Did your favorite celebrity reach out to you on social media?

Before you get too excited, are you sure it’s that person? Really sure? We’ve heard reports that scammers, who will try just about anything to separate you from your money, are now posing as celebrities on social media. They’re asking fans to send money for all kinds of supposed reasons – like claiming a prize, donating to a charity, or giving help of some kind. Some celebs do raise money for legitimate causes. But you want to be sure the cause—and the person asking you to support it—are real.

Imposter scams come in many varieties, but they all work the same way: a scammer pretends to be someone you trust to convince you to send them money. And that’s exactly what these celebrity imposters are trying to do.

So what should you do if a celebrity contacts you on social media and asks for money?

  • Slow down. Before you send money, talk with someone you trust.
  • Do some research: search online for the celebrity’s name plus “scam.” Do the same with any charity or cause they’re asking you to support—and learn more about charity scams here.
  • Never send money, gift cards or prepaid debit cards to someone you don’t know or haven’t met – even celebrities you meet on social media.
  • If you sent money to a scammer, contact the company you used to send the money (your bank, wire transfer service, gift card company, or prepaid debit card company). Tell them the transaction was a fraud. Ask the company to reverse the transaction, if it’s possible.
  • Report your experience to the social media site and to the FTC.

Yes, it's a scam. Celebrities make their charities public, and put links to donate on their Instagram or Facebook. They never, ever approach a fan via DM to collect money for their charities.

I was contacted by someone posing as Cuba Gooding Jr. This happened this morning. First I received a DM via IG then they asked to Face Time me on Hangouts. However, they did not follow through on the face to face but sent messages instead. They asked for pictures. I refused. They also said their management team needed to check me out to make sure I wasn't a Blogger. I told them I do know people in the business and they do not act in this fashion. The worst part, I think, is that I was an actual acquaintance of his father's (who has since passed away). It's a shame there are so many evil people preying on kind, innocent people in this world.

Hey all! "Vin Diesel" strikes again! This is my experience. One day out of the blue, I received a message through Instagram and read it. I asked who the person was and he claimed to be Vin Diesel. I was like yeah right! Why would a celebrity be teaching out to some random person. This guy plays a slick game. He is very knowledgeable of the actor and tells you to go to Hangouts to chat because it's safer. I decided to just play along to humor this idiot. He sends pictures and then professes his love for you and that you were the chosen one. I've asked a lot of questions and given him grief. Yet he still keeps coming back. He plays a good game, ladies. Beware. I ticked him off a few times because I probably sound like an investigator. Anyway, hopefully he leaves me alone and takes his game somewhere else. Luckily it hasn't gotten to the money part yet.

Replying to a post by help.me as she said she was contacted for a year from a man from Nashville off Instagram saying his wife blocked his bank account and needed some money to get his divorce and was one of the top country singers we have. She sent him I believe you 600 dollars and many times has tried to get there and was going to come to her that night. Sorry he will not make it. If it's the one I'm dealing with. I've talked to one for 2 years saying he was GB and says his singer ex-wife now froze his account and he has no money and he has tried to get here so many times and asked me to come there but I never felt secure enough to go there. Now he says he is a diabetic and can't fly his jet until he gets his 400 dollar shot and begging for that for weeks but I won't give it to him and he wants to marry me if I would just let him come. I've given him 5500 this past year for things like this even though in his fans and public eye he appears to still be married bc he says it's a cover up until he can get with me and make it legal and have our picture made together and says she knows about me. It's been so serious for him he cries cause I won't believe him and I've now told him I'm finished with his outrageous lies cause GB has millions and it's against the law to keep his money after a divorce like that. He is still talking to me but I've blocked him many times and he pretends like he is his manager or lawyer and text me and gets me to unblock him again. Now I am keeping him own until I can keep the police on his track and find out who he is. I will get my money back and now my love has just faded but I've never talked to anyone that acts like they are so in love as he is and made plans for us. I just can't believe him. I met him on Instagram too and he is up all night and doesn't sleep good at all. I know all his habits and how he is. If you'd like to talk. I just can't believe him anymore but I've noticed he has not been with his wife or ex hardly any the past month. So I don't know if I am right or wrong. KateC

