Earlier this month, we told you about a growing scam: people pretend to be from the Social Security Administration (SSA) and try to get your Social Security number or your money. That scam is now growing exponentially. To compare: in 2017, we heard from 3,200 people about SSA imposter scams, and those people reported losing nearly $210,000. So far THIS year: more than 35,000 people have reported the scam, and they tell us they’ve lost $10 million.

Here’s what one of those scam calls sound like:

Scammers are saying your Social Security number (SSN) has been suspended because of suspicious activity, or because it’s been involved in a crime. Sometimes, the scammer wants you to confirm your SSN to reactivate it. Sometimes, he’ll say your bank account is about to be seized – but he’ll tell you what to do to keep it safe. (Often, that involves putting your money on gift cards and giving him the codes – which, of course, means that your money is gone.)

Oh, and your caller ID often shows the real SSA phone number (1-800-772-1213) when these scammers call – but they’re faking that number. It’s not the real SSA calling.

Here's what to know:

  • Your Social Security number is not about to be suspended. You don’t have to verify your number to anyone who calls out of the blue. And your bank accounts are not about to be seized.
  • SSA will never call to threaten your benefits or tell you to wire money, send cash, or put money on gift cards. Anyone who tells you to do those things is a scammer. Every time.
  • The real SSA number is 1-800-772-1213, but scammers are putting that number in the caller ID. If you’re worried about what the caller says, hang up and call 1-800-772-1213 to speak to the real SSA. Even if the wait time is long, confirm with the real SSA before responding to one of these calls.
  • Never give any part of your Social Security number to anyone who contacts you. Or your bank account or credit card number.

If you get one of these calls, tell the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.

Voicemail message left. Extremely time sensitive. The number for you to call the SSA back is 706-986-0846. The reason you have received this phone call from our department is to inform you that there's a legal enforcement action filed on your social security number for fraudulent activity so before this matter goes to the state court house and before you get arrested if you need any information or have any question kindly call us back at 706-986-0846. Thank you."

Just received a call about 10 mins ago saying “your social security is temporally suspended and all your social benefits will be suspended until further notice. Please stay on the line while we connect you to a personal information specialist” I’m in Texas and the number I was called from was 1-800-554-8798. You are able to call the phone number back but it sounds just like the scam call they have as an example!

I received three calls this morning, all robo calls. The first, according to my caller ID came from Vietnam? The next 2 an 844 number, all three same message. Social Security Administration, suspicious activity, suspending my card and to push 1. Seriously! With all our technology why can these calls be detected? My concern are for those receiving Social Security getting one of these calls could be devastating.

Just got a call from 800 105 9674 telling me that my SS # was used fraudulently near the Mex. border— and to dial “1” for further information. I did, and a man with an Indian accent asked for my name and address. Luckily I thought this didn’t seem right, and said that I will call the SS office in the morning— he then hung up. I tried to call the number back just to see who would answer, and Verizon cannot connect me to this number. But this really scared me — I am a senior ! They even gave a name of a SS employee, but I don’t remember that name .

I've had a number call me saying ssa department is filing a lawsuit against me and that they have a arrest warrant for me and I am freaking out because I'm not sure if it is real or not. It was a robotic voice and also a phone call so I am not sure if it is real. As far as I know of I have not received any letters saying anything but not sure if it was misplaced by someone if there was one. Is it possible for ssa department to call and file lawsuit against you?

No. It's not. And the SSA also has no power to issue arrest warrants. First, if there was any question about your number being used fraudulently or criminally, they would call you in person, not by robo call, and they would ask for you by name. They would inform you about the situation, politely, because they know people can easily be a victim of identity theft. This is important: they won't ask you what your name is, they will address you immediately by your name. Never reply to a robo call. The best thing you can do is hang up the phone, turn the phone off for an hour while you look up the real SSA number in your paperwork or on the internet, and then phone the office and tell them about the call you received. They will tell you the same thing that everyone on the forum is saying: this is a scam.

I received 3 VMs this week (2in one day) from Waynestown,IN ‭(765) 234-8741‬. Always an automated recording that had half the message cutoff. But the gist was that I needed to call back and speak with a federal agent before my SSN was suspended. I called and spoke with a man with an Indian accent who sounded like he was in a call center. He identified himself as from a security company. Told me there was suspicious activity using my SSN, and said they also sent me an email. I challenged him that I would’ve received something in the mail from the Social Security Administration rather than via automated VM or email (which I never got). I refused to give him the last 4 of my SSN when asked to verify. He told me abruptly that I could deal with the SSA myself then. I heard a high pitched squelching noise as he ended the call.

I received 5 calls (from different numbers) on July 20 - finally answered the last. Knew it was a scam but wanted to find out their ploy. Apparently my social security number was compromised and I had a warrant out for my arrest. Couldn't understand the "officer" so finally hung up. Successfully blocked all five numbers on my phone, but alas, they constantly change the caller ID...

My SS# was actually compromised last year. But the SS Administration didn't call me. They sent a letter with instructions to contact Experian and the other credit agencies. So when I received this call today, I assumed it was fake because the SSA does not call you.
