The FTC is getting reports about people pretending to be from the Social Security Administration (SSA) who are trying to get your Social Security number and even your money. In one version of the scam, the caller says your Social Security number has been linked to a crime (often, he says it happened in Texas) involving drugs or sending money out of the country illegally. He then says your Social is blocked – but he might ask you for a fee to reactivate it, or to get a new number. And he will ask you to confirm your Social Security number.

In other variations, he says that somebody used your Social Security number to apply for credit cards, and you could lose your benefits. Or he might warn you that your bank account is about to be seized, that you need to withdraw your money, and that he’ll tell you how to keep it safe.

But all of these are scams. Here’s what you need to know:

  • The SSA will never (ever) call and ask for your Social Security number. It won’t ask you to pay anything. And it won’t call to threaten your benefits.
  • Your caller ID might show the SSA’s real phone number (1-800-772-1213), but that’s not the real SSA calling. Computers make it easy to show any number on caller ID. You can’t trust what you see there.
  • Never give your Social Security number to anyone who contacts you. Don’t confirm the last 4 digits. And don’t give a bank account or credit card number – ever – to anybody who contacts you asking for it.
  • Remember that anyone who tells you to wire money, pay with a gift card, or send cash is a scammer. Always. No matter who they say they are.

If you’re worried about a call from someone who claims to be from the Social Security Administration, get off the phone. Then call the real SSA at 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778). If you’ve spotted a scam, then tell the FTC at ftc.gov/complaint.

17sept2019: Just rec'd the one about my SSN having been used for "fraudulent activity in the southern part of Texas." The call originated from phone number 409-443-0041 (though that info is unlikely to be helpful), and my screen indicated that was Texas as well.

I just got that same call yesterday. No suspension threat, just the Texas border shpeil asking me to press 1 to speak to an agent. I slowly pressed one and listened, without speaking. Large boiler room sounds in the background, then they hung up. Pretty sure at the time it was a scam. Get them every year from "irs" fakers. SSA is new for me. Thanks for the validation. I feel much better now. I didn't sleep so well last night.

So today 9/19/19 at 10:30, not 9:19 LOL I get my 3rd or 4th SSA fraud call. It's a robo call, telling me if I don't respond they will take it that I am guilty of fraud. It tells me to push 1 on my phone. WHATEVER! The number this one came from was 1-217-290-4547 - United States. Really? HERE'S A CLUE: DO NOT ANSWER A CALL THAT DOESN'T HAVE A NAME TO IT. That would be a phone number you put in your phone that has a name. Otherwise, let them leave a message. If it's your friend tell them you couldn't answer the phone. Do NOT ANSWER.

And I need to call that number back immediately. Failing to do so will lead to my assets be blah blah. Ha, of 'coz I won't call back. But really hates this type of scam! So I've been contacted twice in the past few hours by two separate numbers, both from New York (718-636-9250 and 718-023-6097) and I do not have any ties to New York. I was in class the first time, but I picked up the second call. They basically told me that my SSN was suspended and that there was a warrant out for my arrest before I hung up. As an 18-year-old who has never even skipped a class, let alone commit a crime, it really scared me until I actually stopped to think about it. It's horrible how people try to take advantage of those who don't know any better, and something needs to be done about it.

I have not only gotten calls I’ve gotten emails. My husband and I both. Email says my SS is about to be deactivated because I committed a crime. Which that’s not even a real thing! Who would believe that? Other emails saying they’ll help me get my benifuts back. The callers always hang up on me. They call from U.S. 412-5160845 or some other semi local number under the United States caption and it’s like at least forty times a day. I block they call from another. I can’t take it.

I received almost the exact call this afternoon, the person called back and left an automated voicemail stating that I was in danger of being arrested for drug trafficking and identity theft in Texas. When I questioned the guy he got very rude and said I could hang up but within 24 hours the local police would show up and arrest me. I wasn’t supposed to tell anyone about this and when my husband got on the call, they hung up.

Hello all. I am in MN. Today I got a voicemail from 1-855-673-6725 stating my social security has been used to commit fraudulent activity and I needed to contact this number before they take legal action. I called the number back, automated message told me to press "0", which I did. A lady with an accent answered. First thing I asked was "Where are you calling from and why?" She said she was from the SSA in Maryland and that someone is conducting fraud with my social in Texas. (Mind you, I did not give her my name yet). She then asked for my name so I gave her my first name. Then she asked for my social in which I responded "Aren't you calling from SSA? YOU should have my social" Then she said you can give me your last 4, which I (stupidly) did. Then she proceeded to ask for my zip code, DOB and address...I hung up. I'm HOPING to God that they can't do anything with just my first name and last 4 digits...I'm scared to death right now but praying that I'll be okay...