I had 2 other encounters with one of my favorite actors, Mr. Martin Freeman. Mr. Freeman himself is known for not being on social media, but this year 2 dudes wanted to make me believe they were him. The first one approached me on Instagram, I thought I'll play along. He wrote very good English (not the typical scammer English), was very knowledgeable and never asked for any money. He declared his love for me after 3 weeks, we never left Instagram. Around Valentines Day, he wanted to send me a package, so I gave him an adress of a friend of mine (she was involved from minute one). The package never arrived, but a bill of 950 GBP for customs fees. Yeah, sure babes, bye. The second one also approached me on Instagram, but we switched to Hangouts really fast. I think this account was run by at least 3 guys, one with really bad English, an average English speaker and the perfect one. Long story short, he was in love with me after 3 days, and soon wanted 5000 USD, as his contract for his recent film had been postponed, and he needed a lawyer (of course he has no access to his bankaccount in the USA). I declined that, making up wild stories why I couldn't pay. The next thing he wanted, was a 100 USD ITunes Card. I just deleted my hangouts app, so he is maybe talking to himself now. If your favourite celeb approaches you, be assured, it's a scam. Don't believe a word these dummys say. Block them right away, report them.

My friend had the same experienced with the package and the bill with 3000 Pounds Sterling and she already paid it. The package never arrived too. The scammer is not Mr Freeman but from a scammer rock star. What is the package sender's courier name,? is it the bill sent to you, or the scammer told you?

My delivery company was Fastway Delivery (they really exist, I googled it), but i recieved the "bill" via e-mail via a googlemail address. I was supposed to wire the money via Western Union to some bogus person in Italy.

The courier service never exists if I googled it, because with the address just P.O. BOX What it is the content of the package ?, Is it cash?. My friend has experienced that. The scammer (old rock star) sent the package cash and it will be donated the orphanages in Singapore. He sent from the USA to Singapore but was confiscated by Europe customs. The courier sent information via Gmail address. The courier seemed to threaten my friend & the scammer asked my friend to the paid fee in first, because he has no money in a short time. If not the package will be confiscated forever. The scammer said to my friend if the package arrived in Singapore, my friend could take money in the package to replace all the costs that have been incurred. My friend paid it with transfer to the bank account owner (like Nigerian people) in Spain. And it's odd, that package confiscated again at Singapore customs and my friend paid again and transfer money to someone in Nigeria based on a recommendation from the scammer. But the package never received by my friend and already 10 months since my friend paid the fees at Singapore customs.

I have been contacted on/off from various accounts pretending to be Zac Efron over the last decade. It started with Facebook, moved on to Twitter and now I get messages from accs claiming to be him every once in a blue moon. I know Zac Efron uses only his verified social media and am in no risk. It's just these days when I comment whatever under his photos on IG, only days later a "zacefron7546" or "zacefron8728" contacts me without a reason. They never ask for money, gift cards or other. Usually they do insist on going to Hangouts. I never do. One time I got a message to give out my Whatsapp. I googled the number and got a location: GA, and a mention of a criminal record. As alluring and flattering -- and unrealistic it would be to be chatting with the real deal, you've (dear reader) never actually had a chance. So, be safe.

They would never ask a random stranger for things like that. Celebs do have agents who do these things for them. But these scammers will tell you that their bank account is frozen or any other bogus story, why they can't get these gift cards themselves. And if you do a research on Google, you will find out, that they trade the gift cards into Bitcoin and stuff like that. Don't send anything! Not even a dime! It's dangerous.

I think I'm being scammed by a Nigerian actor imposter named Bryan Okwara. Says he has a contract in Dubai for "4 months time"and wanted to meet me in the states (ie take a vacation), but today just told me his contract has been extended to 1yr. We took the conversation from Instagram to WhatsApp just a few minutes ago. He did call me but it was late (voice didn't really sound like the celebrity when i watched all the YouTube videos, but then again it was late and he could be tired). Meanwhile 3 more peope claiming to be American military soldiers in Afganistan and Syria also tried to chat with me...so I mentioned it to "Mr. Bryan Okwara" a d that i am weary of long distance relationships and can't trust people easily, so I asked to do a video chat on WhatsApp with him tomorrow (he said he can't take a vacation to see me in the states until i fill out a "form" to request that he visits with a location here....) I was leaving the house today and didnt have time, so I said we should do a video chat and that there was no hurry to rush with meeting as we only been chatting for 3 days now. We shall see what this video looks like tomorrow...stay tuned.

