Did your favorite celebrity reach out to you on social media?

Before you get too excited, are you sure it’s that person? Really sure? We’ve heard reports that scammers, who will try just about anything to separate you from your money, are now posing as celebrities on social media. They’re asking fans to send money for all kinds of supposed reasons – like claiming a prize, donating to a charity, or giving help of some kind. Some celebs do raise money for legitimate causes. But you want to be sure the cause—and the person asking you to support it—are real.

Imposter scams come in many varieties, but they all work the same way: a scammer pretends to be someone you trust to convince you to send them money. And that’s exactly what these celebrity imposters are trying to do.

So what should you do if a celebrity contacts you on social media and asks for money?

  • Slow down. Before you send money, talk with someone you trust.
  • Do some research: search online for the celebrity’s name plus “scam.” Do the same with any charity or cause they’re asking you to support—and learn more about charity scams here.
  • Never send money, gift cards or prepaid debit cards to someone you don’t know or haven’t met – even celebrities you meet on social media.
  • If you sent money to a scammer, contact the company you used to send the money (your bank, wire transfer service, gift card company, or prepaid debit card company). Tell them the transaction was a fraud. Ask the company to reverse the transaction, if it’s possible.
  • Report your experience to the social media site and to the FTC.

I am in the process right now of being scammed by someone posing to be Fred Hammond. Asking me to go and purchase a card a fan ID card for $200. He's asking me 2 go to Walmart and purchase a Walmart card he's very persistent became very upset when I blocked him on Hangout stating that once I purchase the fan ID card I'd be able to see him in concert really soon. A concert that's going to be in my location really soon that his management team waiting to process this card

I've had Instagram for maybe 5 or 6 years now. I've been hit by celebrity scammers a lot in the past. I don't know if it's several scammers or one dude that keeps coming back to me time and time again. Persistent guy whoever he is. Sorta tries the love bomb stuff. I'm in my 40s and plus size so I highly highly doubt that any of these contacts have been the real deal. They keep coming around again and again and I don't hand out money except for one time when I just felt sorry for the scammer for getting rejected over and over again. Seriously, I can't believe I felt sorry for a scammer! I gave him a gift card and hoped he'd go away forever but he came back again this week. The scammer always uses the word "dear" and the wording is off, like he is not a native speaker. I've been hit up by LDC, Brad Pitt, Matthew McConaughey, Neil Patrick Harris, and hmmm.....oh, Keanu Reeves. Each time I know in my heart that it's a scammer but I play along for a little bit because I don't want to make a legit celeb mad at me....on that off 1% chance out of a 100. I wish it would just stop cause it is starting to frustrate me. I keep blocking but somehow a new account or new scammer always pops up about 3 to 6 months down the road.

On Pierce Brosnan's FB page for "Pierce Brosnan is the Best James Bond" it was said that you could message him on "Pierce Brosnan Page" On Tuesday last week I sent a message and within an hour I received a reply. Several messages went back and forth between us at times of the day when I thought he would be asleep as he lives in Hawaii which didn't seem right. He also asked me to use Hangout due to security reasons and is claiming to be the real Pierce Brosnan. Has anyone else had any experience of this? I have my doubts but would like to hear of anyone else that might have been "chatting".

So I've been hit up twice with different fake celebrities when was Jessica Alba and the other was Jennifer Lawrence. Both wanted to use Hangouts both told me to tell no one and be real secretive about it and the reason they couldn't send me proved or selfie or video was because they had restrictions. So watch out for those they hit me up on Instagram.

Question : When the Scammer’s mentioned, first send a picture of the celebrities passport, did they preface it by saying something to the effect of “if I send you a picture of my passport we promise not to share my information with anybody etc ?” I’d like to know because I think We attempting to scam me by posing as Josh Groban, starting last night 7/13.

I was talking to Adam Lambert... I swore it was him...He made himself sound so real! He even said that he only says he's gay just to promote himself. It was like the biggest romance scam and I was just to blind to see that it was a scam the whole time. He put money in my account and he said he was hopping on the next plane over to see me. Dang I was so freaking excited!!! He said his bank was frozen and that he needed me to get some cards for him so that he can turn it into cash. I agreed with it. My bank called me to get my bum over there. He was begging me for the codes. I was so broken. I'm glad I didn't give him the codes before i talked to my bank. He completely hacked into my account and gave them pictures of fake checks. So I had to change all of my bank info. I was so stoked on him coming and everything... Those scammers are really amazing actors and they make you feel amazing about yourself. Now I feel dumb and naïve and not to mention a bit heart broken.

