure is not done by phone call. He started cussing me out and hang up on me.

In just 5 hours today, 1/16/2020, these numbers have called my boyfriend, Ty's, home number 7 times. His grandmother as well as himself was worried they had really done something. It's scary. I answered the last time, and remembered they had called my cell. After about a minute on the phone with "GARY" he quickly hung the phone up. We can see how they get you though, because it sounds legitimate and professional. Some of the numbers include 800-439-5545; 800-016-6964; 800-407-7820. If these numbers contact you, be prepared, be aware. Hope this helps someone

+8001625584 I got a call from this number talking about fraudulent activities, saying they were going to file a lawsuit. They're calling from a number my plan does not allow so I can't talk to their "representative" anyway. Thank God I couldn't, I didn't even know the scammers got this advanced.

It's unbelievable the amount of SPAMs I have received over the last few months. I am certainly annoyed and angry and, in my opinion, phone company/ies should be able to filter fake entities/persons and stop assigning numbers to be used in SCAMS! ASAP!

How can these scams be stopped? I get several daily - the caller i.d. is never the same phone # but the message is usually the same. I never pick up the 'phone as advised to do "immediately and press one. . ." I'm in Washington State - I see by reading Comments here that the SCAM is geographically widespread.

I have received over 5 calls today, leaving 4 voice mails; and once I answered the call thinking it was someone I knew. The numbers varied from 270 area code, Kentucky to a 518 area code which I've never seen. I suspected this was fraudulent when it is a digital type of voice. But, it is annoying that they've called back to back several times.

Just received a call from 866-579-1967 stating that my SSN was being suspended based upon the fact that my SSN and name was used in Texas to rent a car that was found abandoned in Texas and that during a search of the car, drug were discovered which gave them probable cause to search my home. That during said search, more drugs were found. That upon their further investigation, it was found that I had a number of bank accounts that are used to Launder money and a number of homes rented in Texas under my name. I was laughing all the time during this call. When I asked the caller which Branch of the Government he was with, He said "Don't worry, I work for the Government", upon hearing that, I informed the caller that I also work for the United States Government and am in fact a US Marshall with the US Marshals Service-Tactical Operations Division. Upon hearing that, the Caller hung up. I tried calling the Number back but it was a recording that kept saying this number is not in service.
