Probably not. At least, not from the real SSA. But how many of you have gotten calls from someone who said they were the Social Security Administration? And maybe showed the real SSA phone number (1-800-772-1213) or a number close to it on your caller ID? Lots, right?

We’ve seen a spike in the number of people reporting those fake SSA calls to us. Since January 2018, we’ve gotten more than 63,000 reports of this scam. Three percent of those people reported a loss – and they lost $16.6 million (with a median loss of $1,484).

You can hear what the scam sounds like here. The caller usually says your Social Security number (SSN) has been suspended because of suspicious activity, or because it’s been involved in a crime. Sometimes, the scammer wants you to confirm your SSN to reactivate it. Sometimes, he says your bank account is about to be seized – but if you go put your money on gift cards and then give him the codes, SSA can help keep it safe. (Of course, you never want to do that, because then your money is just gone.)

To report this scam, go to ftc.gov/complaint. But if you already gave one of these callers your SSN and you're worried about identity theft, visit IdentityTheft.gov/ssa. And if you get one of these calls, remember:

  • Your Social Security number is not about to be suspended. Your bank account is not about to be seized.
  • The real SSA will never call to threaten your benefits or tell you to wire money, send cash, or put money on gift cards.
  • You can’t believe the numbers on your caller ID. Scammers can easily fake those. But if you’re worried, call the real SSA at 1-800-772-1213. You can trust that number if you dial it yourself – just not on your caller ID.
  • Never give your SSN, credit card or bank account number to anyone who contacts you. Ever.

To hear more from the honest-to-goodness SSA and the FTC about these scams, follow the Facebook Live at noon tomorrow on the SSA’s Facebook page.

Please add 1 718-323-1284 in New York to the other scam numbers. They called twice yesterday and left a "recorded" voice mail. They called on my cell phone. I hope there is a way to tract these people down for prosecution.

I have gotten 19 of these calls in the last 6 hours. All of them are the same. I finally decided to call them back. He hung up on me 3 times, but finally answered on the 4th try and started singing. I began to argue with him. He then threatened to bomb my house. I laughed and told him he had no idea where I lived. Turns out, they had one of my addresses. I did not share a single piece of information with them, so how did they know one of my full addresses?

endless series of calls from 833-328-2773; 315-284-5147; 315-284-5241... "must phone asap". Every time the number is added to the "auto reject list" they try a different number. I'm pretty sure SSA knows how to mail letters.

I have a list of about 15 or so 855 area code scam calls from "social security" and I always block each number. Sometimes the same number still gets through so I block it again. I've been around since FDR was President so I know that Social Security will contact people in writing, not by phone. I've notified the FTC about these calls and their procedures don't work at all. We need to have a real task force of FTC, DOJ and FBI agents to identify and arrest these criminals and shut down their operations. Since a lot of these lies and threats are made to senior citizens living on small fixed incomes, any criminal convicted of these threats needs to be sentenced to enhanced prison time. An extra 5, 10 or 20 years in each case would be a good starting point, I believe. Lock 'em up!!!

This morning I got a call this morning from this number 410-934-6431 and the person said that his name is John Parker with badge# 987 and I was told by him with a foreign accent and also I can hear in the background of a static sound stating to me that my benefits were canceled due to my ss# being connected to a vehicle that I have never owned was in my name and that it was reported that the vehicle was located in El Paso, Texas and that drugs were found and he was aware of my address in which he literally said what it was (which is creepy) he also said that to officers were coming to my house tomorrow and that my they were cancelling my last 4 digits of my ss# and giving me new ones. He also gave me a warrant Id# as well and an Id # of this case? Once departing from this dreadful call I then immediately called SS and informed them of this call and the lady I spoke to said that it was a fraud, she was very helpful and she advised me of what I should do next , I took the advise , but I want to express my feelings and I to am frustrated like everyone else that has made a comment and its a shame in this day and time that we are living in that we pretty much have to figure out more ways on how to protect ourselves from cons from either stealing our identity or make the attempt to just to satisfy their needs but no one is safe , I notice that a lot of you are receiving calls from your landline? Well I'm received this call on my cell phone which is the only line that I chose to have. If there so many complaints in a year of different types of scammers there something that should be done in a faster pace since this is becoming a new norm unfortunately.

I just got a call from 800-926-3950, telling me my SSN was suspended because there was legal enforcement action taken against my SSN because it was involved in a crime. I knew this was a scam, so I just listened and hung up when they did. I hope people are not still uninformed enough to participate in these scams. This cycle is never-ending and is only going to get worse as technology advances. Best of luck to everyone. :-\

I received a suspicious phone call from (562) 537-8307 L.A. today shortly after making a balance enquiry. Female said hello followed shortly by recorded message of 0% Mastercard credit card. Been receiving 5-6 per day for the last 3 weeks. It's harassing. When asked, they told me they're from the Social Security Administration office in Austin, TX. I don't understand why or how they can get away with impersonating the government and take advantage of people too naïve to question the authenticity of the contact. Why can't someone do something about this?

3 phone calls today 844-728-5334 saying they are from SSA and my social security number has been stolen and suspended what ever they said. Three Calls in one day do they never give up plus I got a call to donate to the wounded warriors club for disabled veterans. I am making ends meet my self I can't afford a scam or to give money to someone I don't know. We are a business so we dont get on the do not call list we dont want our customers to not be able to call incase their number comes up as a do not call number. So frustrating. and most of the time if you call back the number it is not a working number. wish they could crack down more on them.
