Your Social Security number is an important key for an identity thief. Scammers want it, and they think of all sorts of ways to trick you into giving it away.

Here at the Federal Trade Commission, we’re getting reports about calls from scammers claiming to be from the Social Security Administration. They say there’s been a computer problem, and they need to confirm your Social Security number.

Other people have told us that they have come across spoof websites that look like the place where you would apply for a new Social Security card – but these websites are actually a setup to steal your personal information.

If you get a phone call or are directed to a website other than ssa.gov that is claiming to be associated with the Social Security Administration, don’t respond. It’s most likely a scam.

Here’s some tips to deal with these government imposters:

  • Don’t give the caller your information. Never give out or confirm sensitive information – like your bank account, credit card, or Social Security number – unless you know who you’re dealing with. If someone has contacted you, you can’t be sure who they are.
  • Don’t trust a name or number. Con artists use official-sounding names to make you trust them. To make their call seem legitimate, scammers use internet technology to spoof their area code – so although it may seem they are calling from Washington, DC, they could be calling from anywhere in the world.
  • Check with the Social Security Administration. The SSA has a warning about these scams and suggests you contact them directly at 1-800-772-1213 to verify the reason for the contact and the person’s identity prior to providing any information to the caller.

If you come across one of these scams, please report it to the Social Security Administration’s Fraud Hotline at 1-800-269-0271, or 1-866-501-2101(TTY), and then tell the FTC about it.

I just received a phone call from an unknown number . When i answered a message machine answered and stated that i had a warrant out for my arrest due to social security fraud. They asked me to press 1 to speak to an agent. I did out of curiosity they asked for my name and number. I informed them that they were the ones who called me tell me I had a warrant for my arrest, how do you not know who you are calling? I asked him for his name, he replied Edward Ryan he gave me his "badge number to tell me he was legit." He even gave me my case file number and 4086466191 number to reach him at. Once i started questioning him he hung up. This is ridiculous.

Officer Kelly called me today from a Maryland number. I received the same robo message and was instructed to call back. i hate these people. they called around 11 AM CST. it was the same message as some of the other people got. You know, these scammers are not only fraudulent, they are a harrassment. Please catch them. I'm so tired of these calls. Dear scammers, please don't ever call me again, or I will try to have you quickly arrested. I'm not even a police-orientated person, but I'm not playing around. You ruined my already stressful morning, and I hope you pay for all your scams and harassment! I don't care what fake internet number service or callback numbers you are using. Bless you all. I mean it. Please, scammers, quit what you're doing immediately and get real jobs. You should have to operate a tech support center to pay for all the inconveniences you caused to your victims. Also, please stop taking advantage of foreign labor. Thanks. I get your social security calls all the time. You threaten me! Stop living off other people and thinking it is gain. I really HATE these scam calls. Officer Kelly, you're like the queen of spades in another player's hand, you rummies. CEASE CALLING ME, IMMEDIATELY. THANK YOU! If you even have my social security number, you have already probably committed a crime. LEAVE ME ALONE. THANKS. :)

I just got a call from the social security "office" number 877-348-7549 claiming that there was fraudulent activity with my SS. They asked to press 1 if I wanted to be passed to an officer. When I pressed 1 an indian male with a really thick accent answered and said that there was suspicious activity with SS. He said that there was a stolen car found in texas with over 2 pound of COCAINE! He kept asking me to verify that this wasnt me and asked me for what bank accounts I have. I thought it was real! He asked me for some personal information but I then realized it was a scam when we started freaking out when I wanted to call him back . Could they do much if they know what banks I have my account with & the last 4 digits of my social? I didn't tell them anything else.
