Image of cupid and heartNot everyone using online dating sites is looking for love. Scammers create fake online profiles using photos of other people — even stolen pictures of real military personnel. They profess their love quickly. And they tug at your heartstrings with made-up stories about how they need money — for emergencies, hospital bills, or travel. Why all of the tricks? They’re looking to steal your money.

As if all that isn’t bad enough, romance scammers are now involving their victims in online bank fraud. Here’s how it works: The scammers set up dating profiles to meet potential victims. After they form a “relationship,” they come up with reasons to ask their love interest to set up a new bank account. The scammers transfer stolen money into the new account, and then tell their victims to wire the money out of the country. Victims think they’re just helping out their soulmate, never realizing they’re aiding and abetting a crime.

Here are some warning signs that an online love interest might be a fake. They ask you to:

  • chat off of the dating site immediately, using personal email, text, or phone
  • wire money using Western Union or Money Gram
  • set up a new bank account

Did you know you can do an image search of your love interest’s photo in your favorite search engine? If you do an image search and the person’s photo appears under several different names, you’re probably dealing with a scammer. And if the person’s online profile disappears a few days after they meet you, that’s another tip-off.

Here’s the real deal: Don’t send money to someone you met online — for any reason. If your online sweetheart asks for money, you can expect it’s a scam.

Unfortunately, online dating scams are all too common. There may be tens of thousands of victims, and only a small fraction report it to the FTC. If this happens to you, please report it at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.

Was chatting with someone who claimed to be an 'Orthopedic Surgeon' in Yemen. He claims to be in a war zone.Says he has a son named Elvis who is 15 and in boarding school in Germany. He has messed up a few times and said daughter. He said he left his wife because of drugs and she overdosed. He sent me a text saying I was one man in a million and he would always love me for being the sweetest man in the world. LOL Also his Facebook profile had "him" listed as a "she" . Goes by Stephen BLISS and web add. Anneliese Eva Schenk who he claims is his late wife (who had atleast 25 profiles).

I had an encounter with a scammer recently. In his case, he was widowed and had a young son. He needed $225.00 for his birthday. He also claimed to be a Sargeant. Many things were off with him. I’m 35 and he is supposed to be a year or so older than me, and he had no clue who popular bands were when we were younger. Also had no family. It also felt off to me to be asked for money so soon after meeting.

First, let me just say that scammers have gotten Much smarter. Second, and I can't stress this enough, DO NOT EVER SEND MONEY OR OBTAIN ITUNES CARDS FOR ANYONE YOU HAVE NEVER PERSONALLY MET, AS IN FACE TO FACE! No matter HOW persuasive the story sounds. These hideous creatures care only for the money they think they'll get from you. They are smarter, but remain stupid iAd far as their 'bait' stories go. Always the 'beloved dead wife' God bless her soul, and the 'DAUGHTER/SON' they left behind. Tragic. Right. Oh yeah, they are always, ALWAYS, a 'contractor' of some sort, an engineer (insert whatever type you like) on an oil rig or else a military man stationed over seas. DON'T FALL FOR IT! Military personnel need only contact their CO if they have a problem of any kind and guys on oil rigs have similar emergency contact people affiliated with the oil company. You can spot them pretty easily by these stupid (oh and So Sad!) stories. Also, they tend to send you emails that run at least six or seven pages long (that's right) telling you their sorrowful life history. Watch for the grammatical and spelling errors. Come on folks! Americans don't talk that way! It's usually, "hi, how ya doin?" and that's it. As a rule, an American wants to get on the phone with you, ASAP, not text lengthy messages. (Millennials being the exception!) These sadistic goons are brassy, bold, ~ and very, very cunning. Watch out for the symptoms I've described and if you see them, run, don't walk. BLOCK and DELETE!!!! Lonely people are very vulnerable. A show of interest and kind words go a long way. Please, please, PLEASE be careful and don't let these evil vipers ruin your search for a companion. There are lots of good men and women on these sites and when you find one they won't be boring you with lengthy tall tales ~ or asking you for money. Good luck!

