Probably not. At least, not from the real SSA. But how many of you have gotten calls from someone who said they were the Social Security Administration? And maybe showed the real SSA phone number (1-800-772-1213) or a number close to it on your caller ID? Lots, right?

We’ve seen a spike in the number of people reporting those fake SSA calls to us. Since January 2018, we’ve gotten more than 63,000 reports of this scam. Three percent of those people reported a loss – and they lost $16.6 million (with a median loss of $1,484).

You can hear what the scam sounds like here. The caller usually says your Social Security number (SSN) has been suspended because of suspicious activity, or because it’s been involved in a crime. Sometimes, the scammer wants you to confirm your SSN to reactivate it. Sometimes, he says your bank account is about to be seized – but if you go put your money on gift cards and then give him the codes, SSA can help keep it safe. (Of course, you never want to do that, because then your money is just gone.)

To report this scam, go to ftc.gov/complaint. But if you already gave one of these callers your SSN and you're worried about identity theft, visit IdentityTheft.gov/ssa. And if you get one of these calls, remember:

  • Your Social Security number is not about to be suspended. Your bank account is not about to be seized.
  • The real SSA will never call to threaten your benefits or tell you to wire money, send cash, or put money on gift cards.
  • You can’t believe the numbers on your caller ID. Scammers can easily fake those. But if you’re worried, call the real SSA at 1-800-772-1213. You can trust that number if you dial it yourself – just not on your caller ID.
  • Never give your SSN, credit card or bank account number to anyone who contacts you. Ever.

To hear more from the honest-to-goodness SSA and the FTC about these scams, follow the Facebook Live at noon tomorrow on the SSA’s Facebook page.

I received a similar call from the famed Amanda Barnes saying that my SSN was used in South Texas. The call didn't state my name or any other details and asked to press 1 to speak to an officer. The number I got the call was from 800 279 5554

Received the "Officer Amanda Barnes" call today claiming suspicious activity in Texas. The number was 800-998-6465. Ironically, searching that number leads to a fax number at U.S. DEPARTMENT OF STATE — BUREAU OF CONSULAR AFFAIRS - UNITED KINGDOM.

Got a call today and several others before. Today was from 2538736048 saying that the SSA was filing a suit against me and an arrest warrant was issued for me due to the numerous offenses on my social security number. And to resolve this issue press 9 to speak with the representative. Uuuh yeah sure. I'm sure you'll fix it all. So dumb. Stop wasting our time.

I got a call saying my SSN was going to be canceled. So I returned the call and was real aggressive with him. I asked for his govt ID and he gave me a phony. Then he asked for my address. Ummm, that’s strange! The SSA should know all that! So I gave him the address to the White House. There was a silence, keyboard clicking, and then he hung up on me! Lol

I've been fooled today by these suckers! Phone number that called was 800 772 1212. Thing is- i always ignored these scammers and I never answer 800 callers but Ive missed a couple legit callers so i decided to answer the call today. And then this happened! 800 772 1212 called said he's an SSA gave me their badge and case number. They said my ssn has been compromised and there are 25 account that was opened under my name and I am commiting money laundering and do I accept these allegations and I said hell nah! So to clear my name i need to cooperate(as proof im innocent) to help basically get rid of the active warrant of arrest has been ordered They even called me from a local police dept impersonating a police officer and this imposter confirmed all allegations. They said this is an ongoing investigation, can't disclose to anyone because that makes me an accomplice. I was able to get some of my money back but I can't believe I didn't pay attention to the redflags i was seeing! My info has been compromised before and ive dealt with fraudulent activities that never resulted to me losing money. I thought this was similar- but it wasnt. I've been scammed.

SCAM -The Social Security Administration NEVER CALLS; they send a snail mail letter. If you look at the number called from - it's from overseas not the USA. Advice: This is a total scam and should be ignored; better yet, block them if you have the capability.

I just literally received one of those calls like a few seconds ago. It freaked me out a little, because this is the second time this has happened. I got one last year if I remember correctly. The number that called me was (1-475-207-4774) when I would try to call it back there would be no ringing on my end. It just says Calling... and that’s it. I’m seriously getting tired of these scammers.

Holy Cow! I've gotten the call from the same exact number today on my voice mail. Wish I've the foresight to save it, since I've not heard clearly what they have said is wrong with my ssn, other then to press 1. Like my mother said, if it was something important, they, may it be bank, gov alphabet agencies, or the police, will send you letters in mail, not call you on the phone. I mean how you really know who you're speaking to?

I keep getting the “call” from social security saying that my number has been suspended. I get them as many as 8-10 times a day, from different numbers! Since my husband and I have health conditions and several doctors, we can’t afford to ignore calls. I’ve been told not to answer any numbers that we don’t recognize. We have a voice mail, so if we don’t answer, it goes to voicemail. Either way, the scammers know it’s a real nice number. Any suggestions?

No point in making a complaint here because nothing is being done about it. I get these scam SSA calls each morning, every fifteen minutes, for about two hours.
