Probably not. At least, not from the real SSA. But how many of you have gotten calls from someone who said they were the Social Security Administration? And maybe showed the real SSA phone number (1-800-772-1213) or a number close to it on your caller ID? Lots, right?

We’ve seen a spike in the number of people reporting those fake SSA calls to us. Since January 2018, we’ve gotten more than 63,000 reports of this scam. Three percent of those people reported a loss – and they lost $16.6 million (with a median loss of $1,484).

You can hear what the scam sounds like here. The caller usually says your Social Security number (SSN) has been suspended because of suspicious activity, or because it’s been involved in a crime. Sometimes, the scammer wants you to confirm your SSN to reactivate it. Sometimes, he says your bank account is about to be seized – but if you go put your money on gift cards and then give him the codes, SSA can help keep it safe. (Of course, you never want to do that, because then your money is just gone.)

To report this scam, go to ftc.gov/complaint. But if you already gave one of these callers your SSN and you're worried about identity theft, visit IdentityTheft.gov/ssa. And if you get one of these calls, remember:

  • Your Social Security number is not about to be suspended. Your bank account is not about to be seized.
  • The real SSA will never call to threaten your benefits or tell you to wire money, send cash, or put money on gift cards.
  • You can’t believe the numbers on your caller ID. Scammers can easily fake those. But if you’re worried, call the real SSA at 1-800-772-1213. You can trust that number if you dial it yourself – just not on your caller ID.
  • Never give your SSN, credit card or bank account number to anyone who contacts you. Ever.

To hear more from the honest-to-goodness SSA and the FTC about these scams, follow the Facebook Live at noon tomorrow on the SSA’s Facebook page.

I got a call yesterday from SSA saying my # has been link with 17 bank accounts, 4 Apartments, 4 car loans and 2 car rentals and that I could get a new SS# if I just give them my #. The name the person gave me was Det. Alan Johnson #7031-07 and the # he called from is 305-503-6113 and they will answer SSA. I played the game with them from the beginning knowing it was a scam. I was bored and needed something to do. Told them that I knew this was a scam and that I wanted to play along. He got upset with me and hung up on me, not very nice of him. Call the phone # and give them hell. 3 0 5 - 5 0 3 - 6 1 1 3 ALAN JOHNSON

I've received 3 scam calls in the last 2 days from an "Officer Amanda Barnes" w/ the SSA. Each call has come from a 202 area code- which I've discovered is a Maryland area code- and has been a robotic sounding recording using poor English speaking skills. It states that my SS# has been used in "fraudulent activities in south of Texas". My name is never mentioned or any other personal info, so it's quite obvious it's a scam. Not sure where/who to report these to, but below are the three phone that #s : (202) 769-6976 (202) 749-0683 (202)757-9751 Thank you, & I hope no one falls victim to this nonsense!

833-879-1981 called today. 3 weeks ago I reported a complaint on a different number, as well. Is the FTC really compiling these complaints and will take action? I don't even answer my phone for people who aren't listed in my contacts.

I received a call from 844-450-4565. She asked my name and social security number and I gave my name but did not give SSN number and told her I am not supposed to give my SSN over the phone and she told there are a lot of suspicious activities going on your SSN. I told her I've not received any mail from SSA then she hanged up.

Got a call from Officer Victor Frank with the SSA from 602-529-3467. He said my ss# is being used fraudulently in a money laundering and drug smuggling operation. Wanted to know if I rented a Toyota Corolla in El Paso recently. He said they found the car with traces of cocaine in it and it was rented in my name. He asked me all kinds of personal information, which I made up as I went along. He said I was in big trouble and transferred me to Officer Mike Shawn with the DEA! Both of these men had very heavy Middle Eastern or Indian accents. When I wouldn't give him the correct ss# to match the made up name and dob I Gabe him, he started yelling at me that I was going to be arrested any minute and would go to jail for a very long time. 2 hours later I got another call from the same #, different officers, different crimes, same thing all over again. He ended up hanging up on me because my information was wrong. They're no fun, so I blocked the #.

Was just called twice by 877-516-9540 stating "Your Social Security number (SSN) has been suspended because of suspicious activity press one to find out about this investigation" I just hung up and blocked this caller. Though they called again under a different number this time I answered so my iPhone did not record the number under 'recent' calls. It makes me wonder how they are getting my number, I have been house hunting on the web recently so is the only way they retrieved my number.

1-800-609-7282 SSA scam number. I called the number. This area code is Washington State. They said I had a bank account in a bank in Roland Texas suspected of being drug money. They had my address in NY. They threaten to have me arrested. From the sounds of his voice he sounded very foreign. I explain I will call my local SSA and US Marshals locally . He kept saying I will connect you and then hung up. When I called back the number was dis-connected. With many businesses having security breaches I am putting more security for identity theft. We need to catch these people doing this.
