You may be skeptical when someone you don’t know sends you a text message you didn’t expect and it tells you to click on a link. Maybe that little voice in your head starts talking to you. I know mine does. It says, “Hmm, this could be a scam. Maybe someone wants to steal my personal information. Or get me to pay for something.”

I guess that's why scammers come up with new stories all the time, like a package tracking scam we're hearing about. Here's how it works.

Scammers send a text message with a fake shipment tracking code and a link to update your delivery preferences. In this case, the message says it’s from FedEx.

But they might use the name of another well-known shipping company, or the good old U.S. Postal Service.

Cue that skeptical little voice in your head. Here’s what it might be thinking:

  • “Was I expecting a package delivery?”
  • “Did I send a package to someone?”
  • “Did I ask for text notifications?”

Tip: If you get an unexpected text message, don’t click on any links. If you think it could be legit, contact the company using a website or phone number you know is real. Don’t use the information in the text message.

In this version of the scam the link takes you to a fake Amazon website. There, you're invited to take a customer satisfaction survey. And you might just win a free prize. But to get it, you have to give them your credit card number to pay for shipping.

Hopefully that wise little voice in your head is thinking:

  • “I shouldn't have clicked that link!”
  • “Why would a link to my package delivery preferences take me to an unrelated website?”
  • “You said the prize was free, but now I need to pay. What else am I agreeing to pay for?”
  • “I really shouldn’t have clicked on that link!”

Tip: Some companies offer so-called “free trials” that come with hidden costs. Here’s what you should consider before you sign up for a free trial offer.

Scammers may be turning to text messages as a new tactic. But there’s a lot you can do right now to protect yourself. Read How to Recognize and Report Spam Text Messages to learn what to do about spam text messages and how to report them.

Just got this text at 1:28 am. The text Says (“ Hello, your FedEx package with code GB- 8113- CB26 is waiting for you to set your delivery preference. “) Then there’s a link to click. I hate these scam calls & texts. Always having to decide if they are legit or not.

I received one of these supposedly from FedEx. I started to respond as I am expecting a delivery. I wondered why they would need my name and address if they had already tried to deliver......I made up a date of birth as it seemed irrelevant. The penny finally dropped when they asked for a redelivery fee. Deleted everything. Strange people out there.

I'd like to know how this happened to me: I ordered something on Overstock, my first time, paid via paypal. Within an hour I start getting texts, from different numbers, telling me they're from Walmart and I need to pick up, and they named the exact item I bought on Overstock, at Walmart, with a tiny url link. I didn't click the link, called Overstock what in the world is going on, they confirmed not from them. But how did this text scammer know what I just bought on Overstock and my phone number?

My partner has just clicked on the link from a FedEx text message about a non-delivery. He paid the fee (Only a couple of £s). He has now stopped his card with the bank. Is this sufficient?

I had the same text day before yesterday, but they did not say my name in the text. I did exactly what you've said before finding this information out. I've gone as far as blocking the mobile number that sent the text to me. Real site stated there's no parcel and no such ref. number either. The fake one will want your full name, date of birth, bank details and full address if you click on theirs. Don't do it. I didn't. Because I knew what to expect.

A good way to tell some scammers is if when directed to the “fedEx” website try and select their privacy policy or pretty much any other button besides the button they want you to press and usually it will not do anything, where on a normal website you select any Facebook, privacy policy or any other buttons you will be directed to another page Also, when directed to an official website the name of it should be at the top in the link Example : real fedex website will always have fedex.com Scammer: trackusparcel.com That is the actually site that I was directed to !!!! I repeat !! TRACKUSPARCEL.com is a scammmmmmm!!!

My partner received a text message earlier from FedEx regarding a package that he is not expecting. Stupidly (probably), we clicked the link which sent us to a site looking very much like the official FedEx site. It asks you to rebook delivery. We could see that further down the form it asks for payment. So I then Googled FedEx and went to the official site, entered the tracking number and it was not recognised.

This stuff is rampant using fake United Parcel Service emails too. You just have to keep track of all packages you are expecting.

Recently received Telemarketing Call (Reverse Lookup says, No Record Found). The Caller (spoofed?) ID was FedEx. The call was from the 901 area code (Memphis). I've gotten them before and so I didn't answer. Tried to tell FedEx, but they make it impossible to reach them. Telemarketers and Scammers cost this Country Billions.

I got scammed from a fake PayPal site. They actually had my bank card number and tried to charge my bank $700 to a man in Australia! That was extremely scary. I closed my PayPal account and refuse to open another, although it was the simplest way for me to transact business online. Yesterday I got one from FedEx? Who knows? It was a text saying there was no safe place to leave my pkg although they do it every day!! I found this website trying to find out if it’s a scam…still looking for that answer!

I have gotten plenty of these text message scams and I have never been taken by them. It's basic common sense people. If you're not expecting anything to be delivered by whoever the company says they are then you should call them by getting their actual number like I did when I first received one of these scams . Don't trust any unknown text message you get. Don't click on the link they sent you. Block the number and delete the message.

Received a text from what appeared to be from Fedex stating they couldn't deliver a package with tracking details, etc -no one answered door for signature. However, it was a scam. Since I was expecting several packages, I clicked on the link as requested to have the package redelivered. The link asked for personal info & credit card to pay $2.02 for redelivery. Be careful. I know not to click on links in text unless I'm 100% certain it's from the sender & in my senior moment did so - ugh!! Now hoping I don't have trouble from doing so.

I'm getting texts again about packages coming to me that I'm not expecting. In my case I received two packages but could not identify the items inside and tossed them out. I had to pick them up from the post office and wondered if someone else was going to pick them up but I got there first. Then I checked all my credit cards to make sure there were no suspicious charges and if so, someone may have been using my ID to order things and when they arrived they would go pick them up leaving me out money. I didn't find any charges but I definitely think it was a scam but I got to the post office before the scammer could. This was all proceeded by numerous texts about the progress of the packages tracking. Very odd
