Image of cupid and heartNot everyone using online dating sites is looking for love. Scammers create fake online profiles using photos of other people — even stolen pictures of real military personnel. They profess their love quickly. And they tug at your heartstrings with made-up stories about how they need money — for emergencies, hospital bills, or travel. Why all of the tricks? They’re looking to steal your money.

As if all that isn’t bad enough, romance scammers are now involving their victims in online bank fraud. Here’s how it works: The scammers set up dating profiles to meet potential victims. After they form a “relationship,” they come up with reasons to ask their love interest to set up a new bank account. The scammers transfer stolen money into the new account, and then tell their victims to wire the money out of the country. Victims think they’re just helping out their soulmate, never realizing they’re aiding and abetting a crime.

Here are some warning signs that an online love interest might be a fake. They ask you to:

  • chat off of the dating site immediately, using personal email, text, or phone
  • wire money using Western Union or Money Gram
  • set up a new bank account

Did you know you can do an image search of your love interest’s photo in your favorite search engine? If you do an image search and the person’s photo appears under several different names, you’re probably dealing with a scammer. And if the person’s online profile disappears a few days after they meet you, that’s another tip-off.

Here’s the real deal: Don’t send money to someone you met online — for any reason. If your online sweetheart asks for money, you can expect it’s a scam.

Unfortunately, online dating scams are all too common. There may be tens of thousands of victims, and only a small fraction report it to the FTC. If this happens to you, please report it at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.

I have had a guy from Mingle dating messaging me on Kik this last week. Suddenly messages came to an abrupt end cos i was suspicious & questioned. Name James or Marcus Liam in Texas. Said his wife died in a car crash, was very sad, his two sons left him not long ago to live with his mum in Chelsea, UK, he was born & bred there! Said babe this & that all the time, how instantly loved me cos i looked so beautiful in my pic. Wanted spend rest of life with me. Said was bday Xmas eve & wanted a gift card! When i mentioned age it didnt match to his mingle profile. Pics he sent didn’t add up. Things did not seem right. And is a very good looking guy. Now complete silence from him after I said just be honest. Cut me off by saying am ending this now cos u dont trust me. Wouldnt video call or speak to me even after saying all he did & was in a relationship with me! And was born & bred in UK & would come back here for me & his boys. I have been trying to find him on other sites without any luck

Omg I am talking to the same guy. Maxwell Francisco Fredrick. He said he grew in Liverpool and his dad’s American, mom’s British mix Italian . Live in Magala. In the beginning he said he wanted a serious relationship and even talked about the future and having kids. Then he said he would like to send me some bags and shoes and jewelry to make me up(he even asked me for the shoes size) but I have to pax the tax. Then I think the delicious company is weird as well so I contacted with them told them don’t send it to me .it might be cat-fishing and I printed screaming your massage and texted to the pilot .it seems that he didn’t get shocked

The funny this is that I live in SH and he is in Spin. I told him I don’t like long distance and he said he can come to visit me. I’m like, hello, it’s still COVID19 out there!

I am right there with you, mine is asking me to send him steam cards to help pay for groceries while he is overseas waiting for a contract to finish that will probably never finish because he's waiting for me to send him money which I won't send, I already tried to wire 10,000 but luckily the bank suspected fraud and stop the process ... he's still talking to me and we use Hangouts but that is the only form of communication, no phone number is given. Every morning he sends me a poem along with a picture of flowers and tell me how much I mean to him and I'm the only one besides his mom in his life and without me he would probably kill himself..... and absolutely tears me up inside because if it's real I would be devastated but in my mind I know that it's not real especially after reading all these stories... Stay strong women

Sassy12, I have a good friend who is talking to a Freddy in Jordan, so he says. He wants to send her a lot of money he has "found". Did he say where he got the money he wanted to send you, how he was going to send it? I am worried, she said she has researched him, but this is just to similar and she has to pay to get the money here.
