Are you a United States citizen living abroad? For millions of expatriates, help from home is on the way in the form of COVID-19 economic impact payments. Unfortunately, scammers also are on the way, and they’re eager to pluck the payment from your pocket.

Depending on your income, U.S. expatriates can get up to $1,200 each, or up to $2,400 for couples, plus $500 for each qualifying child, just as you would if living stateside. And, most people don’t need to do anything to get their payments. The IRS will deposit your payment directly to your U.S. bank account (the IRS can’t direct deposit money to a foreign account), or mail your payment using information from your 2018 or 2019 tax return or from your Social Security retirement or other federal benefits program.

If you haven’t filed a federal tax return for 2018 or 2019 and don’t get any federal benefits, you may have to give the IRS sensitive information, including your Social Security number and bank account number (if you have one), to get your payment.

Scammers will try to take advantage of this to try to steal your money, your personal information, or both. So, to help avoid scammers, use only irs.gov/coronavirus and the tools there to submit sensitive information to the IRS. Use the IRS’s guide to figure out which IRS tool to use. And, visit the IRS’s Economic Impact Payment Center for answers to common questions. Consider talking with a tax professional if your tax filing situation is complex.

With economic impact money flowing in, and many people confused about the distribution process, this is a time to stay on high alert for scammers. Here are some things that ONLY scammers will do:

  • Call, email, or text you to ask for, or “verify,” your personal or financial information. The IRS won’t contact you by phone, email, text, or social media about your payment.
  • Ask you to pay a transfer or other fee to get your stimulus money. There are no fees.
  • Send you a very real-looking check for more than you’re expecting, then tell you to deposit it, take your proper payment, and return the “overpayment” by sending cash, gift cards, or money transfers. A bank may be fooled and cash the check, but when it turns out to be fraudulent – which it will – you will owe the bank any money that you withdrew.

Learn more about avoiding economic impact payment scams here. And, if you spot a scam, please tell us about it at ftc.gov/complaint.

Hi, my parents receive ss retirement benefits through their US bank direct deposit. They have moved with me here in Canada in June 2019. They haven’t gotten anything yet. They are non-filers and their SSA 1099 shows the address here in Canada. Per IRS, most of the SS retirement has received theirs. Get payment doesnt work for them.

Is there an extra form for US-Citizens living abroad? When I use the "Non-Filers: Enter Payment Info Here Tool" Form, it doesn't accept my correct phone number as valid. The option to not use phone verification however comes after you have to type in your Phonenumber. Thats why I ask if this is the only form or not.

I am living in Germany and had assumed I would not receive a stimulus check. I applied for and received a stimulus check for freelancers here in Germany. In the meantime, my in-laws (whose address we still use in the US) called to let us know we’d received our stimulus payment. My question is: am I allowed to accept both the US and Germany payments? Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance...

What I idid was I use the track my payment link in the IRS website and sent the required documents by fax ( Form you have to download and scanned copy of the letter you received). After 6 weeks, I received the check from the US Embassy in the Ph. Problem now, the bank where I receive my pension will not change the check or allow me to deposit it. I read online that US Embassy can change it to cash. I'm not sure if its true.

It's basically just an international cheque. You will not be able to encash it directly outside USA. If you are near the US Embassy or the Consulate in Cebu, you should be able to get them to either cash it or reissue it from a local bank.

Hi! I have just Sent a message to a person who has the same problem like us and the rest of the people who live here in the Philippines. I came up with a solution, since A few people or most of us received our check through the US Embassy in Manila. I have an idea, why can't all of us convince the US Embassy to encash our stimulus checks? Can we do that instead? Pls let us know. Cathy

Hi Mary. I have the same problem with my stimulus check at this time. I have tried 4 different banks but nobody would like to accept my EIP except China Bank. However, China Bank won't accept this stimulus check if you don't have $500 as initial deposit. So you will be able to deposit it in China BANK IF YOU HAVE THAT dollar money as security deposit or else have a dollar acct already opened for at least one year in BDO.

My parents live in Canada since July 2019 and get SS retirment via direct deposit with a US bank. They still haven’t received their stimulus check. They don’t normally file taxes. Not sure if they are now required to file taxes as they now live abroad to qualify for the EIP.

I live in Thailand and am registered with the US Social Security office in Manila. I receive my SS Benefits direct deposit at the Bank of Bangkok, New York City branch. Using the worksheet (Notice 703) on my Form SSA-1099 line E is $11,676 USD. I am married to a Thai citizen and our marriage is not registered in the US. So she is considered a foreign alien. Do I need to file 2019 US Taxes to get my Covid 19 stimulus check? I can claim Single, Head of Household because I support my disabled brother-in -law and twin six year old step grandsons who are Thai citizens. Thank You!

In the same boat here. I called EIP customer service to request a debit card and cancel the check. They said no they cannot do that. We can write "VOID" on the check and send it back with explanation but they cannot guarantee what will happen. So I am holding to my useless check for now..

My question is how does someone who receives SS retirement benefits deposited to a foreign bank account in a country which currently has no mail service receive the stimulus payment? Is it possible the IRS would send the check to the U.S. embassy where it could be picked up by the recipient?

A few minutes ago I came across a blog for US expats in Cambodia and saw this: "May 21 update from the US Embassy: The Embassy recently received 187 U.S. Treasury checks (economic impact payments) for U.S. citizens and is in the process of notifying recipients in Cambodia of their arrival." I hope the US embassy in Belarus does the same.

Hi everyone, I also was being locked out after trying different versions of my foreign address, even with my return in hand. Finally I asked my tax preparer in the U.S. to try and he was able to only to find out that my check had been processed on April 24th. IRS doesn't have my direct deposit info because I don't have a liability with them nor do I receive a refund. Get My Payment will not allow you to enter anything after your check has been processed. Since mail service is suspended to most countries, how and when will we receive our checks?

I am a Social Security Beneficiary living in Canada and Not required to file taxes. I receive my SS funds deposited to my bank account here in Canada every month. I read that I do not need to do anything because the IRS will use information from SSA1099 form to send stimulus monies. But then I am also reading that IRS does not deposit money to a foreign bank account. Am I missing something here? What do I need to do?

This is the same situation I am in. I retired in Europe, have a foreign bank account that SSA auto-deposits my SS benefits into each month with no problems at all. Like you, I also owe nothing to IRS and therefore have not sent in taxes for a few years now. But if as this article states, IRS will not deposit EIP money into a foreign account and even though I have a US account in America yet cannot fill out the IRS form online to give them this information because they won't accept my foreign telephone numbers , what the heck am I to do? I can't even track my payment because of the foreign tele. numbers and foreign addressed that won't be accepted by the forms! It's so frustrating. And today I read that IRS is working on adding a bunch of foreign languages to their site. What a waste of time when anyone with a computer can auto-translate information. Better for them to concentrate on getting our payments to us before going off onto another 'project'.

The IRS "get my payment" informs me thst my check was sent on april 24. Today is may 23 and I havd not received my check. They have my correct address but I live in south america and here everything gets lost in the mail. It is not reliable. There are no instructions on what to do. Most likely I won't receive the IRS letter either.

The IRS needs to post information on what to do if the check gets los in the mail. International mail arriving to Colombia South America gets lost all the time. My check was mailed one month ago based on IRS get my payment info. I did not get the letter the send with info 2 weeks after the check. That information souldbe posted so US citizens living abroad can inform the IRS when their checks get lost in the mail. I can give the IRS my US bank information but the system did not allow me to do that and now the check is lost.
