The FTC is getting reports about people pretending to be from the Social Security Administration (SSA) who are trying to get your Social Security number and even your money. In one version of the scam, the caller says your Social Security number has been linked to a crime (often, he says it happened in Texas) involving drugs or sending money out of the country illegally. He then says your Social is blocked – but he might ask you for a fee to reactivate it, or to get a new number. And he will ask you to confirm your Social Security number.

In other variations, he says that somebody used your Social Security number to apply for credit cards, and you could lose your benefits. Or he might warn you that your bank account is about to be seized, that you need to withdraw your money, and that he’ll tell you how to keep it safe.

But all of these are scams. Here’s what you need to know:

  • The SSA will never (ever) call and ask for your Social Security number. It won’t ask you to pay anything. And it won’t call to threaten your benefits.
  • Your caller ID might show the SSA’s real phone number (1-800-772-1213), but that’s not the real SSA calling. Computers make it easy to show any number on caller ID. You can’t trust what you see there.
  • Never give your Social Security number to anyone who contacts you. Don’t confirm the last 4 digits. And don’t give a bank account or credit card number – ever – to anybody who contacts you asking for it.
  • Remember that anyone who tells you to wire money, pay with a gift card, or send cash is a scammer. Always. No matter who they say they are.

If you’re worried about a call from someone who claims to be from the Social Security Administration, get off the phone. Then call the real SSA at 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778). If you’ve spotted a scam, then tell the FTC at ftc.gov/complaint.

I received a call today but never answered. When I had a chance to i called back but I wanted to make sure what was going on I asked the lady who’s “name” is Lisa some questions. For example, What was her name, where she was calling from and what the current date was. As I kept asking for the date she kept repeating “excuse me why are you asking all these questions?” Over and over again. All I said was “i want to make sure I have the right date” and after that no one was on the phone anymore.

On 30 September 2019 I Received two separate prerecorded phone calls from different numbers from the state of Texas stating that I’ve committed some type of fraudulent activity with my Social Security number and therefore need to call them back. The numbers are: 833- 801–1224 Supposedly from El Paso Texas and 210–294–5771 Supposedly from San Antonio Texas. When I called them and ask questions; they easily hesitate and get verbally combative. Stay vigilant!

I just received 2 SSN scam calls first was from Ohio 1-220-663-0501 stating legal action was being taken on my SSN. The other from California 1-510-806-1284 stating my SSN was suspended for fraudulent activity. Both left VM messages. I use a part of Robocall app where I can look up numbers to see if they are on the robo list and their reputation. These both came up neutral and not on their list. Unfortunately, because I don't have the full app I can't report them. I don't want the autoblock feature at this time so I look up numbers then manually block them. It has really helped cut down Robocall on my home phone. These two calls came on my cell phone. Just wanted to add to the list of scam numbers.

I got a call on my work cell. The robocall said to press #1 to talk to the Social Security about pending charges against me and my SS#. I pressed 1 and talked to a guy who is telling me that I'm on a recorded line that is shared with the Department of Treasury and the IRS (as if they were listening in). He wanted my name and last 4 of my SS# to verify the charges. I gave him a bunch of pretend information and he said, "Ah, yes I see here that you had an abandoned car in Texas with drugs and money in it." Then he wanted my local police department so that he could call them and tell them I'm a good guy and they shouldn't arrest me. He was going to take care of everything. I probably wasted 15 minutes of his time while I actually got work done. I really wasn't listening to him.

I’ve blocked the number.

I was called on 10/9/19 at about 1116 am. I was informed by someone with an accent claiming to be the SSA, that my SS# had been blocked because of suspicious illegal international activity. I was advised to call (909) 315-4346 to clear the matter up and was further warned that the FBI and Homeland Security were involved. I did not call the number or provide anyone with any of my information.

Ya.. Someone from this number +18552118640 just called. It started out as a robo call telling me that my ssn# was about to be suspended. And to stay on the line to talk to a federal agent. Of course i stayed on, i had to hear this.. Then a woman with such a thick asian accent began to speak, i barely understood her. I asked her for her credentials, badge number and for her to provide me with proof she was who she said. She promptly hung up. I called back 5 mins later and got a busy tone.

Surely you can do something more effective than posting a description of the SS scam calls we've been getting for MONTHS and MONTHS. Why not screen purchasers of 800 numbers for a start? why not keep a database (like others independently are doing no than to you) of scam numbers and get them out of commission. DO SOMETHING!!!! Isn't that your job?

Two years ago, the FTC announced it was sharing the telephone numbers people complained about to help telecommunications carriers and other industry partners that are working on call blocking solutions.

The data the FTC releases includes the date and time a person got the unwanted call, the general subject matter (debt reduction, warranties, home security, etc.), and whether it was a robocall. Companies will be able to use this information to help identify which calls should be blocked or flagged.

To date, the Commission has brought 134 enforcement actions against companies and telemarketers for Do Not Call, abandoned call, robocall and Registry violations. To date, 121 of these FTC enforcement actions have been resolved, and in those cases the agency has recovered over $50 million in civil penalties and $71 million in redress or disgorgement. In 2017, a federal court ordered penalties totaling $280 million and strong injunctive relief against satellite television provider Dish Network for millions of calls that violated the FTC’s Telemarketing Sales Rule, the Telephone Consumer Protection Act, and state law.

I have received numerous calls today from 206-231-6157, that I suspected as a scam. Of course, I didn’t answer, and let it go to voicemail. In the first series of calls, they said that suspicious activities were found on my Social Security number, and to call them back. The callback number was the same as the incoming number. The second series of calls came from the same number. However, in this call, the voicemail said that this call was from the Social Security Administration, and to please call back. However, the callback number this time was 310-294-9788. I’ve blocked both of these numbers. I NEVER answer calls from numbers I don’t recognize. These idiots seem to never give up. Don’t fall for any of these scams.

I just received a call from the number (203)-486-9304. A woman in a noisy call center said her name was "Olivia Hogue" and she worked for the SSA. She only gave this information after I refused to give her my birthday and other information. She stated that my SSN was being used in Virginia, where I live, and "the city of New Mexico". When I informed her that New Mexico is a state, she got a little flustered. She told me that if I did not cooperate, a US Marshal would be at my address in order to serve me legal papers suspending my SSN because there are criminal activities being committed under my social. It was obvious BS and "Olivia" didn't like that I was poking holes in her story. The scary part was that she not only had a name but an "employee ID" AND A "criminal report number" that she was able to give me. Don't be fooled guys! Protect your information at all costs!!