-------1-------- ALEX FRANCIS ON GOOGLE HANGOUTS grrr..I have two back to back experiences with this. They both friended me on facebook and then asked me to talk with them over at google hangouts. The first called himself, Alex Francis. He said he was working for the united nations on an oil rig off the russian coast. Few conversations in..he wanted to quit his job and come be with me. I was to send $1,200.00 to a money place in Georgia addressed to his friend. I hope I saved that conversation in case anyone needs it. Of course I did not send the moneyand blocked him. -------2-------- FRANCIS RON MORGAN ON GOOGLE HANGOUTS He said he was a doctor stationed in Syria. He listed lots of stuff he had, home in Louisiana, mercedes, etc. Did not take many posts for him to love and want to marry me. He sounded like the perfect man. Now he wants me to send him two (2), $100.00 each iTune cards. I don't know what they are, but I don't think I am going to buy and send them. This one hurt. I liked him.

So I'm new to the online dating scene. I'm 43 recently divorced. I have learned very quickly to have a healthy skepticism when communicating online. Yet even though I'm a newbie even I immediately picked up on some of these people. Within hours of making first contact asking for money for their pay as you go phone. Or the I'll meet and hookup with you but first I need to verify your identity/age, with a credit card of course. And those examples are actually some of the smarter ones. A couple of them started set up the scam in their "Hello" message. But the one that almost got me was a woman who had gone back and forth with for over a week. Not the slightest hint of anything. I'd even gone as far as running her pictures through tineye and digging up her FB account that had been unused for almost 3 years. All checked out, her name, pictures, backstory all consistent with what I uncovered in mu due diligence. Then the other shoe dropped. It was so casual that I almost didn't think twice. It wasn't even a large amount. At most 50 dollars on a gaming card (Steam) for her son. No biggie, ive I've gotten those for my kids. And her a single mom with not much disposable income. Honestly it could have all been on the up and up but timing wise it was not in her favor. Had already been hit up multiple times, so I was on the defensive. Point being believe me I get it. We're just happy to be having interaction with an actual person after all the BS the dating sites put us through with the bots and site monitors with fake profiles. But it felt like a long con and this was just the tip. Single mom, I get it. Doesn't work, I'm single dad of 3 full time. It also came the day after I probably showed my hand and expressed some actual feelings forming. So I've said ALL of that to say this. I have 1 hard and fast rule: no money. Period. Doesn't matter how long we've communicated. If she was for real then we'd be talking still but curiously communication cut off after that. Imhad a woman take all my money for 20 years but at least she was sleeping with me. Lol. Just make that rule, stick to it, and if they are for real they'll understand and accept NO!!

He threatened to ruin my online social media if I didnt send him $1,500 in iTunes gift cards. I hear he is on dating sites looking for a new girlfriend to use for money. This sounds like a scam. He's trying to scare you into sending money. There are other comments on this blog with similar stories. If you send money once, scammers try to get more of your money. They make up complicated stories that are totally false, and try to convince you to pay money for shipping, taxes, fees or other charges. You don't have to send money or pay anyone. He did not really find gold and he is not shipping it to you.

omg I didn't know I wasn't the only one dealing with this. A lot of girls I met on the internet would act like they want to see me, I'd send them money for plane tickets and other fares...and they'd take it and leave. I am so sick of being treated like this, and some of them were fake, some were REAL that I verified but were terrible people, some were openly admitting of being a straight male trying to make money, even screenshotted me bank account numbers from all the money they make off of people's misfortune, it makes me sick that I have to work myself into poverty at a trashy job and these people mentioned sometimes make THOUSANDS a month even tens of thousands, doing this. I didn't even know you could report these people and next time I see it happen I will get them in trouble so fast it's not even funny. I also am resigning from relationships that start online with intentions of real life, so unless someone allows me to just pay for the ticket and fare myself, and go see them at a public place, and make sure they are real, I am truly done. I've gotten thousand stolen from me