I have a guy I am chatting with on hangout, he claims to be Keanu Reeves, very polite, charming, he told me he loves me...lol. I know he is an impostor, but he claims he isn't, he offered me money for now. I am just waiting for him to ask me for money, just a matter of time, I know Keanu isn't on social media at all, or chat with fans as well like most celebrities do and, there are a lot others as well claiming to be Keanu as well, can't something be done about this to stop these impostors?

I got a person saying he's Chris Brown. Talking about I need to send 1,000 dollars so I can meet him in person to come to New York. Saying his bank is blocked and got no access to money. We never FaceTime or phone call. He said it was his crew boy that called my phone. He mostly talks to me on Google hangouts. This is sad that people would use anyone for their money. But not me. My friend has been targeted by someone claiming to be Adam Lambert - complete with lovey dovey talk, the whole works. When he showed it to me it screamed SCAM. 'Adam' has since asked for his bank info so he can secretly cash a donation check that a fan sent him, which was an obvious NO, then tried to get my friend to give up his phone company info so Adam could have some phones ordered and delivered to him just for 'them' to use... The real deals work so hard, busting their bodies and giving up their time and energy for their careers; they deserve better than this. Darn scammers!!! I told my friend to report it to the police and to block 'Adam' immediately - change his email/Hangouts/Social network connections if necessary.

I had made a comment on a post from a favorite songwriter. When I checked my notifications. This person had liked my comment. When I checked it out. He(the celebrity) had directed me to private message him. I was excited. He thought I was an interesting person. I’m not a young girl. I know better. But he was so interesting. We also had the same birthday. These messages lasted about a week. Then he asked me for a gold watch for his birthday. That was it. I called him a scammer. I tried to report him, thought I did. But something came up that said there was no need to report again. I let him know that a real celebrity would never ask for a gift. What is really bothersome is the photo of the celebrity at the top of the page had the check mark. How could that person get a check mark? I also noticed that with the icons on the bottom of the page next to where you write your message. A Big blue $ sign. I got out of that one. But I’m really ticked off…. Besides feeling very stupid!!

There's a Adam demos fake out there on Facebook. I contacted him. He replied. We talked for ages he wanted my phone number and my email because Facebook had too much traffic. The next day he texted me and emailed me. We texted back and forth for ages. Then he suggest we chat on Google chat app. I know his cousin. Now here is the red flag. I gave him all these clues to guess her name. He couldn't. He sent me photos I've already seen online. Making out he just sent them. Now I'm checking my bank account every day. Making sure I wasn't scammed as Google says scammers only need your phone number and email address to ruin your life. So far do good. Hopefully he was the type of scammer to get close to me and ask for money Didn't get that far.

I had a previous scam attempt from someone pretending he was the Korean celebrity Lee Min Ho's manger. Asked me to use a hangout address to speak directly with the actor. Seemed that the actor didn't know basic Korean when I tried writing to him lol. And I had another scam from Instagram from someone pretending he is the famous kpop star from BTS band, Jin. Again talking to him on hangouts and after a week of sweet talking, he was asking me to pay some fee to become an agent for his recruitment agency, so I can meet BTS in real or have access to VIP tickets. My point is, even if I'm a pretty person, I understand a celebrity with million of fans wouldn't pick me as date all the sudden. Most scams I encountered happened on social media and then they were asking private chat on Hangouts. Run away if they only want to use Hangouts. Last, no celebrity will personally ask you money form some shady account. Last, please think again, even if you are the most beautiful , most kind person on this planet, why all the sudden , a celebrity would want to talk to you or meet you. Stay safe people, don't give money away or personal infos. Report them if you can or when you can!

Ok, I'm reading all of these and have to ask some questions. Yes, I'm talking to someone, appearing to be a Celebrity. Does anyone else have the following happen to them: Sends me flowers, sent a magazine subscription, has created a special YouTube playlist of songs.... Yes, he has asked for money to set a meet and greet but retracted, and paid for it himself..but no meeting has been set. Does anyone this sound like anyone your talking to? Please let me know, because I cannot believe this is who they say they are...at all! No pictures, no videos, no google hangouts....I'm concerned! Help!

I have been contacted by no less than six different 'Hugh Jackman' scammers over the last few months... I don't fall for any of them quite frankly. One asked me for a pre-paid Visa so he could get a script rushed to him in a hurry; Another said he was getting divorced and his account was frozen; Another wanted me to inquire to his 'booking manager' and pay money to have him 'come and visit me' because I 'intrigued him' and he'd 'reimburse me'... One got nasty when I wouldn't send money to support his charity. It's ridiculous.... Instagram and other Social Media sites do little or nothing to control this, even when you report it. My ministry is important to me - we don't need scammers...