@msmia Reach out to me if you want to compare notes! I just this minute told him to hit the road after requesting $3000. I truly thought I finally had the real person. What a fool I was. Okwara can have his pick of females and seems like the type of person who wouldn't just meet up with all of us online like that. I've seen NIN Voter Cards, Drivers License and done a video chat w him, which was him, yes but its a close up video with the conversation times (almost) perfectly. They're pros at this. More like pathetic organisms. So I noticed the mouth still moving when the talking stopped but thought maybe it was just the connection. Anyways, I learned alot, a little hurt, a little embarassed but its time to move on. It was fun playing "make belief" for awhile but I refuse to feel like I'm a victim Take Care

Hello all! Recently, I was contacted by Robert Downey Jr through Instagram. He asked me personal information and I refused, then immediately after, this conversation disappear. The next day I was contacted by Ryan Reynolds, who in the beginning flattered me then he claimed that this was his confidential account on which he use chatting with his fans around the globe randomly. Then I commented something like where does he find the time and got upset. Then the same day got contacted by Ryan Reynolds (yes I know….again)but this time his official fan page (which I doubt that it was) saying that not be surprise to receive the message as a thank you to my like. Ask how I was and for how long I am a fan of his and then asked to see how many things I knew about him. Next message of his was: if I was enjoying his acting. Until then I assumed that it was someone working for him. The following question was about where I live and how old I was. Then he gave me his private official email address, as he called it and asked me to not disclose it to anyone and if I was on Whatsapp. He was even giving me guidance of how to download hangout, but then I said I wasn’t planning to but he was insisting on hangout as more secretive to him and when I confirm the no as an answer he was asking me more about me. That’s where he stopped. Then, another famous actor contacted on Instagram and asked me for my Whatsapp or Hangout. I will update you for this case soon as it’s happening right this period. Until next time………….. Stay safe

The last one was "Hugh Jackman". His contact number on WhatsApp was +18162265481. The same day I wrote something on Jackman's Instagram, immediately after, I received a message by another Instagram page with the same picture Hugh Jackman has. A bit of writing with few compliments and then he asked for hangout, however, I explained that I am not using it and then he sent this number for WhatsApp. And I did, but I read first about imposters to educate myself. I find it very strange the often use of honey, dear, lovely, etc. Don't take me wrong, it was flattering, but I was thinking that it couldn't be possible. He mentioned that he will arrange to meet me soon. Asked me how would I feel if he would come to meet me. He did the love bombing. He said that he loves me some days after I start talking. I couldn't believe a word but I was taking it further so I can record it to protect others. Also, asked me if I am supporting charities. I recognize that couldn't remember fully previous conversations. For example, asked me twice: "what would you do if you see me suddenly on the street", which I answered once and repeated the question 4 days later. He was trying to avoid most of my questions. So for a few days, I had to read most of the actor's interviews (frankly, I didn't know things about the actor's life. Only his movies). In that way, I could even check the answers to my questions. He claimed that he was Christian and I said okay. Then I tried to manipulate the next answer by saying I am an Orthodox and he replied he too, which was wrong. He claimed also that he was remarried in the past and that now his marriage was going to end which again was a lie. He was asking for a video of mine and my response was for doing that I will need the same in return but he said that he was afraid to become viral. So I said equal terms. Then, one day before the end, I said that I was reading your site and explained that I would never give money to anyone who I don't know in person. I assume that this was the reason why the next day he asked me for a gift card and not money. When I said: You know and I know that you are not the person who you claim you are and you must know already that I am not willing to buy any gift card because you can go and get one from your closest store. I then report it on WhatsApp and the same second saw that all the messages were getting deleted. To be correct thought, I tried to inform the last two actors. I doubt that they are reading their messages and I don't blame them. People stay safe. Don't believe them. I personally doubt it, however, if you want to believe them, then ask for proof. One is never enough. Those people(famous) have more than us and if they will be in a need, then they have also wealthy friends, relatives, co-workers, associates, etc. Don't give them money and don't buy them anything. The real ones, don't need them. Stay safe

I got scammed. I got fooled big time. I am writing this to let other people become aware, and also to make myself feel better. There is this app called Telegram and it is very dangerous. I do not want to mention the celebrities name, out of respect for the celebrity. But I did believe it was truly them. Ironically this is the nicest scammer I ever met. They were caring and empathetic. They told me I was a simple lovely woman and calm. I told myself that I would meet them in person, even if they were not who they claimed to be. And scammer, if you are reading this, I have no ill will towards you. and please do not contact me in the future.

