The FTC is getting reports about people pretending to be from the Social Security Administration (SSA) who are trying to get your Social Security number and even your money. In one version of the scam, the caller says your Social Security number has been linked to a crime (often, he says it happened in Texas) involving drugs or sending money out of the country illegally. He then says your Social is blocked – but he might ask you for a fee to reactivate it, or to get a new number. And he will ask you to confirm your Social Security number.

In other variations, he says that somebody used your Social Security number to apply for credit cards, and you could lose your benefits. Or he might warn you that your bank account is about to be seized, that you need to withdraw your money, and that he’ll tell you how to keep it safe.

But all of these are scams. Here’s what you need to know:

  • The SSA will never (ever) call and ask for your Social Security number. It won’t ask you to pay anything. And it won’t call to threaten your benefits.
  • Your caller ID might show the SSA’s real phone number (1-800-772-1213), but that’s not the real SSA calling. Computers make it easy to show any number on caller ID. You can’t trust what you see there.
  • Never give your Social Security number to anyone who contacts you. Don’t confirm the last 4 digits. And don’t give a bank account or credit card number – ever – to anybody who contacts you asking for it.
  • Remember that anyone who tells you to wire money, pay with a gift card, or send cash is a scammer. Always. No matter who they say they are.

If you’re worried about a call from someone who claims to be from the Social Security Administration, get off the phone. Then call the real SSA at 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778). If you’ve spotted a scam, then tell the FTC at ftc.gov/complaint.

Today my step dad got a call from a guy posing as a private investigator for the social security administration looking for my cousin. On my cousins paper there is no number on there that is my step dads. My question is would SSA use a private investigator? The number that was given for my cousin to call is a Phoenix local number 602 763 0227.

My mother today got a robocall saying, that her ss number has been related to some kind of fraud, ect. She hung up and told me what happened. We called back the number and it was always busy. They called her from this number 1-800-597-8254. Is a fake number. I've searched the web and this number does not belong to any federal agency. We were worried, but I thanks God she didn't gave any info. This is so alarming.

I just reported my recent activity to the local police. A woman called from 763-566-1058. I live in Minnesota. That number is a local number. The police did a reverse on the number to get the address/name and it came back as a local company called G.S.A. In Brooklyn Center MN. The woman that called knew ALOT about my case! I had applied for SSDI about 6 weeks prior to her calling me today. She knew my DOCTOR’S names, my condition, my surgeries in detail even! It’s like she somehow got into my account online! The thing is, I haven’t been able to log into “my social security” section online! They keep freezing my account due to lack of information. They say my info doesn’t match theirs. I’m just freaking out! My medical records??!!! I will be physically going down to the SSA office in person! This person wanted my work information and also when I asked them for my address they didn’t know, or evaded the question! She said to come down to the office for further information but when I asked (I already knew) her the address of the SSA office, she hung up!

Today I received a call from 1-855-126-9173 It was a recording stating; “This is officer Frank from the Social Security office there has been some fraudulent activity on your Social Security account if you wish to know about this activity just push one” I hung up. I do not give out my SSN to hardly anyone not even my Dr office they do not need it to file my insurance they have my insurance number, & I don’t know the person behind the desk or who has excess to their files. I am assuming it is better now that everything is digital. However every day I hear of something or someone getting hacked & everyone’s identity is at risk again. So my policy is better safe than sorry don’t give it to anyone and too bad if they get upset at you.
