Image of cupid and heartNot everyone using online dating sites is looking for love. Scammers create fake online profiles using photos of other people — even stolen pictures of real military personnel. They profess their love quickly. And they tug at your heartstrings with made-up stories about how they need money — for emergencies, hospital bills, or travel. Why all of the tricks? They’re looking to steal your money.

As if all that isn’t bad enough, romance scammers are now involving their victims in online bank fraud. Here’s how it works: The scammers set up dating profiles to meet potential victims. After they form a “relationship,” they come up with reasons to ask their love interest to set up a new bank account. The scammers transfer stolen money into the new account, and then tell their victims to wire the money out of the country. Victims think they’re just helping out their soulmate, never realizing they’re aiding and abetting a crime.

Here are some warning signs that an online love interest might be a fake. They ask you to:

  • chat off of the dating site immediately, using personal email, text, or phone
  • wire money using Western Union or Money Gram
  • set up a new bank account

Did you know you can do an image search of your love interest’s photo in your favorite search engine? If you do an image search and the person’s photo appears under several different names, you’re probably dealing with a scammer. And if the person’s online profile disappears a few days after they meet you, that’s another tip-off.

Here’s the real deal: Don’t send money to someone you met online — for any reason. If your online sweetheart asks for money, you can expect it’s a scam.

Unfortunately, online dating scams are all too common. There may be tens of thousands of victims, and only a small fraction report it to the FTC. If this happens to you, please report it at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.

I've been getting messages from a man who says he's stationed in Norway but will be coming home to Kansas City in April. He's handsome and says he's an engineer but I never let it get any further than that. He asked if we could communicated by email instead of POF which made no sense to me. He still sends me messages from time to time but I just ignore them. I get messages like this about once a week.....

This gent started talking to me as a surgeon who was from Maryland. He went to school in Belgium but originally told me he was from Aberdeen Scotland where his dad was an engineer. He said he had been working with Doctors Without Borders for thirty years. He had pictures of a doctor, family. He had three kids in picture but mentioned he lost a son at age 25. He had a daughter in grade 9, he never mentioned extra teen. His name is Dr Lawson Matt and said he graduated from Harvard. Well I did several searches at Harvard alumni)medical and Doctors Without Borders. No name. Plus his language was not grammatically correct for one of such intelligence. He was snappy with sending YouTube music, however . I never left instragram. Yes his pictures were quite handsome and I could tell he lied about his age. Oh there is a Dr Matt Larson in Florida, So watch out for a wonderful grin with the IQ like his picture with a stuffed panda Oh he is in Syria for two more years....as a surgeon

Why would anyone trust a stranger with 2 mill and a lot of bar gold. Why would he trust you to keep it safe for him? You guys have never met right?? I was scammed like this years ago when I was 17. I knew then it wasn't right but was "in love" Never again!! You need to drop this guy like a hot potato and don't look back. That or just play with him for a little bit. Only living relative in the US took him in and raised him but he died too. No living relatives. Am the only on he has in this world, very smooth. I would get an email and songs everyday. He's in love with me after 4 weeks. Because the action in Syria is so bad, he wants to send me some of his valuable papers, medals, awards and whatnot. But the UN Mail Man (Jason) a personal close friend is stop at customs in Ghana and needs $9,480 to get this box cleared or it will be confiscated. Says he works for the UN in Syria as an electrical engineer. Is a widowm. Wife died of cancer. English is his second language and Spanish his first. Has two children a girl and boy. Sent me a few pics of him and them. Said he doesn't want me to share with anyone because he is a private person. Quotes scripture easily. Says he was orphaned at the age of 11 and then changed it to 18. Was raised by the Catholic church. Yeah don't be fooled. I wasn't. I was waiting for him to ask for money. REPORT A SCAMMERS!!!!

Hi! I also have a guy that says he's a Chief Engineer on a BP oil rig platform " Atlantis" 180 miles in the gulf of New Orleans. He's a smooth talker and he drew me in. Since I was talking to him for 4 months I believed him. He said he was a widow and so am I so I thought we had a lot in common. Then he started asking for Amazon gift cards, then he came up with a story of...how he was contracted to BP that if any kind of equipment breakdown...that he was personally responsible for and he would be sued for 1.1 million $$. He ask if I could rent a chopper to get him off the platform to be able to go to his bank to access funds so he could pay for repairs. It would cost like $12,000 for the chopper. He said as soon as he gets to his bank he will transfer the money right back to my account. Im sure he's trying to scam me! How do I do a Google search with his picture?
