Probably not. At least, not from the real SSA. But how many of you have gotten calls from someone who said they were the Social Security Administration? And maybe showed the real SSA phone number (1-800-772-1213) or a number close to it on your caller ID? Lots, right?

We’ve seen a spike in the number of people reporting those fake SSA calls to us. Since January 2018, we’ve gotten more than 63,000 reports of this scam. Three percent of those people reported a loss – and they lost $16.6 million (with a median loss of $1,484).

You can hear what the scam sounds like here. The caller usually says your Social Security number (SSN) has been suspended because of suspicious activity, or because it’s been involved in a crime. Sometimes, the scammer wants you to confirm your SSN to reactivate it. Sometimes, he says your bank account is about to be seized – but if you go put your money on gift cards and then give him the codes, SSA can help keep it safe. (Of course, you never want to do that, because then your money is just gone.)

To report this scam, go to ftc.gov/complaint. But if you already gave one of these callers your SSN and you're worried about identity theft, visit IdentityTheft.gov/ssa. And if you get one of these calls, remember:

  • Your Social Security number is not about to be suspended. Your bank account is not about to be seized.
  • The real SSA will never call to threaten your benefits or tell you to wire money, send cash, or put money on gift cards.
  • You can’t believe the numbers on your caller ID. Scammers can easily fake those. But if you’re worried, call the real SSA at 1-800-772-1213. You can trust that number if you dial it yourself – just not on your caller ID.
  • Never give your SSN, credit card or bank account number to anyone who contacts you. Ever.

To hear more from the honest-to-goodness SSA and the FTC about these scams, follow the Facebook Live at noon tomorrow on the SSA’s Facebook page.

Call today from Roseau, Dominica, saying someone had used my SSN in a fraudulent event and I should "press 1 to speak with an officer." Right, the US SSA calling from a foreign country!

Just got a call from this number 207 558 8880 claiming to be from the Social Security Administration. The robo call says that there is a warrant for my arrest and my ssn is part of a criminal fraud scheme and I am part of a criminal investigation. I filed two complaints and would like the company making these spurious claims to e held accountable.

I have received multiple calls in one day from Phone Number 234-980-1037, from Alliance OH even leaving messages that it is the SSA calling. I called them back and of course they wanted me to verify my SSA number, which I did not. They say my SSA number has been used in criminal activities including money laundering and they need to check out all my transactions. I am not dumb enough to fall for this.

I get multiple calls a week (sometimes multiple calls a day) from random numbers all over the US. Sometimes there are voicemails left and sometimes there aren’t. Lately if a message is left, it usually states that my SS has been suspended. At other times, I’ve received voicemail stating I had a warrant out for my arrest 6,000 miles away!!! These calls are a nuisance and these losers should get real damn jobs.

I get these calls every day. I am so fed up with them. I work nights and sleep during the day and they continually disrupt my sleep. Don't tell me to shut my ringer off on my phone. My parents are elderly,I have kids and grandkids. I simply cannot do that nor should I have to. Do I need to get into an accident driving or get hurt at work from being sleep deprived? Where are my rights in this? This is ridiculous and so out control. People are going to get hurt. Does anyone even care??? So far today I have received 5 calls from them from these numbers: 817-789-6273 TX 817-786-9254 TX 917-382-4178 NY 213-318-3515 CA 210-239-1099 TX
