Earlier this month, we told you about a growing scam: people pretend to be from the Social Security Administration (SSA) and try to get your Social Security number or your money. That scam is now growing exponentially. To compare: in 2017, we heard from 3,200 people about SSA imposter scams, and those people reported losing nearly $210,000. So far THIS year: more than 35,000 people have reported the scam, and they tell us they’ve lost $10 million.

Here’s what one of those scam calls sound like:

Scammers are saying your Social Security number (SSN) has been suspended because of suspicious activity, or because it’s been involved in a crime. Sometimes, the scammer wants you to confirm your SSN to reactivate it. Sometimes, he’ll say your bank account is about to be seized – but he’ll tell you what to do to keep it safe. (Often, that involves putting your money on gift cards and giving him the codes – which, of course, means that your money is gone.)

Oh, and your caller ID often shows the real SSA phone number (1-800-772-1213) when these scammers call – but they’re faking that number. It’s not the real SSA calling.

Here's what to know:

  • Your Social Security number is not about to be suspended. You don’t have to verify your number to anyone who calls out of the blue. And your bank accounts are not about to be seized.
  • SSA will never call to threaten your benefits or tell you to wire money, send cash, or put money on gift cards. Anyone who tells you to do those things is a scammer. Every time.
  • The real SSA number is 1-800-772-1213, but scammers are putting that number in the caller ID. If you’re worried about what the caller says, hang up and call 1-800-772-1213 to speak to the real SSA. Even if the wait time is long, confirm with the real SSA before responding to one of these calls.
  • Never give any part of your Social Security number to anyone who contacts you. Or your bank account or credit card number.

If you get one of these calls, tell the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.

They have called me twice today so far from "Private Number". Which means no way to block them or report them. I took my house off the market and am now on some sort of telemarketing list. I have had nearly 20 calls from realtors as well today. I also use Zillow.

Two calls this past 7/22/19 and 7/23/19 with the same tone and similar message, yet the number comes from Hasbrouck, NJ from phone numbers: 201-754-1797 @4:12 PST and 201-754-1049 @1:39 PST. I blocked the second number and got a call just from the xxx1797 number. The first time I had to listen and told the rep. who sounded with an Indian accent that SS never calls and sent letters so is he calling. Never identifies himself and keeps saying is from the SS office. I literally told him that its a scam and he hung up.

I have received a number of social security related scam calls today. The transcription reads as follows: "So if you want to know about this case just press one. Thank you this call is from the Department of Social Security administration. The reason you have received this phone call from our department is to inform you that we just suspend your Social Security number because we found some suspicious activity. So if you want to know about this case just press one. Thank you." From the following numbers on caller ID 315-401-333 315-401-250 315-401-053 315-401-713 315-401-459 I have filed complaints with the FTC and update it continuously with new call numbers as I receive them. I work in the antivirus community and if there was more I could do to help eliminate these scammers for causing problems for people, I would be happy to do so.

I have received a call everyday this week before 9:00 am my time. All 1-800 numbers different one each day because I put a block on any number I can't call back on landline! I never pick a number I don't know. ----------- left blank federal database to speak with agent press one for further information . This is new that they are leaving a voice message though. Its a automated call saying hello this is a pre-recorded message form Social Security administration legal department the reason for this message is to inform you that ----blank assess apartment is filing a lawsuit against you and a arrest warrant has been released on your name due to legal enforcement actions filed on your Social Security number for fraudulent activities to get more information about the case file and arrest warrant from the federal database to speak with the agent press one for further information Is a very robotic sounding message as well. Its irritating that they keep calling on different numbers everyday with the threat of arrest warrant! If that was the case I think they would have found me by now!!

I was called from 888-983-6752 and was asked to return a call because my ssn# has been used in illegal activities in Texas. They claimed to be from . The Social Security Administration in San Antonio, TX. The threatened to take legal actions and suspend my ssn#, send my case to FBI, etc. They said they only can disclose what kind of illegal activities are referred to in my case if I verify with them my DOB and ssn#. Obviously, I did not give them any info and sent also an email to Social Security Administration about the incident. This is in addition to last week similar incident.
