There’s former Van Halen front man Sammy Hagar, NFL legend Slingin’ Sammy Baugh, and the incomparable Sammy Davis, Jr. All notable in their own right, but did they win back $586 million for defrauded consumers? We didn’t think so. That’s why we have another pick for the Sammy Hall of Fame.

FTC attorney Karen Dodge and FTC Midwest Region team members Joannie Wei, Elizabeth Scott, and Doug McKenney were just honored with Samuel J. Heyman Service to America Medals, also know as Sammies, for negotiating the historic $586 million settlement with Western Union. Thanks to the work of the team and other FTC colleagues – and in cooperation with staffers from the Department of Justicehundreds of thousands of consumers who lost money through fraud-induced money transfers will be getting refunds.

The FTC alleged that Western Union facilitated consumer fraud through its global money transfer system. According to the complaint, the company was aware that fraud was afoot, but looked the other way and profited from the wrongdoing of scammers, including some of its own agents. In addition to negotiating $586 million in consumer refunds, the team reached a groundbreaking settlement that will change how Western Union does business.

The Service to America Medals were created in 2002 by the nonpartisan, nonprofit Partnership for Public Service. Among the highest honors a federal employee can receive, the Sammies acknowledge excellence in government. Karen and the Midwest Region team were the winners in the Homeland Security and Law Enforcement category.

Congratulations to our FTC colleagues.

The staff at Federal Trade Commission has done a great service to the American public with the Western Union fraud scam recoveries. Now the investigation needs to be broadened to encompass WalMart, CVS and Walgreens' Pharmacies for selling gift cards to unsuspecting US citizens who are victims of Secret Shopper and Sweetheart scams. Most of the individuals who fall prey to these scams are senior citizens on fixed incomes.

How come Western Union in Alaska just this last month enabled repeated thousand dollar plus transfers to a fraud outfit claiming to be negotiating FTC fees for a supposed Publisher's Clearing House winning?

I had an attempted scam like this. I figured out what was going on within a few minutes of the crucial conversation with the guy acting as the "Microsoft contractor" who was going to" repair my computer remotely. " I called Western Union and stopped the transfer, which was supposed to be for $100 going to US company but instead was for at least a $1000 more than I had in my account. It was headed for Pakistan. I stopped it and gave the FBI all the information I had. I hope they are able to stop this crap. I live month to month on my pay and am able to save very little and most of that goes to upkeep on my house. Damn scavengers. Thank you for requiring Western Union to be more responsible in there business.

I've never liked Western Union, about 30 years ago I sent a $300 payment to a friend in Mexico but they never received it. WU blamed the mexican postal service and I never saw that money again: Crooks!