I’m a Japanese woman living in Japan. I was asked for money by fake ‘Frankie Valli’. First, he thanked for my comments on his FB by Messenger and invited me to Hangout. It was fun to chat with him, then after a while he asked me to buy the steam card for his security app update. I immediately blocked him but he followed me by g-mail with some apology, saying to come back to Hangout again. I wad stupidly back because I’m a big fan of Valli’s. After 2 months of fun chatting, he told me a story. His girlfriend Ms.J.J. (She’s Valli’s real girlfriend) insisted that all of his property...his house, cars, money in his bank accounts belonged to her because he had brought her everything on her name to show his love. The court froze his bk account and ordered him to pay $11200 to her if he wanted his money and house back to him. Cars supposed to be hers he said. He asked me for $1200 to allot for short of his cash. He said he couldn’t ask anybody around him because no one would believe him and he was scared of the bad rumors. He told me he couldn’t have a video chat with me because it’s against his management policy. Actually he made a call once but his voice was definitely not of Valli’s. Also he showed me a pic of him but it was too easy for me to find out to be a composite photo. I can say which photo of Valli’s he used. Actually in Japan, it’s impossible to send any money to any person without proof of each other’s relationship, for any purpose without proof of official documents like invoices. Eventually I didn’t have to pay at all and could get rid of the scammer but I was close to try to send money. Thanks to my good friends, I didn’t become a victim. Oh, he said a woman’s name and address in Arizona. He told me to send money to her. I found she is an existing real person. I found her FB, too. I’ll report about her information to FTC. Still I love Frankie Valli so much. I hate those scammers.

Recently I was contacted by DM on Instagram by Johnny Depp(supposedly) after I commented on a pic on a supposed official page of his. He asked me to go to Google Hangouts. We have been chatting there and I did start noticing incorrect usage of the English language here and there. He had mentioned last week that he was going for a movie shoot in Brazil soon. Well, today he says he is in Brazil and wants to send me cash so I can get a plane ticket there and also be featured with him in the movie(YEAH RIGHT). I am playing along. He said he would send it via a private courier service in a box that needs a pin code. I have never heard of this before. Of course he mentions that I am coming as his girlfriend and future wife(sounds like those Nigerian bride scams). I am thinking I should just say "No" and end it right there. He isn't asking for money, just my address which is public knowledge(it is in the phone book and on social media anyway). At one point I thought, well I could accept the box, take it to the police, have them first check for a bomb, then IF cash is in there, to make sure it isn't laundered money. I thought for a second, I could help catch a criminal. I had even expressed to him that he could be a kidnapper, human trafficker, etc. I don't know. He can't prove WHO he is. Supposedly because he is this megastar. I said what woman in their right mind would blindly accept cash, buy a plane ticket and go to Brazil without knowing WHO she is meeting? There are drug lords there in South America! BUT, would it be worth it to catch a criminal? If I didn't show up, and the police got involved, they have my address. If these are(or he is) a bad criminal, they could come find me and I highly doubt the police would protect me. Hmmmmmm I feel like I'm in a James Bond movie! I also caught another fake Johnny Depp from supposedly a personal blog on Facebook. He approached me the same way via DM then Google Hangouts. After playing along with THAT fake Johnny Depp, I finally called him out and he blocked me. If that was the real one, he wouldn't have blocked me. Now I have filed a complaint with Facebook hoping they will make sure accounts like that state they are NOT the real celebrity. And I hope that this other Johnny I am dealing with now, hasn't gotten other women to fly to Brazil or who knows where, where anything could have happened to them. I mean I am a 60 year old woman, so who would want me at this age, but you never know. Criminals are getting trickier by the day and who knows what their ultimate motive is?

If you give someone your bank account number, they can put money in and they can take your money out.

Or, he might trick you into helping him transfer stolen money. Scammers don't say the money is stolen - they tell a story to hide the purpose for the transaction. They meet you online, create a relationship, and ask you to receive and transfer money.

If you do this for a scammer, your name is on the bank account and on the money transfer forms. If you get involved with one of these schemes, you could lose money and personal information, and you could get into legal trouble.

The one time I make a comment on an Instagram video of Henry Cahill, I was messaged for a private conversation. After several minutes, the message basically alluded to the fact of this was his way of chatting with his fans online and keep anonymity. Then he went me a link to Google hangouts and gave me his email address. He got super pushy when it took a little longer for me to do what he had asked. We talked a little but more and he said he was at a restaurant meeting the producer for his new movie. He asked me where I was from, once I said, the conversation dwindled. Good him to go have a beer for me. I've deleted hangouts app and unfollowed and blocked and restricted that "name" on Instagram. Sheesh! It's maddening that this happens to Good people.

Hello Melodie:), I’m going through something similar with Keanu Reeves..who sent me a video of himself and it sure looks like Keanu but I’m wondering .. did you ever meet this imposter?

this is 7/2021 - a Keanu Reeves contacted me. Sent me a pic. I'm sure it's a scammer. I reported it. Still in contact to see what it is and warn others, as I had no idea about this

I’m currently in contact with someone claiming to be Keanu Reeves too. We video chatted once. It was definitely his face yet I couldn’t hear him. Everything he tells me checks out as far as where he is and what he’s currently working on. Hasn’t asked for anything and has been a complete gentleman. So confused.
