Earlier this month, we told you about a growing scam: people pretend to be from the Social Security Administration (SSA) and try to get your Social Security number or your money. That scam is now growing exponentially. To compare: in 2017, we heard from 3,200 people about SSA imposter scams, and those people reported losing nearly $210,000. So far THIS year: more than 35,000 people have reported the scam, and they tell us they’ve lost $10 million.

Here’s what one of those scam calls sound like:

Scammers are saying your Social Security number (SSN) has been suspended because of suspicious activity, or because it’s been involved in a crime. Sometimes, the scammer wants you to confirm your SSN to reactivate it. Sometimes, he’ll say your bank account is about to be seized – but he’ll tell you what to do to keep it safe. (Often, that involves putting your money on gift cards and giving him the codes – which, of course, means that your money is gone.)

Oh, and your caller ID often shows the real SSA phone number (1-800-772-1213) when these scammers call – but they’re faking that number. It’s not the real SSA calling.

Here's what to know:

  • Your Social Security number is not about to be suspended. You don’t have to verify your number to anyone who calls out of the blue. And your bank accounts are not about to be seized.
  • SSA will never call to threaten your benefits or tell you to wire money, send cash, or put money on gift cards. Anyone who tells you to do those things is a scammer. Every time.
  • The real SSA number is 1-800-772-1213, but scammers are putting that number in the caller ID. If you’re worried about what the caller says, hang up and call 1-800-772-1213 to speak to the real SSA. Even if the wait time is long, confirm with the real SSA before responding to one of these calls.
  • Never give any part of your Social Security number to anyone who contacts you. Or your bank account or credit card number.

If you get one of these calls, tell the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.

I just received a call but wasn’t able to get to the phone, so the voicemail says that some legal enforcement was filed in regards with my SSN for criminal activities under section 18 and that before this matter goes to Federal Court House or before I get arrested I need to call immediately to the toll free number 18338442773. So I’d like to know if this is also considered one of those scam phone calls???!!

I keep getting called from Soc Sec Admin 301-722-5175. A computerized voice says charges are being filed against me fro fraudulent use of my social security number and I must press 1 to speak with an account representative now. I did press 1 one of the times and a man answered 'Social Security" so I angrily said 'What do you want? Stop calling us!' and he said 'Oh!' and hung up. I finally blocked the number!

I just got a call from 213-984-4589, I was unable to answer since I was on a conference call at work. They left a message, robotic, saying they were from the Social Security Administration and I needed to immediately call them back. Phone number 213-984-4589. I have had these scammers call me a million times before. I have never provided my information. They try to scare you by saying they are sending the FBI and police to arrest me and throw me in jail for not providing my information and not cooperating with them. I've said that I'll wait patiently outside with them. Then they hung up.

1-877-201-9792 is another number I was contacted with. They threatened legal and physically todo harm if I did not comply with their request. I reported their threats and claim to be SSA. It was a male and then a female involved in call . They claimed a fraud case was being issued and needed all my personal information to sort out fraud and investigation was gonna have to be paid for by me. I refused then the threats started. Terrible people.

"Have A Blessed Day"
January 28, 2020
2020, FridayJan 24 and Monday Jan 27 I've been getting multiple, impressively persistent calls from a Minnesota number for consecutive business days (they took the weekend off!), with the same recorded female robotic voice message. Amusingly, while the content of the message is very serious and businesslike, at the end I'm pretty sure the script says to "have a blessed day." I'm just impressed that they're maintaining a consistency in the callback number over a period of days! FWIW the originating, and stated callback number is (320) 287-5296.
