Did your favorite celebrity reach out to you on social media?

Before you get too excited, are you sure it’s that person? Really sure? We’ve heard reports that scammers, who will try just about anything to separate you from your money, are now posing as celebrities on social media. They’re asking fans to send money for all kinds of supposed reasons – like claiming a prize, donating to a charity, or giving help of some kind. Some celebs do raise money for legitimate causes. But you want to be sure the cause—and the person asking you to support it—are real.

Imposter scams come in many varieties, but they all work the same way: a scammer pretends to be someone you trust to convince you to send them money. And that’s exactly what these celebrity imposters are trying to do.

So what should you do if a celebrity contacts you on social media and asks for money?

  • Slow down. Before you send money, talk with someone you trust.
  • Do some research: search online for the celebrity’s name plus “scam.” Do the same with any charity or cause they’re asking you to support—and learn more about charity scams here.
  • Never send money, gift cards or prepaid debit cards to someone you don’t know or haven’t met – even celebrities you meet on social media.
  • If you sent money to a scammer, contact the company you used to send the money (your bank, wire transfer service, gift card company, or prepaid debit card company). Tell them the transaction was a fraud. Ask the company to reverse the transaction, if it’s possible.
  • Report your experience to the social media site and to the FTC.

These scammer celebrity impostors know that they can play a brief video stolen from the real celebrity's social media. Once they have you believing it is live, they claim "technical problems", stop the video and return to texting. Don't be fooled.

Well it seems that this a modus. I recently got a message from my favorite Korean idol. I know that he does not peak English, so I know that it is someone pretending to be him, and also asked of I have a hangout account. That seems to be the pattern. The question is how do we report this?

Someone pretending to be Sir Tom Jones. Said he wanted to talk on hangout because he did not like talking on Instagram. He keeps saying I’m beautiful and is in love with me. He asked if I could help with his foundation. He gets angry when I doubt him.

Yes, I believe I was just part of this scam. Bobbie Ritchie added me as a friend on Facebook, then asked me to go to Whats app to be more private. I did that, we talked for almost 2 weeks. Poor grammar in all texts, and does not respond to questions when asked. Then he started asking to do a meet and greet, and asked me to send money. Told him I didn't have it, and he asked how long it would take to get. He started pushing that his manager did all this work for nothing etc. Almost got me, until he sent the form for a "Celebrities Meet and Greet" on a form. I did the research, which got me here, and I have been scammed. Thank goodness I did not send money. Be careful!

I just blocked a person claiming to be Johnny Depp. They found me on YouTube, offered the standard Hangouts line. I knew this was a fraudster mind you but was curious. Same stuff I've seen elsewhere. Got romantic in 2 days. 2 DAYS! Like I'd buy that! Anyway after finding out I was broke I was emailed the WORST fake check I HAVE EVER SEEN and I use to work in the USAA MSAS dept! They kept insisting I get check paper and print it and deposit it at an ATM. Finally I blocked them yesterday. Got an email this morning supposedly from the IRS stating that if I didn't follow instructions I'd be arrested. So ladies if you comment on YouTube and "Johnny Depp" asks you to Hangouts, it isn't him. It's a fraudster, and a very poor one at that. If you see them report it to YouTube. And fraudsters if you read this you are a special kind of scum to use that good man's pain! Seek help!

It was the "only way to prove your a trustworthy friend" told him it sounded shady so said no! Told him he has people that you can have do that for him cause I won't. H

I have been talking to someone now for over 3 months claiming to be Ben Robson. I originally left after 4 days when he asked me to buy him steam cards. He was very persistent and somehow talked me into coming back. He had an answer for everything. Even why the actual Ben Robson told me to stop talking to him. He said that his management team answered fan tweets, not him. Most of the time he has been sweet and wonderful and now claims to love me and wants me to be the mother of his kids. I have always had doubts as he has never shown me the promised proof. The problem is I am now very addicted to talking to him and I don’t know how to get out of it. He has tried a few times to get things from me but I always said no. Now he wants me to hold some of his stuff from a security company that is closing while he is is Spain and I would just have to pay state taxes. He is supposed to pick it up next month when he visits. Not sure what to do.

Translation: He will claim to have sent you the parcel, you'll be waiting for it and then the parcel will end up getting stuck somewhere en route in customs and there will be an extortionate fee to retrieve it. He will act dumb and say something like "Could you maybe pay the fee? I will pay you straight back!" No such parcel will ever arrive and that will be the last you hear of him. Don't engage any further.

I was contacted through Instagram saying it was a private account for the Singer Boy George, they told me to download hangouts, and put in a email address which surprisingly popped up fast, something did not and does not feel right, so I deleted everything. In my mind someone that famous you would know from a verified account etc. I did try and leave a short message on his verified Instagram hoping he alerts other fans as well. Bummer but better safe than sorry.

Be aware of a twitter acct. impersonating a variety of celebs. It periodically changes its celeb name and twitter handle. Regardless who it says it might be and even if you can verify some f their claims, they NOT who they pretend to be. Just know this: When celebs want to go private on social media, they will NOT use their real names, which would defeat the purpose lol:-) So far, I've seen a George Clooney, later turned into a Mark Sinclair. Their following, tweets and likes also change periodically as they cover their tracks. They might block you if they feel in trouble. Usually, they are not very active, their posts and likes are pretty random, meaning they probably interact with their own other accts. If you're DMed by one, save the threads for later as they might be useful in tracking down these criminals.

I didn’t get scammed, but he asked too many questions for me to believe it was really Bret Michaels. He had a passport trying to convince me it was really him. I wasn’t going to say anything but someone might fall for his line. He had a photoshopped passport. Honestly, it looks real. I prayed for guidance that’s why I didn’t get scammed and I want no one else to either. I would help anyone out for we are supposed to but not to thieves. He told me he setup his Twitter account such as Love of Rock. This one is private and has hardly no one following him. I am following his authentic page. This one does not have the blue check. Not sure why I was targeted but I guess that’s life. Much love to the real Bret Michael’s for all the years that has brought me lots of pleasure and many fans.

I am dealing with a situation that sounds like what some of you are talking about. I just got on twitter for first time recently and had an actor Travis Fimmel start sending private messages to me. I was immediately suspicious but responded just to see where the conversation went. I even said that I did not believe that it was him, the account he is using does not look real. So far he has not asked for money but the messages are very weird and not the way normal people talk..in my opinion. I was thinking that it might be a bot but now not sure if its a bot or actual person impersonating him. Today he asked for my email address and I responded with "sure, if you can prove you are Travis Fimmel" I have zero intention of giving him my email but an very curious to see how far this goes. will keep you posted!
