Image of cupid and heartNot everyone using online dating sites is looking for love. Scammers create fake online profiles using photos of other people — even stolen pictures of real military personnel. They profess their love quickly. And they tug at your heartstrings with made-up stories about how they need money — for emergencies, hospital bills, or travel. Why all of the tricks? They’re looking to steal your money.

As if all that isn’t bad enough, romance scammers are now involving their victims in online bank fraud. Here’s how it works: The scammers set up dating profiles to meet potential victims. After they form a “relationship,” they come up with reasons to ask their love interest to set up a new bank account. The scammers transfer stolen money into the new account, and then tell their victims to wire the money out of the country. Victims think they’re just helping out their soulmate, never realizing they’re aiding and abetting a crime.

Here are some warning signs that an online love interest might be a fake. They ask you to:

  • chat off of the dating site immediately, using personal email, text, or phone
  • wire money using Western Union or Money Gram
  • set up a new bank account

Did you know you can do an image search of your love interest’s photo in your favorite search engine? If you do an image search and the person’s photo appears under several different names, you’re probably dealing with a scammer. And if the person’s online profile disappears a few days after they meet you, that’s another tip-off.

Here’s the real deal: Don’t send money to someone you met online — for any reason. If your online sweetheart asks for money, you can expect it’s a scam.

Unfortunately, online dating scams are all too common. There may be tens of thousands of victims, and only a small fraction report it to the FTC. If this happens to you, please report it at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.

Is he French? Did he say his kid needed peronal items because he left in a hurry and didn't leave enough for his son to get supplies? At to his point I've had no less than 10 men try to pull something similar to what I'm ready by in these threads. Latest one, Finnish, into gemstones wanted me to invest money with him to buy me some. When I said I'd need more info he said I didn't trust him and started saying all kind of mean things. Said I'd never find anyone with my attitude. And this was only 3 days into chatting with him.

Your story is similar to mine. My guy goes by name of Robert Henrik Jonas. Says he is 57, from Netherlands, widowed, has 15 yr old daughter, Sofia, in boarding school in Oregon. His daughter emails me, telling me how happy she is that her dad is in love with me. He works on offshore oil rig in Norway...says he is supposed to get vacation soon but keeps saying his vacation has been delayed due to work. He started telling me he loves right away, sent me pic of engagement ring, proposed to me. Always asking me for ITunes cards. Calls me on Hangouts almost every night.

I talked to this guy for five months- professed to be a German marine engineer in the Baltic Sea. Again he asked me to pay for something out of his account - younger picture in the bank account profile- very handsome. Account showed nearly two million dollars. Keeps asking for google cards for child. Got me to change bank account. Asked for money to pay housekeeper ( it went to Nigeria)! Then said ships ‘agent’ could give him limited access to his account wanted my bank account details, passwords , pin to get through all security checks. Nothing happened for a few weeks until I told him I had made a transfer from another account. Two hours after telling him- my whole bank account was cleaned out- the lot! Thousands! STAY AWAY from this scammer, he is very convincing!

Oscar Harrison started chatting with me on Words 2. He said he was a general surgeon in a military camp in Syria, on a contract with the US military. He made a big deal out of telling me he wae looking for his passpory, then sent a picture of it. He said he could not video chat because he didn't have a camera on his phone, yet he sent me several snapshots over the few days we chatted. He asked me to download "hangout" so we could chat easier and send photos. He initiated chat eith me every few hours for a couple of days, then nothing for 24 hours. I texted him to find out if he was ok. He resonded saying I was a beautiful lady, and he didn't want to be a distaction. I had told him I was very happily married, and that I had told my husband about him. There was nothing wrong with being friends. He said he was a widower, and he had 2 daughters in boarding school for nursing, and they didn't allow phones, so they used walkie "torqueys" to communicate. He was unable to call his girls, but needed new "steam" card to charge his wallkie "torquey", but he was unable to go where they were sold and he was unable to contact his "agent" to get him a new one. I wasn't sure what he was talking about, because a) is there a walkie talkie made that can transmit overseas? And b) he had a phone in which he was talking to me. And c) I can't believe any boarding school that had kids with parents overseas working in a military instalation would deny a child the opportunity to speak to thier parent somehow. Anyway...he said it was time fir him to go to morning prayers, that they prayed severel times a day for their patients , their safety and their families. The next time I hward from him, he said their was an explosion in the camp, and all of their foid supply was gone. He said not even the government could get to them, because it was such a secret location and the area was infiltrated with terrorists. The only way they could get help was for him to get a hold of his agent, and to do that, he needed to get that card to charge his walkie "torquey". He kept telling me I could get it at any pharmacy or game shop. I told him a) I don't drive, b)we live nearly 50 miles from any store that sold them. c) how would I get it to him if I was able to get one. And d) I didnt know i I had that much money. He said I could snap a picture of the back of the card and send it to him in "hangout". Then he demonstrated.....using the phone that he told me had no camera. He even called me and talked about the things we had discussed in chat. Then he wanted me to pray with him "in Jesus name". I had he assumed he was muslim, but he claimed to be a christian. Anyway, I told him there was nothing I could do on Sunday, because I had to go to the bank to see if I had any money in my savings account. At 9:30 Monday morning he messageed me to find out if I got the card. I told him I had forgotten that we had clised that account. I was very sorry, but Icould not give or even loan him money I did not have. He told me to take good care of myself, and i haven't heard from him since. I pretty much knew he was scamming me from the moment he sent me the picture of himself and his daughters and the picture oc his passport on the "phone that had no camera". I kind of wanted to know how far he would take it. I kept telling him of people within the military hospital, ie, the commanding officer, the supply officer, the chaplain, even the red cross. He kept trying to redirect the conversation . It went from how he would spend his own money to get food to keep everyone from starving to death, to needing to talk to his girls. I really don't know what would motivate someine to keep up a story with so many holes in it. Don't try this. We're not as dumb as you think we are.

He talked to me so sweetly and romantically and then all of a sudden he has a problem and needs help getting the internet in Syria where he is stationed. He only has 3 1/2 years left in his contract and he will be coming to Louisiana to see me when he gets out. He needs a Google Play card to get the internet so he can continue to talk to me.. He said it is only 100.00 and if I love him I will send it to him. He sent me a picture of the lab where he works and a picture of himself in it. It is the same picture of the man in the profile. PLEASE ladies (and gents). If someone you have never met asks you for money, why are you even thinking of giving it to them? If the stories here sound similar to yours, regardless of the name they have given or even their photo, then it is likely to be a scam. You DO NOT need a photo for comparison. BLOCK them and keep YOUR money in YOUR pocket/bank. PLEASE, do not ruin your life. Of course, if you have plenty of money to just lose...... Keep safe.

I had the same kind of scam but slightly different stories. Always a man , says he's madly in love w/me, asks for iTunes and Apple cards etc.. then asks for money which I never send, and gets mad when you don't send it! I've had several "cat fishers", it hapoens all the time, 3rd world countries try to steal American wealthy or everyone's money to help their families. Very sad all thge way around.
