Probably not. At least, not from the real SSA. But how many of you have gotten calls from someone who said they were the Social Security Administration? And maybe showed the real SSA phone number (1-800-772-1213) or a number close to it on your caller ID? Lots, right?

We’ve seen a spike in the number of people reporting those fake SSA calls to us. Since January 2018, we’ve gotten more than 63,000 reports of this scam. Three percent of those people reported a loss – and they lost $16.6 million (with a median loss of $1,484).

You can hear what the scam sounds like here. The caller usually says your Social Security number (SSN) has been suspended because of suspicious activity, or because it’s been involved in a crime. Sometimes, the scammer wants you to confirm your SSN to reactivate it. Sometimes, he says your bank account is about to be seized – but if you go put your money on gift cards and then give him the codes, SSA can help keep it safe. (Of course, you never want to do that, because then your money is just gone.)

To report this scam, go to ftc.gov/complaint. But if you already gave one of these callers your SSN and you're worried about identity theft, visit IdentityTheft.gov/ssa. And if you get one of these calls, remember:

  • Your Social Security number is not about to be suspended. Your bank account is not about to be seized.
  • The real SSA will never call to threaten your benefits or tell you to wire money, send cash, or put money on gift cards.
  • You can’t believe the numbers on your caller ID. Scammers can easily fake those. But if you’re worried, call the real SSA at 1-800-772-1213. You can trust that number if you dial it yourself – just not on your caller ID.
  • Never give your SSN, credit card or bank account number to anyone who contacts you. Ever.

To hear more from the honest-to-goodness SSA and the FTC about these scams, follow the Facebook Live at noon tomorrow on the SSA’s Facebook page.

Same thing happened to me today. An 800 number called me three times within 10 minutes, and I answered the last time. An automated women's voice began telling me my SSN has been suspended, and that legal action was going to be taken against me if I didn't dial "1" . The numbers they called me from are listed below: 1 800-705-6192 1 800-984-9542 1 800-382-5760

I, and everyone I know, are being inundated with calls from various phone numbers claiming that my SS # has been compensated, and instructing me to "call the arresting officer blah blah blah blah...." I keep blocking the phone numbers but it only seems to get worse. Now, I sometimes get 2-3 of these calls/day. Can't SOMETHING be done about this?

I started receiving calls that seem like spam, since I don't expect government agencies to call me directly. The recorded voice and message is not the same as the example shown here. The number that is being used is 520.208.6931. Would like to know if there are others receiving this call. Thanks!

I received an email message from ATMC (supposedly) saying my account was overdue and would be cancelled. The email had an attachment and two links. I opened none of them. I drove to ATMC on Whiteville road with a copy of the email, and they said, "Oh yeah, that's a scam." They hads copies of the email on the desk. They didn't say they were doing anything about it. I called the sheriff's office office to report it but no one called me back. I hope the public will be alerted so no one has their computer infected by clicking on links or otherwise taking this email seriously.

Three times today! I answered, and asked them to verify they were from SSA, by giving me my SSN ? (for security reasons she was not permitted to do so) My address? (Again security). My name ? (didn’t know who they called, it just got transferred to their desk) But if I didn’t follow her instructions, (given with a thick, almost impossible to understand) federal marshals would be dispatched immediately. I asked who they were going to arrest? or where they were going to go? She stammered. I told her (lying) she could find me at the federal building downtown, in the federal marshals office, where I work. Funny thing, we were disconnected.

I keep receiving calls from Bishop, TX and another place in TX phone # 409--904-0630 saying they are from Social Security and it is urgent I call them back. They keep calling non-stop. I called back after I knew it was past SS hours. They answer Social Security Administration. When they asked how may they help me. I said you called me, so you tell me. They hung up. The next day they called from a different number. I told them they were not Social Security and to stop calling this number or I was going to report them to Social Security and I hung up before they could say anything. Hopefully, they will stop calling.
