Earlier this month, we told you about a growing scam: people pretend to be from the Social Security Administration (SSA) and try to get your Social Security number or your money. That scam is now growing exponentially. To compare: in 2017, we heard from 3,200 people about SSA imposter scams, and those people reported losing nearly $210,000. So far THIS year: more than 35,000 people have reported the scam, and they tell us they’ve lost $10 million.

Here’s what one of those scam calls sound like:

Scammers are saying your Social Security number (SSN) has been suspended because of suspicious activity, or because it’s been involved in a crime. Sometimes, the scammer wants you to confirm your SSN to reactivate it. Sometimes, he’ll say your bank account is about to be seized – but he’ll tell you what to do to keep it safe. (Often, that involves putting your money on gift cards and giving him the codes – which, of course, means that your money is gone.)

Oh, and your caller ID often shows the real SSA phone number (1-800-772-1213) when these scammers call – but they’re faking that number. It’s not the real SSA calling.

Here's what to know:

  • Your Social Security number is not about to be suspended. You don’t have to verify your number to anyone who calls out of the blue. And your bank accounts are not about to be seized.
  • SSA will never call to threaten your benefits or tell you to wire money, send cash, or put money on gift cards. Anyone who tells you to do those things is a scammer. Every time.
  • The real SSA number is 1-800-772-1213, but scammers are putting that number in the caller ID. If you’re worried about what the caller says, hang up and call 1-800-772-1213 to speak to the real SSA. Even if the wait time is long, confirm with the real SSA before responding to one of these calls.
  • Never give any part of your Social Security number to anyone who contacts you. Or your bank account or credit card number.

If you get one of these calls, tell the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.

Just received this phone call today from (607)515-1870 with the SS spill. Of course, I hung up. Then an hour later, they called again from (607) 107-2430. Didn't answer. I wish it was a real person on their end so I could blow a whistle into the phone to rattle their eardrum!

I just received a phone call from 800-550-4576. They said an arrest warrant had been issued. Asked me to transfer to someone else so I did to play along. Woman gave me a badge #852775, then asked what she could do for me. I said I don't know, you called me. She then asked for my name, I said you called me why do you not know my name? I then explained I would not give any information over the phone and she hung up. Will these people ever give up???

This is so helpful!! I got a call exactly like the recording with a woman telling me that my social will be suspended because it was used in illegal activity. The woman said to press 1 to speak to a officer immediately. Now I didn’t press 1, I hung up thinking it was a scam. But after several calls and voicemails that the same number left I had enough and called them back, this time they transferred me to a “agent” and when he asked me how may he help me I explained what was going on and before I could even finish what I was saying he hung up. I had a lot of confusion if this was real and serious or if it was a scam and this really helped. Thanks!

My mom just received a call from 1-800-705-9983 and the guy told her that her social security number is about to be suspended. She said a few choice words to him and hung up on him. The really sad thing is that these scammers are NEVER caught and there are people who fall for this scam and other scams. I know, because my identity was stolen approximately 5 years ago and I am still trying to dig out of it.

They are using a female voice now. Please don’t fall for these. These people have no scruples and they rather steal from good people rather than getting a real job. I put blame on their own governments for not doing ANYTHING on catching them. Even our own federal government is just crossing their arms. There is no monetary incentive or nothing to gain, so they wont do much.

(302)-250-4973 - 7 Calls from Delaware I received 6 phone calls from this number with 5 robot voicemails. They said similar stuff, but they actually didn't mentioned anything threatening like that I would be arrested or that I owed money. I finally picked up on the 6th time (I was asleep for the other 5) and I was brought to our old friend, Jeffrey Brown. He told me that someone took my SSN, rented out a car, and got busted with several bags of cocaine in El Paso, TX. I told him that I don't even have a driver's license and that I don't know anyone in that area. I'm pretty sure this stumped him, because he tried to end the call quickly by saying that he would wire me to the DEA office and they would handle the rest. He said it would take 5-10 minutes to get the call. I waited for awhile, fell back asleep, 8 hours later as I'm typing this, no call was ever made. I got another call from the same number they originally spammed me with, and I called them back to check if everything is ok. I think he recognised my voice, because he immediately hung up. Luckily, I never gave out any important info, aside from which city I live in. This is the first time I ever had to deal with something like this and it was pretty interesting, to say the least.

Someone called yesterday, first from a number that when I called back had a human voice mail, then approximately each hour throughout the day til about 5 pm, robo calls came in from the same area code , but with different numbers, claiming to be from SSA with a threatening message to me. Those numbers, upon call back, went nowhere and it said "Verizon"..."call cannot be completed" or something like that. The strange thing is that there has been a death in the family in that area code about a month ago. My dear sibling died. I have NEVER in my ENTIRE LIFE received calls from that area code unless it was family. It is not a metropolitan area. It is a rather rural area. Then yesterday, a month after my sibling's death, I get a call from that area from a human and then several robo calls from the same area code but each time I blocked a number, it would change. Same area code...different number. Those calls kept coming until about 5 PM.
