Probably not. At least, not from the real SSA. But how many of you have gotten calls from someone who said they were the Social Security Administration? And maybe showed the real SSA phone number (1-800-772-1213) or a number close to it on your caller ID? Lots, right?

We’ve seen a spike in the number of people reporting those fake SSA calls to us. Since January 2018, we’ve gotten more than 63,000 reports of this scam. Three percent of those people reported a loss – and they lost $16.6 million (with a median loss of $1,484).

You can hear what the scam sounds like here. The caller usually says your Social Security number (SSN) has been suspended because of suspicious activity, or because it’s been involved in a crime. Sometimes, the scammer wants you to confirm your SSN to reactivate it. Sometimes, he says your bank account is about to be seized – but if you go put your money on gift cards and then give him the codes, SSA can help keep it safe. (Of course, you never want to do that, because then your money is just gone.)

To report this scam, go to ftc.gov/complaint. But if you already gave one of these callers your SSN and you're worried about identity theft, visit IdentityTheft.gov/ssa. And if you get one of these calls, remember:

  • Your Social Security number is not about to be suspended. Your bank account is not about to be seized.
  • The real SSA will never call to threaten your benefits or tell you to wire money, send cash, or put money on gift cards.
  • You can’t believe the numbers on your caller ID. Scammers can easily fake those. But if you’re worried, call the real SSA at 1-800-772-1213. You can trust that number if you dial it yourself – just not on your caller ID.
  • Never give your SSN, credit card or bank account number to anyone who contacts you. Ever.

To hear more from the honest-to-goodness SSA and the FTC about these scams, follow the Facebook Live at noon tomorrow on the SSA’s Facebook page.

Just received a call from the SSA... caller claimed to be an agent, gave name, badge number, and case # then proceeded to tell me that my SSN was linked to multiple drug trafficking and money laundering charges in Texas. I did not disclose any information to her other than the last 4 of my social. She then transferred me to a supposed DEA agent who started telling me all about some law from 1974 and that they would need to suspend my Social for 45 minutes to investigate the case. I asked him for his info and a number to call him back at his agency, as this sounded like a scam that the I had googled on the FTC website. He ended the call. I suspect that this will work for some people, as it sounded fairly convincing and the call was from an area code that I recognized. I do really hope that the real DEA or FBI or whoever is looking into these kind of scams. Beware!

Wanted to share my experience. Just received an automated call that my SSN was suspected for fraudulent activity in Texas, press 1 to know more. I did that and was connected to someone with an India accent opening with "Social Security office" I let him know that I was transferred to understand whats going on. He asked for my name, I gave it, then my last 4 digits of SSN, I said I dont have it with me. Then asked my BDAY, I gave it but lied (said 27th instead of 26th) at this point he gave me a "case#" and an "arrest warrent #" saying that I am under investigation for money laundering and drug trafficking in El Paso Texas, he received a request to suspend/cancel my SSN ( I am actually here on a temporary working VISA so yes I was nervous hearing that) then gave me 2 addresses I am connected with in El Paso where the authorities found my name and all my personal information and asked me "have i been there" "who have i given my info out to" etc. then i hung up after messaging friends that it was occuring, googled it and seeing its high probability of a scam, # 312 - 838- 5881 Chicago, IL. Thought leaving this post might help others if this happens to them.

I received a robo call today from what looked to be a local number. They said that a warrant had been issued for me due to fraudulent activity linked to my SSN and I should press 1 to talk to an agent. Over the last week or so I've been barraged with these calls all using the same area code and exchange as my cell number. Obviously they are spoofed numbers. I will press 1 to speak to someone and they start their speil. I will stop them and tell them I know they are not SSA and that I work in Cybersecurity(I actually do). The minute I say it they immediately hang up. They call from a new number every time so no way to block them. Very frustrating.
