Earlier this month, we told you about a growing scam: people pretend to be from the Social Security Administration (SSA) and try to get your Social Security number or your money. That scam is now growing exponentially. To compare: in 2017, we heard from 3,200 people about SSA imposter scams, and those people reported losing nearly $210,000. So far THIS year: more than 35,000 people have reported the scam, and they tell us they’ve lost $10 million.

Here’s what one of those scam calls sound like:

Scammers are saying your Social Security number (SSN) has been suspended because of suspicious activity, or because it’s been involved in a crime. Sometimes, the scammer wants you to confirm your SSN to reactivate it. Sometimes, he’ll say your bank account is about to be seized – but he’ll tell you what to do to keep it safe. (Often, that involves putting your money on gift cards and giving him the codes – which, of course, means that your money is gone.)

Oh, and your caller ID often shows the real SSA phone number (1-800-772-1213) when these scammers call – but they’re faking that number. It’s not the real SSA calling.

Here's what to know:

  • Your Social Security number is not about to be suspended. You don’t have to verify your number to anyone who calls out of the blue. And your bank accounts are not about to be seized.
  • SSA will never call to threaten your benefits or tell you to wire money, send cash, or put money on gift cards. Anyone who tells you to do those things is a scammer. Every time.
  • The real SSA number is 1-800-772-1213, but scammers are putting that number in the caller ID. If you’re worried about what the caller says, hang up and call 1-800-772-1213 to speak to the real SSA. Even if the wait time is long, confirm with the real SSA before responding to one of these calls.
  • Never give any part of your Social Security number to anyone who contacts you. Or your bank account or credit card number.

If you get one of these calls, tell the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.

When people say your SSN has been used in a crime, do they tell you the SSN or use your name? The call I got today said that my SSN had been suspended, but they never mentioned the actual number or who they thought I was. And the call started with "Dear Citizen". So they wouldn't have had to know anything at all before calling, unless I responded and told them my information. Maybe the crime version is different, though.

Its impossible or nearly impossible to catch these people...most are overseas and laws in their countries protect them. We have to be vigilant and never send money. Don't count on other people to protect you...the best thing you can do is protect yourself.

It’s always fake because no legitimate agency uses the phone for communication regarding monetary issues. I’ve trained myself on that young so that I’ll remember it (hopefully) when I’m older and more vulnerable. I’ve also broken myself of the habit of phone politeness I learned as a child. Now I just hang up on everyone from scammers to wrong numbers. It might be rude but scammers record bits and use it as “proof” you authorized something.

Agree with KBE, it has been on the news. DON'T give out information over the phone. SS department let's people know they will Never call and ask for your number or money, you cannot depend on others to fix these issues for you. It stinks, but these calls are from everywhere, I think mostly from other countries. I returned a call because I knew it was a scam call told them I was going to report their number, they responded with some very foul language and I hung up on me. They use so many numbers it is hard to keep track of them. Sorry for all the people that lost their money but I hope it a lesson to everyone that get these calls just hang up.

Ironic that you post to a government site. My experience is that people in government are far more responsive than the telephone companies or insurance companies or banks or credit bureaus and so forth. If you call or write your congressman demand instead that he or she works to put teeth back into agencies such as the Consumer Financial Protection Agency.

Said they were calling from the "Legal Department of Social Security Administration"... said my SS# has been suspended & they filed a case under my name. Before the matter goes to Federal Claim Court house for me to get arrested, to press '1' " This all went to my voice mail. NOT COOL MAN!!

I got 7 of these calls today! It’s become utterly ridiculous. I never pick up. I didn’t see anyone else mention it here, but if they ask you a question, never answer ‘yes’ or ‘no’. I think I read that the scammers can construct a fake conversation where you appear to be agreeing to something.

Let's add another number to the list: 832-564-3547. LOL I called back because I felt like having fun. I told the 'officer' that I needed his # so that my attorney could call him directly and discuss the matter. He said to call the number I just called. I said, 'No, I needed his number." He repeated that I needed to call the number I just called. But I insisted I needed his number and guess what.... He hung up on me. LOL LOL LOL.
