The FTC is getting reports about people pretending to be from the Social Security Administration (SSA) who are trying to get your Social Security number and even your money. In one version of the scam, the caller says your Social Security number has been linked to a crime (often, he says it happened in Texas) involving drugs or sending money out of the country illegally. He then says your Social is blocked – but he might ask you for a fee to reactivate it, or to get a new number. And he will ask you to confirm your Social Security number.

In other variations, he says that somebody used your Social Security number to apply for credit cards, and you could lose your benefits. Or he might warn you that your bank account is about to be seized, that you need to withdraw your money, and that he’ll tell you how to keep it safe.

But all of these are scams. Here’s what you need to know:

  • The SSA will never (ever) call and ask for your Social Security number. It won’t ask you to pay anything. And it won’t call to threaten your benefits.
  • Your caller ID might show the SSA’s real phone number (1-800-772-1213), but that’s not the real SSA calling. Computers make it easy to show any number on caller ID. You can’t trust what you see there.
  • Never give your Social Security number to anyone who contacts you. Don’t confirm the last 4 digits. And don’t give a bank account or credit card number – ever – to anybody who contacts you asking for it.
  • Remember that anyone who tells you to wire money, pay with a gift card, or send cash is a scammer. Always. No matter who they say they are.

If you’re worried about a call from someone who claims to be from the Social Security Administration, get off the phone. Then call the real SSA at 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778). If you’ve spotted a scam, then tell the FTC at ftc.gov/complaint.

I received a call on my cell asking for my husband. I'm at work so he's not available. They said that they were calling from the OIG office at SSA and that his SSN has been compromised and he needs to go to an SSA office ASAP. They called from 866-694-5605 and when I asked what number he should call they gave me 915-330-6200. When I called it, it went straight to a generic VM box. I assume this is a scam but not sure. Would the SSA call to tell you that your SSN has been compromised?

To whom it may concern: I was contacted by a toll free number 800 436 2127. The call went into voicemail. It stated that there was suspicious activity to my social security and my payments have been suspended. I googled and saw that the social security will never contact a recipient by phone and that this was probably a scam to get my social security number. I just wanted to reach out and let it be known how common these scams are. I hope this comment helps someone who may also receive a call in the future

Just got my 5th call in as many weeks asking me call the social security number 833-938-1905. The recorded person this time actually seemed to speak English as their first language in that their grammar was correct. This is a first, most of the calls were obviously sent by someone that didn't speak English as a first language. Blocked the call.

I received a scam call related to SSA as following : “There is an enforcement action executed by the US Authorities stating that your SSN is going to be blocked intending your serious attention ignoring this will be an intentional second attempt to avoid initial appearance before a magistrate judge or a grand jury for a federal criminal offense this is the final attempt to reach you to speak to an agent call back on our direct line number 512-982-6156 I repeat 512-982-6156 thank you…” I’m glad I never responded to this kind of calls simply because the caller ID in my phone shows “Scam Likely”. Wow this information is a relief!! I got a voicemail saying to call back before they start a legal action. Of course I called back. The lady said the call is from Homeland security regarding SSN and said my ssn was pinged for illegal activity. I was asked if I was ever in TX or ever given my SSN to anyone. Then asked my name and to spell it to get me more information regarding my case. Only when I was asked the last four digit of my SSN number, I refused to given any personal information and will go to nearby SSN office to know more. The caller location is shown as Prosper, TX which when checked online, there is no SNN office with that city address. (which was a great relief).

18 of the last 20 calls I have received on my cellphone in the last two weeks are from this scam operation pretending that my social security account has been "suspended". I have to pay international rates for these calls, as I am in France. How can I block these scammers so I can stop paying $100s of dollars per month to receive these fraudulent calls.

I have been bombarded by these calls since the end of December. I think it is all coming from the same company by the automated messages. When leaving a voicemail, it is always the same script from different numbers lasting exactly 58 second. The amount of calls has increase since the beginning of the year, probably to play on peoples fears of delayed tax returns. Here are the numbers I have gotten it from: 8003269950 8006230986 8006430205 8004422693 8005594722 8005140125 8009971312 8007942228 8006311234 8001752467 8008763176

My 87 year old mother received a phone call similar to this earlier today. They told her there was some type of illegal activity on her Chase account or her SS # (I'm not sure of all the details), and told her to go to Lowe's, and they would stay on the phone with her and tell her where to go when she got to Lowe's! Fortunately I had come into the house while she was on the phone and got the details from her and told her this sounded very suspicious. I took her by her local Chase branch and they assured her that this was indeed a scam call . Hopefully she has now learned not to give any type of information to someone who calls her and asks for some type of personal info such as SS #, bank account, credit card, etc.

Last Year, I received one call/voicemail saying that since my SS# had suspended due to suspicious activity and I had to call them before they put a warrant out for my arrest and took all of my assets as well. Fast forward to 2 weeks ago, they have been calling me between 4-10 times a day now. It's so frustrating and one time, a couple days ago I actually thought it was the actual SSA trying to contact me from 1-800-772-0621 but then looked up this information and have been reading the info and comments and really glad I forward it to voicemail. PLEASE pass along to friends and family that this is a major scam!!!!
