The FTC is getting reports about people pretending to be from the Social Security Administration (SSA) who are trying to get your Social Security number and even your money. In one version of the scam, the caller says your Social Security number has been linked to a crime (often, he says it happened in Texas) involving drugs or sending money out of the country illegally. He then says your Social is blocked – but he might ask you for a fee to reactivate it, or to get a new number. And he will ask you to confirm your Social Security number.

In other variations, he says that somebody used your Social Security number to apply for credit cards, and you could lose your benefits. Or he might warn you that your bank account is about to be seized, that you need to withdraw your money, and that he’ll tell you how to keep it safe.

But all of these are scams. Here’s what you need to know:

  • The SSA will never (ever) call and ask for your Social Security number. It won’t ask you to pay anything. And it won’t call to threaten your benefits.
  • Your caller ID might show the SSA’s real phone number (1-800-772-1213), but that’s not the real SSA calling. Computers make it easy to show any number on caller ID. You can’t trust what you see there.
  • Never give your Social Security number to anyone who contacts you. Don’t confirm the last 4 digits. And don’t give a bank account or credit card number – ever – to anybody who contacts you asking for it.
  • Remember that anyone who tells you to wire money, pay with a gift card, or send cash is a scammer. Always. No matter who they say they are.

If you’re worried about a call from someone who claims to be from the Social Security Administration, get off the phone. Then call the real SSA at 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778). If you’ve spotted a scam, then tell the FTC at ftc.gov/complaint.

Rec'd a call just moments ago from 830-363-3545, a Texas number. A recording told me that my ss# was being used in southern Texas. I was to press 1 to get additional information and help for this problem. Hung up. I hang up on average 8 calls a day between work and personal numbers. I'll be so happy when they find a way to stop all these calls. Yes, I am registered on the "Do Not Call" list, it doesn't do any good. SOMEBODY GET THIS FIXED!

Recently I get many phone calls from numbers in San Antonio Tx. I answered once and it was a recording followed by a live agent claiming to be from social security and that my number had problems including a law suit. I hung up but I'm concerned.

I received a voice message stating that I need to call back (201) 528-1157 because my SSN was associated to a fradulent matter and I would need to call back before legal action was taken against me. When I called, the person was very aggressive trying to get my information so I asked -- "whom am I speaking with?" He stated that he was Officer Badge NO. 50317. I hung up because it just didn't seem right. I'm assuming that the SSA would send a letter rather than leave a voice message on my phone. Either way this is very scary and awareness should be spread. I'm glad I found this information.

I get a fake call at least once a month telling me that it's urgent that I return their call, telling me that it has something to do with my Social Security benefits and even though I blocked that number(it starts with the prefix as 817!), they're still able to leave a message!

I received a call from someone saying my social is suspended due to illegal activity (866-912-2480). I recognized it as a scam immediately. I called the # back to tell the real owner of the number, they have been spoofed. I called the number listed above to report it, that # gave me a different number to report it to (800-269-0271), then I went on a long recorded goose chase to try to report it, to no avail, then hung up to answer the next spoof/spam phone call I was receiving. Ugh!

800-210-6307 is the newest number, there are so many and when I finally had time to "press one" they said that it was Social Security Administration. They say that I need to speak to them because my social security number has been blocked. I asked them to verify it and they told me not to call the number. They called me. I block the number every time.

They’ve called me (a Virginia number) from 845-367-7054 which is a Nanuet, NY number multiple times since May saying the authorities are coming. Any names given have all been famous people (Robin Williams for example) and when I don’t give them things they want they resort to calling me nasty names. I’ve reported it multiple times and it never seems to do anything