OMG. Since January 9th, I've been dealing with a James Morgan! He PM'd me on IG. I'd never given guys the time of day on there, but out of curiosity, I replied to him; almost immediately, he asked me to download the Google Hangouts app, saying his iPhone was touchy and Hangouts was more reliable. Long story short, he claimed to be from San Diego, CA and is a 'Contractor,' even sending me before/after pics of a kitchen & bathroom he remodeled. Within a week of communicating, all of a sudden, he gained a contract job in Istanbul, Turkey and that he was going to make a bunch of money, so he could come meet me in person, blah blah blah...He conned me I to purchasing $300 worth of iTunes cards, because he was out of the country and needed data to be able to do work from his iPhone. THEN he was supposedly traveling to pick up 10 million dollars worth of gold in London, that he supposedly inherited from his late father. He went so far as sending me a pic of himself smiling in some warehouse, then about 8 suitcases full of gold bars, with a scale on the floor in front of them. I asked him how he planned to transport that back to the states...It went down to his supposedly getting arrested at the London Airport for not having the proper documents to claim the gold, nor money to pay the tax on said gold. Some woman claiming to be an attorney representing him, messaged me in the middle of the night through WhatsApp, telling me that James was arrested, why, and that she was going to have to come up with 53,000 in UK money to bail him out. This was over 2 weeks ago at this point and now he's supposedly out of prison, but needs $1200 to get back to the states. He's been trying to convince me that he's real, to the point of sending me a pic of his passport. Funny thing is, he can't keep his info. straight; told me weeks ago that his birthday is April 3rd and that he's going to be 43; his passport says November 19, 1974 as being his birthdate. I'm so over it. I wanted so badly to believe he wasn't scamming me.

I have a James Morgan, and a Richard Williams talking to me on hangouts! They both messaged me whilst playing scrabble. Both are engineers on rigs! They have both sent me photos, both were quick to tell me they love me after a few days. Richard keeps telling me I’m his love and James keeps calling me his Queen!! I was a bit wary from the start and noticed a few inconsistencies in their stories. It came to a head for me 2 nights ago when I dropped onto conversation that my daughter had seen James’ msgs lol. That night he said the rig was turning the WiFi off and he needed to continue to speak to his daughter who is in Texas. He said he needs money, so I said ok how much do you need and he said £300 amazon voucher! Not quite sure what an amazon voucher is going to do for the WiFi!! I said I would see what I could do. After that he was asking for sexy pics lol. He didn’t get any and I haven’t spoken to either of them since! Richard hasn’t asked for anything yet, has no children but is a man of god!! I haven’t spoken to him and won’t ever again.

First contacted on November 25'18 I think it is the same guy I had been talking to,his name on Instagram is van.david9 he was widower for 5 years with a 13yo son his name Henry. When I asked wife's cause of death he said car accident. He said he was from Netherlands and lived in Amsterdam, was a military dr deployed in Afghanistan.Soon he asked me to get Hangouts app and asked for my email to add me,also ask for pictures of myself. He said that the war was getting closer to his medical camp and he was afraid of dying without meeting me and leaving his son,he said he had no family. So he said he was there for 5 months out of 7 and he had to pay U$5,500.00 to be released from his contract and go back home to his son and me to spend Christmas. He also asked me to go to Walmart or apple store and get iTunes cards of $200 which I did and then said he helped a fellow dr with 2 cards $50 each later on asked for more so he could watch movies when he was bored,total:$400.00 on iTunes cards. When I confront him abt scams and not been the guy from profile he made a video and sent to me,which I have.I asked him for the bank info pretending I would send the money, he sent it also,I found out a little late that I was getting scammed and told him, blocked him on ig,deleted hangouts, but lost $400.00 I have bank info he gave me BB&T addressed in Atlanta, when I asked abt why a bank in USA he said honey UN sent me here and it is in America, because Americans rule the world. He was very polite and when called I could notice his strong accent and poor English, but the man in the video was very handsome, tall, dark skin and similar to the man from the profile pictures, but I learned that the pics belongs to a real dr from Brazil that might no been aware of this whole situation.
