The FTC is getting reports about people pretending to be from the Social Security Administration (SSA) who are trying to get your Social Security number and even your money. In one version of the scam, the caller says your Social Security number has been linked to a crime (often, he says it happened in Texas) involving drugs or sending money out of the country illegally. He then says your Social is blocked – but he might ask you for a fee to reactivate it, or to get a new number. And he will ask you to confirm your Social Security number.

In other variations, he says that somebody used your Social Security number to apply for credit cards, and you could lose your benefits. Or he might warn you that your bank account is about to be seized, that you need to withdraw your money, and that he’ll tell you how to keep it safe.

But all of these are scams. Here’s what you need to know:

  • The SSA will never (ever) call and ask for your Social Security number. It won’t ask you to pay anything. And it won’t call to threaten your benefits.
  • Your caller ID might show the SSA’s real phone number (1-800-772-1213), but that’s not the real SSA calling. Computers make it easy to show any number on caller ID. You can’t trust what you see there.
  • Never give your Social Security number to anyone who contacts you. Don’t confirm the last 4 digits. And don’t give a bank account or credit card number – ever – to anybody who contacts you asking for it.
  • Remember that anyone who tells you to wire money, pay with a gift card, or send cash is a scammer. Always. No matter who they say they are.

If you’re worried about a call from someone who claims to be from the Social Security Administration, get off the phone. Then call the real SSA at 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778). If you’ve spotted a scam, then tell the FTC at ftc.gov/complaint.

I just received a call on my cell from 443-234-0722 saying it was SS and that were criminal charges filed against my SS and that I am to call the number listed. Is this a scam? Does the SS ever call to notify something like this?

I receive numerous calls from various phone numbers ie 18002694774 with a recorded voice threatening all types of fraud ie social security has been stopped. This is an ongoing problem and every time a number is blocked another number is used. I am aware that social security does not call and do this. However I do wish there was an end to these bogus calls!

I just received a call purportedly from SS. It was a robot call. The number they used is 18443918880. I called it back & told the man who answered “Social Security Administration” that I didn’t know how he got my number but he better not ever call me again. That he was a scammer & I was reporting him immediately. He hung up. I called 2 more times & they hung up before I could give them a piece of my mind.

I had 9-Nine phone calls, from 10:00am to 2:15pm, stating they we're from the SSN Dept concerning my SSN being blocked due to criminal investigation and to return the call immediately. Sooo, for grins & chuckles and ready to mess up their minds, I called the 888-217-9288 number. The first thing I heard was the loud call center background noise, then a voice of possible Indian Dialect said "Social Security Dept how can I help you?" I asked is this the Real SSN Office? A short pause of silence, then a hang up. Guess it threw him off his Script....

Scam is using this number 800-033-7493. Recorded message from this number. Claiming the call is from the Social Security Administration indicating my SS was blocked due to fraudulent activity. Instructed me to call the number to validate my last four digits of my social security number. Threatened that if I don't respond within 24 hours SSA will process an arrest warrant and I would be arrested. I cut the call and filed a complaint.

I just received a voicemail from a number in Richmond, California (510) area code, saying that my security number had been used in fraudulent activity and to call back before they start legal proceedings. I assume this was a scam and I will not call them back but I have never received a call from this number stating anything nefarious with my SSN. I'm glad there is a place like this to ask these things as it can be very intimidating. Good to know that the SSA will not call about this. Just Stay safe!!

I have reported this before and it stop for a little bit and started back up again. The number they are using this time is a Local number and saying the same things. Sounds like a record saying we made attempts to reach you if you don’t respond in 48 hours you loose your benefits. I have never received benefit for Social Security not even Disability. This is what recording says here is the Number this time 1-965-748-5975. I hope your office can resolve this and I greatly appreciate it. You and yours have a Blessed Christmas

I have received 1 call a day every day this week so far from scammers claiming to be from SS. Just today the # was (800) 800-4788, which doesn't even look like it should be a real #. Just comes up as United States on the CID. Another # came up as (844) 368-8740, also under United States. I did not answer and both left me the same VM; a robot threatening me with a lawsuit if I did not press 1 for more information. Never was my name mentioned. If you get these calls just let it ring then erase the VM.

I received appx. 10 calls from different 855 numbers today. I reluctantly answered the last one which was a woman's voice recorded stating that my SSN was suspended due to suspicious activity. Then a man with a heavy accent answered and after repeating the same message began asking for personal info. I was suspicious but before giving any info I asked him what information he had about me considering he is reporting that my identity was compromised. He sounded angry and told me he could not give it to me. I trusted my indicts and told him I would go to my local Social Security Administration to confirm the allegations. He then told me I would have to come to the Maryland office to receive any information. I told him I live in Texas and I will not go there and he then stated that I have a warrant for my arrest and I have to go to Maryland to have it lifted. I finally told him that I will go to my local authorities and SSA to resolve any issues and hung up. He was rude and sounded angry. I pray these people will be apprehended so they cannot hurt anyone else. Thank you.
